Black Box Corporation. 6/15/2005 #24435 Chassis available with or without SNMP embedded. Choose a chassis and add only the media converters you need. Built-in cooling fans on System II chassis. LinkLoss and/or FiberAlert diagnostics on converter modules. Bandwidth Manager enables you to control bandwidth per each port. Copper-to-fiber, fiber- to-fiber, and single- strand fiber modules available. Layer 2 converters increase network efficiency. W ish you could effectively manage the media converters in your rapidly growing network without ever having to leave your computer room? The High-Density Media Converter System or the High-Density Media Converter System II with Embedded SNMP gives you the ability to do just that. Use either chassis to monitor and manage the media converters in your network right from your desk. Eliminate guesswork, avoid downtime, and isolate problems without having to visit your wiring centers. They’re particularly useful in mission-critical enterprise and service-provider applications. Choose the size of chassis to fit your application. We offer small tabletop configurations as well as high-port density rackmounted models. Because the systems are modular, you can add whatever equipment works best for you. SNMP management, which is embedded in the System II chassis and available as a modular add-on to the original chassis, helps you diagnose network problems by monitoring both copper and fiber link status as well as the chassis’ temperature and voltage levels. Key Features HIGH-DENSITY MEDIA CONVERTER SYSTEMS SNMP traps can alert you to potential network failures so you incur less downtime and spend less time troubleshooting. You can assign a name to each of the various ports and if a link failure occurs, you’ll be notified with the port’s name. With the High-Density Media Converter System II with Embedded SNMP, you receive a CD-ROM that contains iView management software. This software enables you to configure the chassis and its modules in minutes and provides you with a cross-platform application for managing intelligent networking devices from virtually any 32-bit Windows system. It also includes MIBs for SNMP. Compatible with Windows ® 95/98, Windows 2000, Windows NT ® 4, and HTML, the user-friendly, comprehensive iView program uses a clear graphical user interface (GUI). It even shows an on-screen representation of the actual device control panels and gives you detailed information about the conversion ports. You can also use the included MIBs with any standard SNMP program, such as HP ® OpenView ®. This enables you to view SNMP’s in-depth technical data in iView’s easy-to-use interface. You can even display statistics as charts. The Chassis High-Density Media Converter System There are two basic chassis types to choose from in this family: the 2-slot model and the 18-slot model. The 2-slot table-top chassis (LMC5000A) is ideal for fiber-to-the desktop applications or remote locations. You can install one or two media converter modules for an unmanaged LMC5000A system. The 18-slot rackmount chassis (LMC5001A) provides a central hub for your media converters. Use it for installation in a central location, such as a computer room. And with 18 slots, you’re guaranteed maximum flexibility. At 3U high, the 18-slot chassis is rackmountable and is available with an AC power supply. You can also add a redundant power supply (LMC5004AC or LMC5005DC). High-Density Media Converter System II with Embedded SNMP This chassis features an SNMP agent embedded in its backplane,

1 18-Slot Rackmount Chassis Installation Guide LMC5001A — LMC5002A 18-Slot Rackmount Chassis™ is a modular, SNMP-manageable media converter chassis designed to be used in conjunction with Black Box SNMP Manageable Modules (part numbers LMC5006C through LMC5035C). 18-Slot Rackmount Chassis come in both AC (LMC5001A) and DC (LMC5002A) versions and feature one slot for installing a Master Module (LMC5003A) and 18 slots for installing any combination of SNMP Manageable Modules. 18-Slot Rackmount Chassis ships with one 100-240 ±10% VAC (LMC5004AC) or -48 VDC (LMC5005DC) Power Supply Module and features an additional slot for a second, redundant power supply. 18-Slot Rackmount Chassis can be installed either as a managed or unmanaged device. A managed 18-Slot Rackmount Chassis uses a Master Module. Installing 18-Slot Rackmount Chassis Before installing any SNMP Manageable Modules and/or Master Modules into the 18-Slot Rackmount Chassis, you should first install the 18-Slot Rackmount Chassis itself. Rackmount Installation Instructions To install a rackmountable 18-Slot Rackmount Chassis, you will typically need four #10 screws and four clip nuts. (Hardware may vary depending on rack type.) The rest of the hardware is supplied with the unit. First, mount the RETMA mounting ears to the chassis with the supplied hardware. Then locate a suitable location in the rack for installation and secure the clip-nuts onto the mounting rails. Use the screws to attach the chassis to the rack. Finally, attach the cables between the chassis and each device that will be interconnected, then plug the chassis into a reliable, filtered power source. When installing the chassis in an equipment rack, be sure to observe the following precautions to prevent electrical or mechanical damage: Stay within the chassis power rating to prevent overload of supply circuits or damage to overcurrent protection and supply wiring. Maintain reliable earth ground, especially when connecting to power strip instead of directly to branch circuit. Protect your chassis from exposure to sunlight and electrical or magnetic fields. Ensure that the equipment rack remains stable, even with the addition of the chassis and its associated cabling. Tabletop Installation Instructions Be sure that the unit is placed on a suitable flat surface, leaving some space at the back of the unit to accommodate cooling. Attach the cables between the chassis and each device that will be interconnected, then plug the chassis into a reliable, filtered power source. Configuring and Installing Modules Refer to the installation guide shipped with the SNMP Manageable Module for configuration information. Master Modules come ready to install. The process for installing these modules is simple. Remove the blank bracket covering the slot where you’ll be installing the module. Slide the module into the chassis, via the cardguides, until the module is seated securely in the connector. Secure the module to the chassis by tightening the captive screws. NOTE: The first slot, located closest to the left-side of the chassis (front view), is the management slot for the Master Module. Install a Master Module only if using SNMP-management capabilities. Otherwise, this slot must remain empty for the chassis and the SNMP Manageable Modules to function properly. The 18 slots to the right of the management slot are for SNMP Manageable Modules. Do not install a SNMP Manageable Module in the management slot or vice versa. SNMP Manageable Modules may, however, be installed in any order within the 18 slots.
