DefinitiveTechnology’s Ultimate Performance Architectural Speakers “Truly outstanding!” —Home Theater Magazine D efinitive Technology’s total commitment to uncompromised sonic superiority has made us the leader in high perfor- mance loudspeakers. We are pleased to introduce our architectural loudspeakers. This extensive line of reference- quality loudspeakers offers the highest level of sonic performance and construction quality. They are designed for easy in-wall/in-ceiling installation in homes as well as commercial spaces. Sound quality, of course, is extraordi- nary and the speakers have been voiced for warm, rich sonic reproduction by Definitive engineers to the same state-of-the-art, high-end standards as all Definitive loudspeakers. These Remarkable Systems Feature: • Absolute State-of-the-Art Sonic Performance for Music and Home Theater Perfection • Low Diffraction Driver/Baffle Interface • Easy-to-Install Metal Pivoting Dog Mounting System • Ultra-Wide Dispersion for a Huge, Rich, Lifelike Soundfield Throughout Your Room • Pure Aluminum Dome Tweeters w/Silk Surrounds • Rigid Non-Resonant Glass-Filled Low Profile Frames • Cast-Basket Bass/Midrange Drivers (except 63/A& 83/A) • Beautiful Decorator-Approved Designer Styling • Mounting Templates and Paint Masks Included • Optional New Construction Rough-In Kits Available • Easy-to-Paint and Moisture-Resistant • Five-Year Parts and Labor Warranty (UIWs) We offer a wide range of ultimate performance round, rectangular, bipolar, dual-channel and outdoor speakers which are perfect to suit your every archi- tectural need (and your decorator’s too). These critically acclaimed loudspeak- ers have been painstakingly engineered to ensure that they achieve the same level of superior sonic performance as our flagship floor-standing speakers, which are renowned for offering the finest sound quality possible. In addition, their subtle and understated, but beautifully sculpted, upgraded styling will complement any decor. Our architectural speakers utilize the same state-of- the-art components and technologies developed for our top-of-the-line speak- ers including high-definition cast-basket bass/midrange drivers and pure alu- minum dome tweeters. One listen and you will know they are the finest sound- ing architectural in-wall/in-ceiling and outdoor speakers in the world. The Sonic Superiority of Definitive’s Architectural Speakers The most striking difference you will hear when you listen to Definitive speakers is the extremely big, open quality to the sound. Smooth natural sound is produced with a lifelike, three-dimensional character that really brings music and movies to life. It is as if the music or cinematic action is actually being performed live in your home. Of course their performance by all mea- surable parameters is superb, but it is their almost magical ability to suspend disbelief and recreate the illusion of a live performance which really sets our architectural speakers apart. And so does the way their velvety smooth high- definition midrange, crystal clear high frequencies, and deep, tight and impact- ful bass perfectly blend into an ultra-coherent wide-dispersion soundfield which will fill your home with sonic perfection. Our High-Definition Cast-Basket Bass/Midrange Drivers All our architectural speakers (except the UIW 63/A and UIW 83/A) utilize Definitive-developed high-definition cast-basket bass/midrange drivers for sig- nificant performance advantages in the areas of bass reproduction, lifelike midrange clarity and dynamic range. These sophisticated drivers are engineer- ing marvels which incorporate deeply drawn mineral-filled homopolymer cones, combined with butyl rubber dustcaps and surrounds, high-temperature vented voice coils and massive magnet structures. This combination of fea- tures assures high-definition, superb transient response, high-efficiency, high- power handling and extended linear response. In addition, the aerodynamical- ly designed, magnetically inert, non-resonant cast baskets minimize reflections of the sound radiating from the back of the cones and preserve structural and magnetic integrity. Definitive’s Moving-Coil Pure Aluminum Dome Tweeters The accuracy of high frequency reproduction really sets apart a great loud- speaker. The Definitive-developed magnetic fluid-cooled moving-coil pure aluminum dome tweeters are of a unique design that synergistically brings together the performance advantages of metal domes (greater clarity) and soft domes (smoother sound and better dampening) in one state-of-the-art tweeter design. The pure aluminum dome is specially annealed (to “relax” the crystal structure) and acoustically loaded by a precisely configured acoustic phase plug/lens (to assure perfectly controlled, absolutely linear movement). In addi- tion, the unique silk surround provides better dampening and wave termina- tion. The audible benefits of all this highly advanced engineering include vel- vety smooth extended high frequency response (beyond 30 kHz), greatly reduced distortion, improved transient response, notably higher definition and crystal clear lifelike clarity. Non-Resonant Low-Diffraction Baffles Maintain Sonic Purity A speaker’s baffle, as well as the driver/baffle interface, plays a large part in its sonic performance. Diffraction, or the secondary radiation of sound caused by driver and baffle edges and other protrusions and surface anomalies can color the sound and impart a boxy coloration. The UIWs and AW Series speakers are carefully engineered to minimize diffraction problems. In addition, the resonant vibration of a speaker baffle can also impart coloration. We engineer the baffles for maximum stiffness and mold them from a special glass-filled polymer compound in order to eliminate baffle resonance which would otherwise interfere with the pure sound pro- duced by Definitive’s high-definition drivers. Finally, a special wall clamping system was designed which uses special high-tension clamps (and more of them) in order to further stiffen the baffle and eliminate unwanted resonance. The Sonic Benefits of our Extraordinary Bipolar UIW Speakers Definitive Technology is famous for our high-end, floor-standing bipolar speak ers. They have two complete sets of drivers which face in different directions and radiate sound in an omnidirectional pattern, the way sound is radiated in real life. We make two bipolar in-wall/in-ceiling loudspeakers, the UIW BP/A and UIW BPZ/A, which provide you with a lifelike balance of early-arrival information (giving focus, clarity and location data) and properly delayed-arrival information (enhancing spaciousness and conveying the lush three-dimensional soundstage of a live music or cinematic performance). The bipolars literally immerse you in a soundfield which is rich, warm, ultra-clear and vibrantly alive. In addition, the wide-dispersion characteristics of our bipolar speakers assure a superb panorama of lifelike sound for every listener in your room, wherever they sit or stand. The UIW bipolars are perfect for use anywhere you want a high-performance, flush-mount architectural speaker, and they are clearly the in-wall or in-ceiling speakers of choice for side surrounds, rear surrounds or center rear surrounds for Dolby Digital*, Dolby Surround* or any home theater surround sound system. Choose Our Ultimate Performance Architectural Speakers for a Spectacular Built-in Home Theater System In addition to bringing music into every room in your house, Definitive UIW speakers are perfect for a spectacular-sounding, high-performance home theater system. Choosing the perfect system is easy because all Definitive speakers are engineered to have the same timbral balance and sonic signature; so they can all be used together in any combination with excellent results. The top-of-the-line signa- ture Definitive UIW home theater system would use three matching UIW BPZ/As or UIW 75s across the front and UIW BPZ/As as rear and/or side surround speak- ers. This system will sound great and deliver excellent bass without a separate sub- woofer. However, you can add any of Definitive’s superb powered subwoofers for even higher performance. Remember: any combination of UIWs will work well together and deliver superior performance; so pick the ones that best suit your bud- get as well as your specific size, design, mounting and listening requirements. Save Space with Our Unique Two-Channel DCS Speakers With two complete channels in one (angled for proper separation) our UIW DCS speakers are the perfect space-saving solution for providing high quality stereo from a single in-wall/in-ceiling speaker anywhere in your home that you want beautiful music. The DCSs are also perfect as a single speaker two-channel rear surround for Dolby Digital, Prologic* and EX* or as a single rear plus side surround for Dolby EX (two DCSs will reproduce all four surround channels). “beyond amazing” HOT new system review UIW RLS II & IWSub Reference DEFINITIVE TECHNOLOGY’S y first draft of the intro for this review was rather witty, if I do say so myself. It lamented the fact that because so many of today’s in-wall speakers are so good, it’s difficult to write something interesting about them. But I composed those opening paragraphs before I had actually listened to the speakers. Much as I hate to throw away a perfectly good intro, it would no longer do — because it was no longer true. One could not consider Definitive Technology’s UIW RLS II in-wall speaker and IWSub Reference in-wall subwoofer to be ordinary products, even at first glance. Take the UIW RLS II’s pair of passive radia- tors, which Definitive added to fix one of the biggest problems with high-quality in-walls: lack of bass. Like most high-end in-walls, the UIW RLS II has an integral enclosure, or back box. A back box improves fidelity because it keeps sound from the back of the woofer from entering the wall cavity, and thus keeps the wall from vibrating and producing its own sound. However, pressure that builds up inside the back box restricts the woofer and diminishes deep bass response. But using passive radiators relieves this pressure and uses it to produce even more bass. Also, the UIW RLS II’s slim front baffle increases mounting flexibility. Many in-walls are wide, so your installer can move them only an inch or two to either side before hit- ting a stud. With the UIW RLS II, though, your installer can move the speaker several inches to the left or right. This characteristic is particularly important if the speakers are mounted behind a perforated screen. With smaller screens, it can be tough to cram left, center, and right speakers behind the screen without having to move a stud or two. The IWSub Reference in-wall sub is even more unusual. Subwoofers are the final fron- tier of in-wall speaker engineering because few good woofers are slim enough to fit into a standard 3.5-inch-deep wall. Plus, sub- woofers demand a back box to perform well, and the back box takes up even more space. Definitive is among the first manufacturers who have risen to this engineering challenge. NEW REVIEWS “it’s really beyond amazing” SECOND DRAFT Definitive Technology’s UIW RLS II and IWSub Reference surrender enough surprises to make a lazy editor rewrite his review. M BY BRENT BUTTERWORTH “I can think of no other in-wall speaker system that matches this one’s versatility, sound quality, and value” Cover photo: Clockwise from far left: the UIW RLS II with its grille on, the IWSub Reference with its grille off, and the SubAmp 600. “the system wraps me in a huge ambient soundstage” The IWSub Reference employs a 13-inch woofer that has been radically slimmed to fit in a wall; it’s such a tight fit that Definitive had to cut a hole in the back of the enclosure to accommodate the woofer’s magnet. A 13- inch passive radiator reinforces the woofer’s deepest bass notes. A separate amplifier, the SubAmp 600, fits into your equipment rack. The SubAmp 600 is a stereo amp; it pro- vides 275 watts to a sin- gle IWSub Reference or 230 watts each to two IWSub References. Does the UIW RLS II sound as good as many excellent in-walls already on the market? Actually, it sounds better than most. If this speaker has a flaw, I cannot find it. (OK, the product name sucks. But besides that.) It sounds at least as good as any other in-wall I have tested, and given that I started evaluating these speakers regularly in 1995, I have tested quite a few. From the bass to the high treble, it sounds as uncolored as any speaker that comes to mind. I hear pinpoint imaging between the speakers, and the system wraps me in a huge ambient soundstage. The UIW RLS II does not match the soundstag- ing of the best freestand- ing speakers, but it comes close — and it is far bet- ter in this regard than practically any current in-wall speaker except for the MartinLogan Voyage and Thiel PowerPlane. NEW REVIEWS “is far better in this regard than practically any current in- wall speaker” The IWSub Reference (below) uses an active 13-inch woofer on top and a passive radiator below. In order to maintain rigidity in the woofer’s shallow cone, Definitive made it from stiff, thick treated paper; it feels almost like a thin sheet of MDF. “The IWSub Reference is certainly the best in-wall sub I have heard” The two 6.5-inch passive radiators used in the UIW RLS II (right) are like speaker without magnets or voice coils. They reinforce the speaker’s bass and negate the downside of using a back box.

AU D I O R E V I E W | G a r y A l t u n i a n Definitive Technology UIW RLS II efinitive Technology is an acknowl- edged leader in the loudspeaker indus- try,and a brand that is respected among audio and home-theater enthusiasts alike. The firm manufactures a variety of freestanding speakers, lifestyle, all- weather and in-wall speakers. The UIW (Ultimate In- Wall) RLS II is the company’s flagship in-wall model, with a suggested retail price of $650 each. Unlike the OEM Systems speakers, the RLS IIs are built with a back box or enclosure, minimizing the performance variances caused by walls’ structures — a good feature. The enclosure is very solid, inert and heavy, but easy to install and is held in place with ten dogleg clamps. The Definitive Technology RLS II is a two-way speaker with two 6 1/2-inch mid-bass drivers, two 6 1/2-inch pressure-driven passive radiators, and a 1-inch aluminum dome tweeter in a D’Appolito line array of drivers. This proven design features a vertically symmetrical driver array with the tweeter centrally positioned between the two mid-bass drivers and their associated passive radiators, a con- figuration thought to promote more even off-axis response compared with asymmetrical driver arrays. I noticed immediately two characteristics about the RLS IIs: a deep soundstage and sweet, detailed high frequencies. Rebecca Pidgeon’s “Spanish Harlem” was virtually three-dimensional, with a sound field extending well beyond the outer edges of the speakers with lots of depth behind the speak- ers. Pidgeon’s naturally sweet voice sounded very smooth, complemented by the detail in the percus- sion instruments in the recording.I noticed the same detail in John William’s By Request: The Best of John Williams and the Boston Pops Orchestra [Philip Records],a selection of orchestral film sound- tracks. In “March From Midway,”the clarity of the tri- angle was easily distinguished in the mix,and the full impact of the Boston Pops Orchestra came through beautifully in “1941” from the same disc, as did a deep and broad soundstage. Although the printed specifications for the RLS II indicates that low frequency response extends to 22 Hz, the speakers require a subwoofer for full, balanced sound quality.Without the two Morel subs, the RLS IIs exhibited rather tubby and punchy mid- bass, but that was easily corrected with the addition of the subs. When the crossover points were adjust- ed correctly, the Definitive Technology in-walls blended well with the subwoofers and the tubby nature of the bass disappeared. The RLS IIs have wide horizontal dispersion, an important characteristic for in-wall speakers, since they can’t be toed-in towards the listening position.Off-axis response remained very good even when listeners were seated well away from the sweet spot. I noticed another characteristic about the RLS IIs: More than has been the case with other speakers I have reviewed, the sound quality of the RLS IIs improved significantly with extended break-in. My initial impression was that vocals in all recordings sounded distant through the RLS IIs, a layer or two behind other aspects of the recordings, but midrange clarity and vocal presence improved dra- matically with additional playing time. For example, Diana Krall’s voice in Let’s Face the Music and Dance [Verve Records] at first sounded withdrawn, but displayed much greater (and much more appro- priate) presence after several hours of playing — almost as if Krall had suddenly moved closer to the microphone. Similarly, the fully broken-in RLS IIs made Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler sound down right live on “There’ll Be Some Changes Made”from the guitar duet’s Neck and Neck [Columbia Records].With increased use, the speakers revealed much greater midrange presence, openness, and transparency. It was evident that the two 6 1/2-inch drivers took additional time to loosen up and the result was worth the wait. Summary The Definitive Technology RLS IIs offer a sweet high end with lots of detail and good imaging and sound- staging qualities. They also have broad dispersion owing to their D’Appolito configuration. When allowed to breaking for several hours, the speakers open up and reveal excellent midrange and vocal characteristics. They do need a subwoofer to reach the lowest octaves of bass, but once a sub is added, they sound superb. Painting Your In-Wall Loudspeakers All Ultimate In-Wall Loudspeakers are easily paintable and are shipped with plastic paint masks (which should be retained even if you initially decide not to paint the speakers). The grill and frame must be painted separately, and for best results, prior to installation. For the grill, spray painting is the recommended method. Follow the paint manufacturer’s directions for ventilation and correct spraying procedure. Be very careful not to clog the speaker grill with too heavy a coat of paint as this will impair system sonic performance. For the frame, spray painting is preferred but brush or roller will also give good results. The supplied frame masks should be put in place to protect the speaker components for whichever method you choose. 3
