Elegant Professional Recording With a location recording pedigree which includes the original portable timecode DAT machines (PD-2, PD-4), and more recently the innovative PD-6 DVD-RAM recorder, it was only natural that Fostex should develop the FR-2, the acclaimed professional CompactFlash-based field recorder. And now, it seems, Fostex have done it again with the launch of the new FR-2LE - a compact audio recorder designed from the ground-up to meet the needs of professionals in the field. For a start, the FR-2LE records to CompactFlash in Broadcast WAV Format (BWF) at 24bit 96kHz quality. It’s equipped with two professional phantom powered XLR microphone inputs (XLR-phone combo) complete with precise control over the recording level. It features a 1 take = 1 file recording system which eliminates overwrites and the 2 second ‘pre-record’ buffer means there should never be a missed take or lost soundbite. There’s even an MP3 mode and built-in stereo microphones designed for interviews. Feature rich and elegant in operation, the pedigree of the new FR-2LE looks assured. DATE : SUBJECT : MODEL : February 23, 2004 FR-2 Software Update to V1.03 FR-2 The FR-2 software has been updated to V1.03 to add and rectify the following points. Referring to the attached software update procedures PDF file, update the FR-2 software accordingly. The WinZip compressed software update file “fr02_V103.zip” is attached for your update. 1. FR-2 with the V1.03 software now allows to record and reproduce data onto the Toshiba and other third party’s PCM/CIA HD. 2. FR-2 with the V1.03 software can directly be connected to the USB port of Macintosh computer with OS10.2 or later by putting FR-2 into the USB mode for data transfer. CAUTION: Although the FR-2 recording medium (CF card, PCM/CIA HD) is formatted by FAT-32, Macintosh computer with OS9.X.X does not comply to FAT-32 format. Do not connect FR-2 to Macintosh computer with OS9.X.X. If you do so, the recorded files on the medium will collapse. 3. The cue point register by the press of MARK CUE key in the PLAY mode is not correctly executed on FR-2 with the previous software. This bug has been rectified on the V1.03 software. 4. The new SETUP mode “MaxFileSize” has been added on FR-2 with the V1.03 software. This allows to create a file with the capacity up to 4GB. Please be careful that the maximum capacity of one file differs depending on the PC OS version to which the FR-2 recorded data is to be transferred. 5. The current drive indication (CF: CF card, PC: PCM/CIA HD) on the LCD has been newly added on the V1.03 software.

FR-2 Software Update Procedures 1. Prepare a Compact Flash (CF) card used on FR-2. 2. Copy the software file (e.g. fr02_mv1.03) to the CF card root directory by either the following method. 1) Insert the CF card into a CF card reader / writer connected to your PC (Windows 98SE, ME, 2000 or XP) USB port. 2) Put FR-2 into the USB mode. Then, connect FR-2 to PC (Windows ME, 2000 or XP) USB port using USB cable. 3. Power OFF FR-2 (if it is powered ON). 4. Insert the CF card into the FR-2 CF card slot. 5. While pulling the REC lever to the right, power on FR-2. Until the following will appear on the LCD, keep on pulling the REC lever. After about 20 seconds or so, “Completed!”, “4 digits checksum” and “Please wait!” messages appear on the LCD. Then, FR-2 automatically shuts off. 7. Confirm if the FR-2 software has been correctly updated to the latest one by “MENU -> SETUP -> Version” and pressing the MENU/ENTER key. 8. Power on FR-2. Initialize the SETUP settings by “MENU -> Setup -> Init Setup” and pressing the MENU/ ENTER knob (twice).

Model 8347 TC card for the Model FR-2 The Model 8347 is the TC card for the FR-2 field memory recorder. By installing this TC card to the FR-2, you can record external (SMPTE) time code or time code generated by the internal TC generator. In addition, by jamming the internal TC generator to external time code, you can record audio signals to the FR-2 while maintaining synchroniza- tion between the FR-2 and a VTR. This feature makes the FR-2 ideal for newsgathering applications. This manual describes details about time code recording/playback func- tions which are available when installing the TC card to the FR-2. Read this manual together with the main manual and keep it for future reference. The Model 8347 should be installed into the FR-2 at a Fostex service station. Do not try to install the card by yourself. Ask your local Fostex dealer for the installation after purchasing the Model 8347.
