Business Solutions Division PRV-9000 FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) What type of recordable DVD media is supported on the PRV-9000? The PRV-9000 DVD-Video Recorder is a DVD-R and DVD-RW device. It can record on to DVD-R for General (write-once) media or DVD-RW version 1.1 or higher (re-writable) media. What type of video formats can be recorded on the PRV-9000? The PRV-9000 DVD-Video Recorder records two different video formats. It can record the DVD-Video format onto either DVD-R or DVD-RW media, as per above. And it can also record the VR (Video Recording) format onto DVD-RW media. What is the playback compatibility of the DVD-Video format on DVD-R media? Most DVD players and DVD-ROM drives will play DVD-R media. If the player/drive plays DVD-Video content that has been authored and copied onto DVD-R media then it will play DVD-Video content that has been recorded and finalized onto DVD-R media with the PRV-9000. When addressing playback compatibility there are always two issues to consider: 1) will the device play the video file format of the recorded content and 2) does the device support and play the recordable DVD media format? Both the DVD-Video file format and the DVD-R media format are part of the DVD Forum’s specification. Therefore, 1) Any DVD player or DVD drive/computer system that plays replicated DVD- Video discs will also play the DVD-Video content recorded and finalized on the PRV-9000. 2) Any DVD player or drive that supports and plays DVD-R media will play DVD-R discs recorded and finalized on the PRV-9000. * * DVD-R media is currently compatible with most DVD players and DVD-ROM drives. Pioneer fully expects this number to increase to nearly 100% over the next year. PRV-9000 FAQ 1 of 7 Last Revised: 11/15/01

Anyone familiar with the operation of a VCR can easily operate the PRV-9000, making the creation of compatible DVD-Video discs as quick and easy as recording a videotape. Recordings are made using either write-once DVD-R (G) or re-recordable DVD-RW discs that are compatible with most DVD-Video players and DVD-ROM drives.* In DVD-Video mode, maximum program capacity is either one hour or two hours per disc, and up to 99 separate video segments (titles) can be recorded. The PRV-9000 Pro DVD-Video Recorder can automatically generate a DVD title menu that can be used to access any recorded title on a DVD-R compatible DVD-Video player similar to how movie title are used. Analog and digital A/V inputs allow easy connection to both legacy and current video sources, and outputs include component, Y/C and composite video signals. The unit can also play DVD-Video discs on read-only, DVD-R and DVD-RW media, as well as CD Audio and VideoCD discs on read-only, CD-R and VD-RW media.

PRODUCT INFORMATION BULLETIN PIB # 190001 PRV-9000 –Time Code Support created: JB on 22 Oct 2001 Page 1 of 2 Engineering/Support (310) 952-2000 Pioneer Electronics (USA), Inc OVERVIEW: SMPTE (acronym for Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) adopted two time code standards, Longitudinal Time Code (LTC) and Vertical Internal Time Code (VITC). Both time code formats were created for accurately locating exact positioning points of video and audio. In many professional videotape formats, LTC is recorded in a separate longitudinal audio track. The disadvantage of LTC is when the playback device is in stop, search or scan mode there is no LTC signal present. The time code data contains the hours, minutes, seconds and frame numbers. Because LTC can also be generated and recorded as an audio signal, the Pioneer PRV-9000 can record LTC as a discrete and separate audio signal on one of the two unbalanced audio inputs. To include a time code, verify that the source material includes either LTC or VITC signal. If none is present, record LTC directly from a LTC generator. If the source material contains only a VITC signal, a VITC to LTC translator must be used. For best results, record a sequence in DVD Video mode rather than in VR mode. If the time-coded DVD recording is in Video mode, the disc can be played back in most DVD Video players. Recording LTC As mentioned above, the PRV-9000 uses an audio channel to record the LTC signal, just as an analog audio signal is recorded. Connect the LTC signal to either audio input channel. The remaining audio channel is available for recording a monaural analog audio signal. VTR with Time Code Track When recording from a VTR that contains a time code (LTC) track, impedance matching transformers are required. Connect the VTR’s time code output to one of the PRV-9000’s audio inputs using an impedance matching transformer. If audio is required, connect one of the VTR’s audio channels using an impedance matching transformer to the remaining audio channel on the PRV-9000. VITC When recording from source that contains a VITC, first connect the source video output to the input on the VITC to LTC translator. Two impedance matching transformers may be required with one transformer to convert the source balanced audio signal to an unbalanced input signal for the PRV- 9000. The other transformer connects the VITC and the LTC translator output to the audio input channel of the PRV-9000. The video signal from the source connects to the PRV-9000’s video input, associated with audio input.
