The device contains reusable silica crystals, which are not user serviceable and should not be taken out form the device. Any use other than that described above will lead to damage to the product and may present additional risks. How Does it Work? Silica gel crystals, also known as waterglass or liquid glass, are non-toxic, odorless and usually colorless pebbles that safely and effectively absorb moisture from the air in their vicinity. Silica gel crystals have better dehumidifying abilities, with absorption rates far greater than that of traditional soluble humidity-absorbing products. They are also reusable, which means lower long-term costs as well as less waste. When the ambient temperature reaches 20% relative humidity (RH), the silica gel crystals start absorbing moisture from the air. At 40% RH, the crystals reach more than 20% absorption capacity. Once the temperature rises past the 60% RH mark, the crystals reach 34% absorption capacity. As the crystals continue to absorb more moisture, they gradually change in color from dark blue to pink, as can be seen in the device’s little window. Fully pink crystals mean they are full of water and need to be “recharged.” Depending on the area’s moisture level, a fully charged dehumidifier unit should last an average of 20-30 days before the crystals turn fully pink.
