First, there’s the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect Wireless-G (802.11g) or Wireless-B (802.11b) devices to the network. There’s also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired- Ethernet devices. Connect four PCs directly, or daisy-chain out to more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Third, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. And finally, the Virtual Private Network (VPN) function creates encrypted “tunnels” through the Internet so up to 50 remote or traveling users can securely connect to your office network from off-site, or users in your branch office can connect to a corporate network. To protect your data and privacy, the Wireless-G VPN Broadband Router can encrypt all wireless transmissions with 128-bit WEP encryption, and also supports the industrial-strength wireless security of 802.1x authentication and authorization. The Router can serve as a DHCP Server, and has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks. It can be configured to filter internal users’ access to the Internet, and has MAC or IP address filtering so you can specify exactly who has access to your network. Configuration is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility. The following instructions apply only to Windows 2000 or XP using the Classic interface (in which the icons and menus look like previous Win- dows versions). A Click the Start button. Select Settings and click the Control Panel icon. Double-click the Network and Dial-up Connections icon. B Select the Local Area Connec- tion icon for the applicable Ethernet adapter (usually it is the first Local Area Connection listed). Double-click the Local Area Connection. Click the Properties button. C Make sure the box next to Inter- net Protocol (TCP/IP) is checked. Highlight Internet Pro- tocol (TCP/IP), and click the Properties button. D Select Obtain an IP address automatically. Once the new window appears, click the OK button. Click the OK button again to complete the PC configuration, then restart your computer. Proceed to Step 3. E C Configure the PCs B D GHz 2.454Mbps There are two ways to configure the Router. Choose one of the following: • Run the Setup CD-ROM - It is strongly recommended that you use the Setup CD-ROM to install the Router. Insert the Setup CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and follow the on-screen instructions. •Use this Quick Installation guide - If you wish, you can use the Router’s web-based utility to install the Router. Proceed to Step 1, and follow the Quick Installation’s instructions. A Before you begin, make sure that you have the setup infor- mation for your specific type of Internet connection. The instal- lation technician from your ISP should have left this informa- tion with you after installing your broadband connection. If not, you can call your ISP to request the settings. B Make sure that all of your net- work’s hardware is powered off, including the Router, PCs, and cable or DSL modem. C Connect one end of an Ethernet network cable to one of the LAN ports (labeled 1-4) on the back of the Router (see Figure C), and the other end to an Ethernet port on a PC. 1 Connect the Router D Repeat this step to connect more PCs, a switch, or other network devices to the Router. E Connect a different Ethernet net- work cable from your cable or DSL modem to the Internet port on the Router’s back panel (see Figure E.) This is the only port that will work for your modem connection. F Power on the cable or DSL modem. G Connect the power adapter to the Router’s Power port (see Figure G), and then plug the other end into an electrical outlet. H Power on the following devices in this order: cable or DSL modem, Router, and PCs. I The Power and Internet LEDs on the front panel will light up green as soon as the power adapter is con- nected properly. The Power LED will flash for a few seconds. It will light up steady when the self-test is complete. If this LED stays on for one minute or longer, see “Appendix A: Troubleshoot- ing.”in the User Guide on the Setup Wizard CD-ROM. The Router’s hardware installation is now complete. Proceed to Step 2 NOTE: Before setting up the Router, make sure your PCs are configured to obtain an IP (or TCP/IP) address automatically from the Router. IMPORTANT: Make sure to use the power adapter that is sup- plied with the Router. Use of a different power adapter could damage the Router. C G
