Power Supply Technical Information 1 Power supplies Power Supply Technical Information Power Supply Overview ■What is a Power Supply? Commercial AC power distributed from power plants cannot be supplied directly to the ICs and other electronic components built into electronic devices in automated office and factory equipment without destroying the components due to the high voltage of commercial AC power. Devices called power supplies or regulated DC power supplies are therefore required to convert commercial AC power into regulated DC power to drive ICs and other electronic components. ■Regulated DC Power Supplies The methods for controlling Regulated DC Power Supplies can be largely classified into the following two types. Switch-mode power supplies and linear power supplies are generally referred to as power supplies. Currently, switch-mode power supplies are the most prevalent. ● Switch-mode Power Supplies Switch-mode power supplies convert commercial AC power into the required high-frequency DC power using the high-speed switching of semiconductors. Switch-mode power supplies are so compact, light, and efficient that they are used as power supplies by most electronic devices. Advantages Disadvantages ■Power Supply Selection ● Basic Selection Points Factors to consider when selecting a Power Supply are provided in the following diagram. Switch-mode Power Supplies Linear Power Supplies Regulated DC Power Supplies Detection circuit Pulse width modulator Converts AC into DC by rectifying and smoothing AC. DC OUT AC IN Steps down the voltage with a high- frequency (40 to 200 kHz) transformer. The primary and secondary sides are insulated from each other. Controls the high-frequency switching pulse width and frequency to stabilize the output. • Highly efficient. • Compact, and light. • A wide input voltage range. • Switching noise is generated. • Large inrush current on primary side. (1) Input Voltage Each Power Supply has an input voltage range. Select the Power Supply according to the available input voltage. (3) Safety Standards Power Supplies with UL, CSA, or VDE approval, or CE Marking are available. (4) Shape and Mounting Method Power Supplies of various shapes are available. Use the most suitable Power Supply according to the application. Various mounting brackets are also available. (2) Output Capacity (Voltage × Current) The maximum load capacity must be less than the maximum output capacity of the Power Supply. Power Supply Load

Fig.7 ■ Output Voltage Adjustment Default Setting: Set at the rated voltage Adjustable Range: Adjustable with "V.ADJ "⑥ on the front surface of the product from –10% to +15% of the rated output voltage. Turning clockwise increases the output voltage, and turning counterclockwise decreases the output voltage. Notes: 1. If the output voltage is adjusted to less than –10 % of the rated value by the V.ADJ adjuster, the undervoltage alarm indicator may operate. 2. The output voltage may increase beyond the allowable voltage range when the operation is performed for “V.ADJ” ⑥ . When adjusting the output voltage, check the output voltage of the power supply and be sure that the load is not destroyed. ■ Dielectric Strength Test Rated dielectric strength: 3000VAC between and for 1 minute. When testing, set the cutoff current for the withstand voltage test device to 20mA. Notes: 1.Sudden switching of 3000VAC may possibly cause a voltage surge, damaging the power supply. Increase/decrease test voltage gradually. 2.When performing the test, be sure to short-circuit all the output terminals to protect them from damage. ■ Insulation Resistance Test When testing the insulation resistance of the power supply, use a DC ohmmeter at 500VDC. Note: When performing the test, be sure to short-circuit all the output terminals to protect them from damage. Entfernen Sie beim Prüfen Verdrahtungen an Last. (85 - 264 V c.a.). ■ Overload Protection The power supply is automatically protected from short-circuit or overcurrent damage by the overload protection function. Overload protection is activated if the output current rises above 105% of the rated current. When the output current returns within the rated range, overload protection is automatically cleared. Notes: 1.If the power supply has been short-circuited or supplied with an overcurrent longer than 20 seconds, the internal parts of the power supply may occasionally be deteriorated or damaged. 2.The internal parts may possibly be deteriorated or damaged. Do not use the product for applications where the load causes frequent inrush current and overload. ■ Overvoltage Protection This power supply automatically protects itself and the load from overvoltage. Overvoltage protection is activated if the output voltage rises above approx. 130% of the rated output voltage. To reset the power supply, leave the power supply off for more than 3 minutes and then turn it on again. Note: Be sure to clear the cause of the overvoltage, before turning on the power supply. ■ Undervoltage Alarm Indication LED (DC LOW red) lights to warn of output voltage drop. Detection voltage is set to approx, 80 % (75 to 90 %) of the rated output voltage. Note: This function monitors the voltage at the power supply output terminals. To check actual voltage, measure voltage on the load side. ■ In Case there is No Output Voltage The possible cause for no output voltage may be the presence of an overload or overvoltage condition, or may be due to the functioning of an internal protective device. The internal protection may operate if a large amount of surge voltage, such as a lightening surge, occurs while turning on the power supply. If there is no output voltage, please check the following points before contacting us: • Check the Overload Protected Status: Check whether the load is in overload status or is short-circuited. Remove wires to load when checking. • Attempt to clear the overvoltage or latching protection function: Turn the power supply off once, and leave it off for at least 3 minutes. Then turn it on again to see if this clears the condition. ■ Conformance to EU Directives Refer to the catalogue and this instruction manual for details on the operating condition for EMC-compliance.
