Definitive Technology Invents the Future! D efinitive Technology’s legendary commitment to sonic superiority and unequalled value has made us the leader in high performance loudspeakers. Our latest groundbreaking new products go beyond anything which has come before with dramatic breakthroughs in sound quality, build quality and styling. Welcome to the future! New Flagship BP7000SC & BP7001SC Bipolar SuperTowers™ The new 7000 Series Bipolar SuperTowers™combine the benefits of our revolutionary bipolar technology with built-in side-firing SuperCube® technology powered subwoofers. This unique combination of technologies is exclusive to Definitive and patented (US Patent #5,887,068). These astounding new speakers continue the tradition of the highly acclaimed BP3000TL and BP2000TL with dramatically improved performance, elegant refinements to Definitive’s signature styling and an aesthetically appealing reduction in overall size. Both new models are designed for use in two-channel systems of the highest quality as well as state-of-the-art home theaters when used in combination with Definitive’s C/L/R 3000 center channel and bipolar surround speakers. Top-of-the-Line BP7000SC Bipolar SuperTowers™ Each BP7000SC combines a new built-in SuperCube Reference subwoofer (driven by an 1800-watt class D amplifier, two pressure-driven 14" infrasonic radiators) and bipolar dual D’Appolito front and rear mounted driver arrays each consisting of two high-definition cast-basket 6.5" Definitive bass/midrange drivers surrounding a 1" annealed pure aluminum dome Definitive tweeter (four 6.5" bass/midranges and two dome tweeters total). Newly designed Linkwitz-Riley crossover networks do a superlative job of seamlessly blending the drivers for totally homoge- neous sonic output as if radiating from a full-range pulsating sphere. The low-frequency performance sets new standards for speakers priced under $50,000 a pair, with extension below 11 Hz, extremely low distortion and fantastic transient response. A pair of BP7000SCs goes lower than and has the bass impact and output level capability of seven SuperCube I subwoofers combined. Plus the dual built-in powered subwoofers achieve dramatically better blending, integration and timbral accuracy than could ever be achieved with separate subs. This extraordinary speaker sets a new reference standard for ultra- dynamic high-accuracy loudspeakers and achieves equally superb performance with both music and movies. They will reproduce a silky smooth, incredibly detailed wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling sonic image with superb dimensionality at lifelike volume levels (and beyond) with a sense of ease which is truly remarkable. As with all Definitive’s bipolar speakers, they have an almost magical ability to recreate a stunningly realistic holographic soundfield. The elegant styling features beautiful sculptural refinements to Definitive’s signature look with a choice of our classic piano-gloss black or new piano-gloss golden cherry finish. Dimensions: 52.5"H x 8.9"W x 16.6"D. Freq. Response: 11 Hz – 30kHz. Rec. Assoc. Amp.: 20 – 1000 watts/channel. BP7001SC Bipolar SuperTowers™ The engineering team responsible for the new BP7001SC is especially proud of their work on this second landmark member of the 7000 Series. It was designed to make many of the performance break- throughs spearheaded by the BP7000SC available to a broad range of enthusiasts. In fact, considering its smaller size and lower price, the new BP7001SC is in some ways almost as impressive as the BP7000SC. It combines a bipolar array similar to that used in the BP7000SC with what is basically a built-in SuperCubeI (10" SuperCube technology sub driver, two 10" infrasonic radiators and a 1500-watt class D amp) in each stylishly sleek cabinet. The sonic performance of the BP7001SC is actually dramatically superior to the former flagship system, the BP3000TL, which makes it a tremendous value as well as an outstanding performer. It also features the new signature styling as well as a choice of piano-gloss black or piano-gloss golden cherry finish. Dimensions: 48"H x 8.4" W x 15"D. Freq. Response: 13 Hz – 30 kHz. Rec. Assoc. Amp.: 20 – 600 watts/channel. A mind-boggling sonic achievement “ ” — Gary Merson, HDTV Insider

with the company’s C/L/R 3000 center speaker — another full-range design with a built-in powered sub and a couple of beefy BPVX surrounds. Definitive Tech claims the system can han- dle the dynamic needs of both the movie soundtracks and multichannel music on DVD Audio and Super Audio CD. And with each speaker in the system using the same 6 1/2-inch woofer and 1-inch tweeter, you can count on seamless sound all around. There are plenty of top shelf speaker systems avail- able, so you’re probably wondering what makes this one different. First off, both the BP7001SC tower and BPVX surround are bipolar designs (the C/L/R 3000 center speaker is a conven- tional direct-radiating, or monopolar design). A bipo- lar speaker uses matched sets of drivers to radiate equal sound from the front and rear, and because all of the drivers operate in phase with one another, it can produce a nearly 360° sound field. The second thing, of course, is the built-in powered sub in each tower speaker (each BP7001SC must be plugged into an AC outlet for the sub to operate and the same goes for the C/L/R 3000). The BP7001SC sub’s 10-inch driver is powered by a 1,500-watt Class D ampli- fier and it has two 10-inch passive radiators, so using a pair of BP7001SC towers effectively gives you stereo subwoofers. In some rooms this will boost deep-bass output. The BP7001SC has a line-level input that lets you separately feed the subwoofer/LFE (low-frequency effects, the “.1” in “5.1”) output from your surround processor or receiver to the tower’s built-in subwoofer. There’s also a volume control to adjust the sub’s output. The C/L/R 3000 has a line-level input as well, but it’s designed to connect to the full-range center-channel pre- amp output found on some receivers and is not intended for subwoofer/LFE signals. The system Definitive Technology sent me came with wood end caps finished in its new golden cherry piano gloss finish. They all have the same black knit wrap- around sleeves as most of the company’s previous speakers, but to me the lighter finish on the end caps is an aesthetic leap forward from the previous monolithic black look. Another pleasing touch is the beveled edge that runs the length of the tower speaker’s front baffle and is echoed in its end caps. Weighing in at 61 pounds, the C/L/R 3000 is one hefty center speaker — as you’d expect from a model packing a powered subwoofer. It’s also pretty large, so don’t expect to set it on top of one of those slim new TVs, most of which provide only a few inches of surface depth on top. For horizontal placement, a set of adjustable feet lets you angle the speaker up or down. With a specified low-end limit of 31 Hz, Definitive Tech’s BPVX is equipped to deliver more bass than your average surround speaker. Standing a tall 22 inches, it has a semi-triangular design with matched sets of drivers on both of its angled sides. The supplied mounting hardware lets you attach the speaker’s back panel to a wall. There’s been a lot of debate about which type of speak- er works best for surround sound. But because they radi- ate sound from both front and rear, bipolar surrounds like the BPVX split the difference between a dipole’s diffuse presentation — a desirable trait for movie soundtracks — and a monopole’s directionality, which tends to work better for music. I used the Def Tech system to christen Sound & Vision’s new A/V testing facility — a set of soundproofed, acoustically treated rooms tucked away in the heart of midtown Manhattan. Owing to the large size of the BP7001SC towers, I set up the system in the more volumi- nous Room 1, a 20 x 14-foot space with an 8 1/2-foot ceil- ing. The C/L/R 3000 center went on a shelf of a large TV stand, under the screen, and was angled up toward the seating position. I put the BPVX surrounds on a set of 38-inch-high stands 2 feet behind the couch. I set these up H I G H P O I N T S Great Sound. Impressive low-end extension. Seamless blend between front and surround speakers. Full-range center speaker. L O W P O I N T Sub level can be tricky to optimize. test report BY AL GRIFFIN Definitive Technology BP7001SC Home Theater Speaker System ith the popularity of flat-panel TVs exploding and companies straining to cre- ate speakers that will mate with the unob- trusive sets, it seems like the era of hulking home theater gear — towering speakers, massive subwoofers, video projectors hov- ering above your head like an F-15 — is over. I’ll admit that part of me likes the interior design-friendly stuff, but another part frets about trying to coax too much from too little. I’m reminded of that every Saturday night when I hear the screech of my neighbor’s “home theater in a box.” Man, I wish that guy would go out to the movies! Inexpensive subwoofer/satellite systems can give you a taste of surround sound, but compromise-free perfor- mance requires serious speakers. And in my experience, that usually means floor-standing towers at least for the front left/right channels. Definitive Technology’s BP7001SC SuperTower speaker, a slightly smaller version of its flagship BP7000SC, is equipped to deliver full-range performance thanks to its built-in powered subwoofer. In the system I tested, a pair of BP7001SC towers is mated “Awesome ... frighteningly real ... Definitive’s BP7001SC based system demands your attention.” W SOUND & VISION

If you meet Sandy Gross, president of Definitive Technology, you will discover three things; first, he is every inch an audiophile (as passionate about sound quality as any TAS reader might be); sec- ond, he believes in building speakers whose price/performance ratios are exceptionally good (more than a good business strategy, this approach makes quality sound accessible for more listeners);and third,he never forgets that music reproduction in the home is supposed to be fun (that’s right—exuberant, childlike fun). All three of these traits influenced the design of Definitive’s new BP7001SC—an ambitious speaker that promises top tier performance at an affordable price, plus that elusive “fun fac- tor” that entices you to enjoy whatever music you want, whenever you want. Enthusiasts biased in favor of small, esoteric manufacturers may find it hard to embrace a high-end speaker from a compara- tively large and successful company like Definitive Technology, but the truth is that some large companies have research and devel- opment resources small firms simply can’t afford. One example would be Definitive’s new multi-million-dollar Definitive Technology Advanced Research Facility (patterned after the NRC lab in Canada, but offering even more extensive anechoic testing capabilities), where much of the development testing for the BP7001SC took place. My point is that Definitive’s BP7001SC is a serious speaker designed by and for knowledgeable music lovers;as such,it deserves to be evaluated with ears (and minds) wide open. The $3500/pair BP7001SC is a sensitive, full- range, bipolar loudspeaker based on front- and rear-firing D’Appolito driver arrays coupled to a built-in powered subwoofer. Each D’Appolito array comprises two 6" magnesium-framed polymer bass/mid drivers and a 1" annealed- aluminum dome tweeter connected via phase- coherent Linkwitz-Riley crossover networks, though the front and rear arrays use slightly different enclosure volumes, low-frequency- crossover points, and crossover slopes (differ- ences said to promote smoother, more integrat- ed sound, and to improve phase response in the crossover region between the bipolar arrays and the subwoofer). The subwoofer is essentially a built-in version of Definitive’s excellent SuperCube I.Like the SuperCube I,the BP7001SC uses an onboard 1500-watt amplifier to drive one 10" long-throw woofer and two 10" passive radia- tors, but with a fixed crossover point and phase settings that are “digitally synchronized with the bipolar arrays (an LFE input gives users the option of controlling the subwoofer from an AVR or multichannel controller). Plainly, the BP7001SC is a lot of speaker for the money, but is it truly a high-end contender? In four impor- tant areas,it is. First, the BP7001SCs handled large- and small- scale dynamic shifts with grace, finesse, and freedom from compression. The Definitives offered up big musical moments with an expansive and unstrained quality, yet helped the dynamics of quieter passages become more realistic in scale and more delicate and intimate in their appeal. In short, the BP7001SCs got the dynamic envelopes of notes right, bringing instruments and voices alive in a way that made many other speakers seem flattened and com- pressed by comparison. The Liberty City track from Jaco Pastorius’ live The Birthday Concert [Warner Bros.] features a potent big band horn section whose huge swells explode upward and outward in a sonic shower of molten gold. Many speakers have stumbled on this track, but THE HIGH END JOURNAL OF AUDIO & MUSIC TM Definitive Technology BP7001SC SuperTower Loudspeakers Chris Martens I “The BP7001SC is an overachiever of major proportions...”

I have always liked speakers with unconventional radiation (i.e., non-forward-radiating) patterns. The first true audiophile loudspeaker I owned was the KLH 9 full-range electrostatic. This was in 1972. These speakers had a "you are there" imaging presence and boxless sound quality I had never heard before. There were many reasons for this, but an important key to their performance was the fact that they radiated sound both for- ward and rearward. To me, imaging is the real magic in a loudspeaker's performance. All the conventional parameters of a loudspeaker's performance (linear wide frequency response, low distortion, excellent transient response, etc.) are important, but imaging is that elusive quality that brings the musicians into the room or brings you into the concert hall or into the movie. Imaging allows the suspension of disbelief and lets you imagine that what you are listening to is real. The KLH electrostats were wonderful in this regard. Full-range electrostatic panels of that day, including the KLH, however, had many shortcomings, including very high price, large size, difficult power requirements (I used a set of Futterman output transformer-less vacuum tube amplifiers, which did a bet- ter job than most with problematic electrostatic speaker loads), limited dynamic range, limited bass performance, positioning dif- ficulties, etc. It seemed to me that it would be fantastic to create a loudspeaker that brought the benefits of these exotic, impracti- cal panels into a product that made sense for the majority of listeners in the real world. I designed my first bipolar loud- speaker in 1973 or 1974, a narrow- format tower incorporating multi- ple small-diameter bass/midrange drivers arrayed on both the front and rear baffles along with piezoelectric tweeters and passive radiators. It was quite successful in the marketplace. It also brought me a phone call from the great loud- speaker designer Jon Dahlquist (who was also introducing a loud- speaker with a piezoelectric tweet- er—the soon-to-be-famous, time- aligned Dahlquist DQ 10, which was known for its "boxless" sound) and led to a long and enjoyable friend- ship between myself and Jon, as well as with his partner, the late Saul Marantz. (Marantz not only founded the company which still bears his name, but was the creator of a number of classic high end audio components; he also recognized and helped cultivate design talent in others—including Jon Dahlquist and tuner-wizard Dick Sequerra.) Issue 3 April 2004 Sounding Board Definitive Technology’s Sandy Gross on Loudspeaker Design The Case for Bipolar Loudspeakers with Built-in Subwoofers Affordable Excellence in Home Theater, Stereo, Film and Music hris Martens recently reviewed the Definitive Technology BP7001SC Bipolar SuperTower for The Absolute Sound (Issue146). During the review process, I discussed with him at some length two of Definitive's signature technolo- gies, specifically bipolar radiation and built-in powered subwoofers. Chris believed these concepts would be of general interest to AVguide Monthly readers, and asked me to write a short piece describing them (without, of course, turning the article into a 2-page ad for my company). “…our first product, the BP10 loudspeaker, was also a narrow tower with basically two complete full-range driver arrays. One faced forward and the other rearward. This is the basic concept of a bipolar speaker. The two driver arrays radiate sound (in phase with one another) in what is basically an omnidirectional pattern, exactly as sound is radiated in real life from an original sonic event." The introduction of Definitive’s BP7000SC and BP7001SC Bipolar SuperTowers was hailed by the press as “a mind-boggling sonic achievement” with which “Definitive Technology has taken an evolu tionary step to the next level.” Now Definitive is pleased to announce the next three models in the 700 Series. All three combine the dramatic sonic benefits of Definitive’s signature bipolar technology with the impact of built-in SuperCube® derived technology high-power subwoofers plus the 7000 Series’ gorgeous new sculptural styling and advances in crossover technology. And they are all shielded. Of course all three models can be combined with Definitive’s matching center channels (with or without their own built-in powered subwoofers) and Definitive’s matching bipolar rear/side surround speakers for complete home theater surround systems capable of ultimate movie and music reproduction BP7002 Bipolar SuperTower Each BP7002 Bipolar SuperTower combines a new 12" SuperCube derived technology subwoofer driven by a 300-Watt digital amplifier, two pressure driven 12" infrasonic radiators and bipolar dual D’Appolito front and rear mounted driver arrays each consisting of two high definition cast-basket 51/4" Definitive bass/midrange drivers surrounding a 1" annealed pure aluminum dome Definitive tweeter. Newly designed Linkwitz-Riley crossover networks do a superlative job of seamlessly blending the drivers so that the sonic output is totally homogeneous as if radiated from a full-range pulsating sphere This extraordinary speaker comes very close to the reference standards set by the BP7000SC and BP7001SC for ultra-dynamic high-accuracy reproduction and achieves equally superb performance wit both music and home theater program material. It will reproduce a silky smooth, incredibly detailed wall-to-wall floor-to-ceiling sonic image with extraordinary depth at lifelike volume levels (and beyond with a sense of ease that is truly remarkable.
