To fully benefit from the support that Philips offers, register your product at www.philips.com/welcome. SENSEO® coffee system Make your coffee moments truly special with SENSEO®. This unique system combines the easy-to-use Philips SENSEO® coffee machine with the specially developed Douwe Egberts SENSEO® coffee pods, giving you a full, smooth coffee with a delicious foam layer. To ensure a smooth and full coffee taste, you should keep the following things in mind: Clean cold water Use clean cold water every day. If you have not used the coffee machine for one day, you have to flush it with clean cold water before you use it again. To flush the machine, fill the water reservoir with clean cold water, place a bowl or 2 cups under the coffee spout and press the 2-cup button a few times to brew hot water until the water reservoir is empty. Fresh coffee pods Use the SENSEO® coffee pods that have been specially developed by Douwe Egberts for your SENSEO® coffee machine for a full, round taste. Clean machine Clean and descale the Philips SENSEO® coffee machine regularly. For more information on why it is important to descale, when to descale and how to descale or which descaler to use, visit our website at www.philips.com/descale-senseo. Important Read this user manual carefully before you use the machine and save it for future reference. Danger - Never immerse the machine in water or any other liquid. Warning - Connect the machine to an earthed wall socket. - Check if the voltage indicated on the bottom of the machine corresponds to the local mains voltage before you connect the machine. - This machine can be used by children aged from 8 years and above and persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities or lack of experience and knowledge if they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the machine in a safe way and understand the hazards involved. Children shall not play with the machine. Cleaning and user maintenance shall not be made by children unless they are 8 years and above and supervised. - Keep the machine and its cord out of the reach of children aged less than 8 years. - Do not use the machine if the plug, the mains cord or the machine itself is damaged. - If the mains cord is damaged, you must have it replaced by Philips, a service centre authorised by Philips or similarly qualified persons in order to avoid a hazard. Caution - Always return the machine to a service centre authorised by Philips for examination or repair. Do not attempt to repair the machine yourself, otherwise your guarantee becomes invalid. - After unpacking the machine, never put your SENSEO® machine on its side. Always keep it in upright position, also during transport. - Never put normal ground coffee or use torn pods in the SENSEO® machine, as this causes it to become blocked. - Do not use the machine in combination with a transformer, as this could cause hazardous situations. - Always put the machine on a flat and stable surface. - Do not place the appliance on a hotplate, directly next to a hot oven, heater or similar source of heat. - Descale the machine at least every 3 months. Not doing so may cause the machine to stop working properly. In this case, repair is not covered under your warranty. - Never let the machine operate unattended. - Do not use the machine at altitudes higher than 2200 metres above sea level. - Do not use the machine at a temperature below 0°C. Water left in the machine may freeze and cause damage. - Never pour any other liquid than clean cold water into the water reservoir. - Never flush the machine or let it brew coffee when the spout is not in place. - Flush the coffee machine with fresh water before you use it for the first time (see chapter ‘First use’). This causes the system to fill with water, which is essential for the machine to work properly. - Do not use the SENSEO® machine in combination with water softeners based on sodium exchange. - Philips strongly advises you to descale this SENSEO® regularly. If the machine is not descaled in time and according to the procedure described in chapter ‘Descaling’, this may lead to technical failures. - Never interrupt the descaling process. - Never use a descaling agent based on mineral acids such as sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, sulphamic acid and acetic acid (e.g. vinegar). These descaling agents may damage your SENSEO® coffee machine. - After unpacking the machine, never put your SENSEO® machine on its side. Always keep it in upright position, also during transport. Problem Solution Check if the float in the water reservoir is stuck. Empty the water reservoir and shake it a few times to release the float. Clean the water reservoir with hot water and some washing-up liquid or in the dishwasher. I cannot open the lid. A temporary vacuum has developed under the lid. Switch off the coffee machine. Pull up the lever and wait 24 hours before you open the lid. You may need to use some force. Always make sure the pod holders are clean and the sieve is not clogged to prevent vacuum. The coffee machine produces less coffee than before. Make sure the intensity switch on the front of the machine is in the right setting. When you adjust the switch, the volume in the cup is also adjusted (HD7833, HD7831 only). Check the pod holder. If the sieve is clogged, use a washing-up brush to unclog the sieve. If you cannot clean it properly with the washing-up brush, put the pod holder in the machine and descale the machine (see chapter CALC). Descale the machine (see CALC). When I press the 1-cup or 2-cup button, the brewing briefly stops and then continues again. This Philips SENSEO® coffee machine features a new brewing technology. Just before it starts brewing your coffee, the machine first carefully doses a small amount of hot water onto the pod. This pre-brewing ensures that the coffee gets time to bloom before the water starts flowing for actual brewing. Water leaks from the machine. Make sure that you do not overfill the water reservoir. Check that you place the water reservoir on the appliance correctly. Check the pod holder. If the sieve is clogged, use a washing-up brush to unclog the sieve. If you cannot clean it properly with the washing-up brush, put the pod holder in the machine and descale the machine (see chapter CALC). Make sure that the coffee pod has been put properly in the centre of the pod holder. In all other cases, contact the Philips Consumer Care Centre in your country. I cannot close the lid properly. Check if a used coffee pod is sticking to the water distribution disc. If this is the case, remove the used pod. Check if you used the correct pod holder. Use 2 pods in combination with the deeper 2-cup pod holder. The SENSEO® coffee is not strong enough. Make sure that the intensity switch is in the position you want (HD7833, HD7831 only). Make sure that you place the coffee pod(s) properly in the centre of the pod holder and ensure the coffee in the pod is evenly distributed. If you prefer a more robust flavour, SENSEO® coffee pods with a stronger blend are available. The SENSEO® coffee is too strong. Make sure that the intensity switch is in the position you want (HD7833, HD7831 only). If you prefer a milder flavour, SENSEO® coffee pods with a milder blend are available. The coffee is not hot enough. Do not use cups that are too large, as they cause the coffee to get cold more quickly. Make sure the cups have a capacity of at least 150ml. The machine has been stored in a room that was not frost-free. Contact the Philips Consumer Care Centre in your country. Tips and instructions Flush the machine before first use and if the machine has not been used for one day. After the flushing cycle (which only takes approx. 2 minutes), the machine is ready for brewing SENSEO® coffee. - Select the desired coffee strength by turning the intensity switch. By adapting the strength, you increase or decrease the amount of coffee in the cup (HD7833, HD7831). - While the machine is heating up, you can select the number of cups you want to brew. The machine brews the cup or cups immediately after it has heated up. - The machine is intended for normal household use only. It is not intended for use in environments such as staff kitchens of shops, offices, farms or other work environments. Nor is it intended to be used by clients in hotels, motels, bed and breakfast and other residential environments. Compliance with standards - This Philips appliance complies with all applicable standards and regulations regarding exposure to electromagnetic fields. - The energy consumption of this machine in off mode is less than 1 watt. This means that this machine complies with European Directive 2005/32/EC, which sets the ecological design requirements for energy-using products. Frost-free storage If you already used the coffee machine and have therefore already flushed it with water, you may only use and store it in a frost-free place to prevent it from becoming damaged. Recycling - This symbol means that this product shall not be disposed of with normal household waste (2012/19/EU) (Fig. 1). - Follow your country‘s rules for the separate collection of electrical and electronic products. Correct disposal helps prevent negative consequences for the environment and human health. Troubleshooting This chapter summarises the most common problems you could encounter with the machine. If you are unable to solve the problem with the information below, visit www.philips.com/support for a list of frequently asked questions or contact the Consumer Care Centre in your country. Problem Solution The CALC light flashes. You have pressed the 1-cup button and the 2-cup button at the same time. This started the descaling cycle. If you did not intend to start the descaling cycle, simply press the on/off button to switch off the machine. If you did intend to start the descaling cycle, do not interrupt this cycle but let the appliance operate until the water reservoir is empty. The CALC light lights up continuously after descaling. The descaling procedure has not been completed. Perform the descaling procedure as described in chapter CALC. Do not switch off the machine during descaling. Water continued to flow from the spout when I used the machine for the first time. The machine was performing the flushing cycle. You have to place a bowl of 1.5 litres under the spout. The light ring around the on/off button continues to flash rapidly. Make sure that there is enough water in the water reservoir and that the water reservoir is placed properly. There is not enough water in the water reservoir (i.e. above the MIN level if you want to brew 1 cup).

For your safety be sure the plug is disconnected from the mains! The product is designed for easy access to the internal components. Make sure that all accessories like tank, podholder, drip tray, spout and collector have been removed. To remove the back cover, follow below steps: • Remove the two Torx screws (T15) A (see exploded view). • Remove the valve outlet. • Start at the upper side of the back cover, using a flat head screwdriver to unhook the top of the back cover and gently pull the back cover from the appliance so that a little chink between back cover and brew chamber becomes visible. • Again use the screwdriver to unhook the two “snap locks” at each side of the back cover, and gently move the screwdriver in the direction of the opposite side of the appliance, in such a way that the lips of the snap locks are bent outwards and unhook. • If all snap locks are unhooked, it is possible to remove the back cover. Gently pull the back cover upwards to release the bottom part of the back cover from the housing. Please note that the back cover is still connected to the pump. • For reassembly follow these steps backwards. To remove the brew chamber lid cover, follow below steps: • Place a large screwdriver on the positions (see picture 1) and lift the cover over the snap locks on both positions, use appropriate force. • The cover lid can now be lifted up, but stays attached to the brew head by the push rod, to remove the complete cover including lever and push rod squeeze both legs of the push rod strongly together (see picture 2), so that the two pins will unhook out of the hinge position on the brew chamber. • To remove lever from lid cover, take a screwdriver and bend carefully the two lips/ribs in the lid cover outwards and push the lever with force out of the hinge. • To reassemble, follow steps backwards, without using a screwdriver. ! picture 1 picture 2 To remove the brew chamber head assy, follow below steps: • Remove the back cover. • Place the appliance in front of you in such a way that you are facing the rear side of the appliance. • First remove the boiler from the snap lock position of the brew chamber. • To remove the brew chamber, use your both thumbs (see picture 3) and push strongly with a little distortion (rotation) until the brew chamber comes loose (upwards). • Reassemble follow above steps backwards. To reach the components placed inside the base (for example exchange the NTC temperature sensor) follow below steps: • First remove back cover, three-way valve and boiler. • The brew chamber can be removed by unhooking the two snap locks behind the boiler, pull the brew chamber upwards to remove it from the housing. • Remove both Torx T15 screws B (see exploded view). • Unhook the two snap locks on the back side of the base with a screwdriver (see base), the housing can now be removed. • To remove the rest of the housing unlock the last 4 snap locks on the base and gently pull of the front cover. • To reassemble follow above steps backwards. OPTIONAL (accessories) • No specific issues picture 3 HD7833/50 /51 3-8 Note: Please note after replacing the boiler the appliance has to be restored to factory default. The fi lling procedure (cold fl ush), known from the predecessor Senseo’s is no longer available after the fl ush before fi rst use has been executed. When the “restore to factory default” procedure is not carried out, a new and empty boiler can be switched on, without having the protection of the initial fl ush procedure, causing the thermal fuses in the heating element to fail. After a boiler replacement or drained system, carry out the “Restore boiler_empty_fl ag to factory default” procedure! Then the initial fl ush procedure can be carried out. Descaling Descaling is an important element in Senseo maintenance. It should be done at least once every 3 months, up to 6 times a Year! This will prolong the life of your appliance and will guarantee optimal brewing results for a long time. Use the correct descaling agent. Only citric acid-based descalers are suitable for descaling the SENSEO® machine. This type of descaler descales the appliance without damaging it. For the correct amount, see under ‘Descaling procedure’ below. Each descaling mixture can be used only once. After use, the descaling mixture is no longer active. We advise you to use the special SENSEO® Descaler (HD7006). Read the instructions on the package of the descaling agent. Never use a descaling agent based on mineral acids such as sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, sulphamic acid and acetic acid (e.g. vinegar). These descaling agents may damage your SENSEO® coff ee machine. Follow the steps in the section headed “Descale the appliance” see DFU (Direction for Use manual). ! Volume adjustment The PCB circuit board makes it possible to adjust the volume output by means of pushing the one-cup and two-cup user controls. How to adjust the volume output: 1. Make sure the boiler is fi lled properly, otherwise perform fi ll procedure see DFU for instructions. 2. Switch appliance on and wait until the unit is ready to brew. 3. Make sure a pod holder is placed, but without a Coff ee POD. (Only adjusting with plain water) 4. Place a cup on the drip tray cover and push the one- cup button. 5. When the appliance has fi nished it is stabilized to perform the volume adjustment. 6. Empty the cup, podholder and push again for one cup setting, measure the volume output with a graduated beaker. In the table you can fi nd the requirements for the minimum / maximum volume output cc/mL values depending from the country version: One-cup setting, Including Pod holder, water spec. (Without Coff ee pod) Min. water cc/mL Max. water cc/mL Small cup (60 ml) 61 81 Normal cup (125 ml) 123 143 7. Unplug the appliance from the mains. 8. Press the 1- and 2 cup button simultaneously and plug the mains on. 9. When above step succeeded the LED will turn on continuously. 10. Depending if the volume has to de- or increase you have to push the one- or two cup button. Every time you push the 1- or 2 cup button the LED will turn off for 0.5 second (feedback to user) and the pump time will be shortened or lengthened for 0.5 seconds depending which button was pushed. Pushing 1 cup button pump, time will be shorten with 0.5 sec is approximately - 3.5 cc/mL (less coff ee) Pushing 2 cup button pump, time will be lengthen with 0.5 sec is approximately + 3.5 cc/mL more coff ee) When the volume has to increase with 10 cc for example, push the 2 cup button 3 times. The new value will be stored when you switch the appliance off by pushing the main switch. (LED will turn off ). 11. Turn appliance on again and brew one cup, measure the volume. In case the volume is not within specifi cation repeat steps 6 - 11. 12. End. Repair instruction HD7833/50 /51 4-8 Repair instruction Filling procedure: Please note, the software of the Senseo Viva Café has changed, compared to predecessor Senseo’s! The fi lling procedure known from predecessor Senseo’s is no longer available. The command originally used to initiate the fi lling procedure (cold fl ush: pushing both the 1-cup and 2-cup buttons simultaneously) will now start the decalcifi cation process. To perform a cold fl ush of the appliance, it has to be reset to factory default. See topic “Restoring the Boiler_ empty_fl ag to factory default” below. As a back-up, when the appliance is in factory default setting, the cold fl ush will also be initiated when the user presses either the 1-cup or the 2-cup button. This functionality is only available after restoring the Boiler_ empty_fl ag to factory default. Restoring the Boiler_empty_fl ag to factory default Under some circumstances it might be necessary that the boiler of the Senseo is emptied. This, for instance, during wintertime were the possibility exists that the boiler becomes frozen during transport. For those occasions it is useful to restore the Boiler_ empty_fl ag to production default. Bringing the Senseo back into production status, has the benefi t that the fl ush routine will be activated automatically when installed by the consumer, see topic Automatic fi lling procedure. To SET the Boiler_empty_fl ag: Keep the 1-cup button pressed while plugging in the power cord of the appliance. The main switch LED will blink very rapidly for approximately 1 second. To check if the Boiler_empty_fl ag is really set, you should reconnect the power cord a second time to the net and push the main switch. The main switch LED should light continuously.
