Series LFII Residential Sprinklers 4.9 K-Factor Domed-Plate Concealed Pendent Wet Pipe and Dry Pipe Systems Page 1 of 6 SEPTEMBER 2010 TFP450 Technical Services 800-381-9312 | +1-401-781-8220 www.tyco-fire.com IMPORTANT Always refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP700 for the “INSTALLER WARNING” that provides cautions with respect to handling and installation of sprinkler systems and components. Improper handling and installation can permanently damage a sprinkler system or its components and cause the sprinkler to fail to operate in a fire situation or cause it to operate prematurely. General Description The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Domed-Plate Concealed Pendent 4.9 K-Factor Sprinklers (TY2234) are decorative, fast response, frangible bulb sprinklers de- signed for use in residential occupan- cies such as homes, apartments, dor- mitories, and hotels. The Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly conceals the sprinkler operating components above the ceiling. The domed profile of the cover plate pro- vides aesthetically appealing sprin- kler design with lower flow rates than can be achieved by lower profile cover plates. The separable two-piece de- sign of the Cover Plate and Support Cup Assemblies allows installation of the sprinklers and pressure testing of the fire protection system prior to the installation of the ceiling or application of a finish coating. Also, the separable “push-on and thread-off” two-piece design of the Sprinkler provides for 1/2 inch (12,7 mm ) of vertical adjustment. The Series LFII Residential Sprinklers (TY2234) are intended for use in the fol- lowing scenarios: • wet and dry pipe residential sprinkler systems for one- and two-family dwellings and mobile homes per NFPA 13D • wet and dry pipe residential sprinkler systems for residential occupancies up to and including four stories in height per NFPA 13R • wet and dry pipe sprinkler systems for the residential portions of any oc- cupancy per NFPA 13 Historically residential sprinklers, based on their Listing, have been limited to wet pipe sprinkler systems to assure speed of water delivery for a given prescribed design area (num- ber of design sprinklers). The Series LFII Residential Domed-Plate Con- cealed Pendent Sprinklers (TY2234) Listing now offers the laboratory ap- proved option of designing dry pipe residential sprinkler systems. Through extensive testing, it has been determined that the number of design sprinklers (hydraulic design area) for the Series LFII Residential Domed-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinklers need not be increased over the number of design sprinklers (hydraulic design area) as specified for wet pipe sprin- kler systems, as is customary for den- sity/area sprinkler systems designed per NFPA 13. Consequently, the Series LFII Residential Domed-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinklers offer the features of non-water filled pipe in addition to not having to increase the number of de- sign sprinklers (hydraulic design area) for systems designed to NFPA 13, 13D, or 13R. Non-water filled pipe will permit options for areas sensitive to freezing. These Residential Sprinklers have a 4.9 (70,6) K-Factor that provides the required residential flow rates at re- duced pressures, enabling smaller pipe sizes and water supply requirements. The Series LFII Residential Domed- Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinklers (TY2234) have been designed with heat sensitivity and water distribu- tion characteristics proven to help in the control of residential fires and to improve the chance for occupants to escape or be evacuated. The Series LFII Residential Domed- Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinklers (TY2234) are shipped with a Dispos- able Protective Cap. The Protective Cap is temporarily removed for instal- lation, and it must be replaced to pro- tect the sprinkler while the ceiling is being installed or finished. The tip of the Protective Cap can also be used to mark the center of the ceiling hole into plaster board or ceiling tiles by gently pushing the ceiling product against the Protective Cap. When ceiling install- ation is complete, the Protective Cap must be removed and the Cover Plate Assembly installed. The Protective Cap must be removed to ensure proper performance of the sprinklers. NOTICE The Series LFII Residential Domed- Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinklers (TY2234) described herein must be installed and maintained in compli- ance with this document and the ap- plicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addition to the standards of any authorities hav- ing jurisdiction. Failure to do so may im- pair the performance of these devices. Owners are responsible for maintaining their fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition. The in- stalling contractor or sprinkler manu- facturer should be contacted with any questions. TFP450 Page 2 of 6 Maximum Coverage Area(a) Ft. x Ft. (m x m) Maximum Spacing Ft. The glass bulb contains a fluid that ex- pands when exposed to heat. When the rated temperature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass bulb allowing the sprinkler to activate and flow water. Design Criteria The RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Domed-Plate Concealed Pendent 4.9 K-Factor Sprinklers (TY2234) are UL and C-UL Listed for installation in accordance with the fol- lowing criteria. Note: When conditions exist that are outside the scope of the provided cri- teria, refer to the Residential Sprinkler Design Guide TFP490 for the manu- facturer's recommendations that may be acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction. System Types Per the UL Listing, wet pipe and dry pipe systems may be utilized. Per the C-UL Listing, only wet pipe systems may be utilized. For dry systems, corrosion-resistant or internally galvanized pipe shall be uti- lized with the sprinklers described in this data sheet. For dry systems not using CPVC, pen- dent sprinklers shall be installed on re- turn bends, where the sprinklers, return bends, and branch line piping (that is, potential areas for trapped water) are in areas at or above 40°F (4°C). Refer to technical data sheet TFP485 about the use of Residential Sprinklers in residential dry pipe systems. NOTICE When corrosion-resistant or internally galvanized pipe and fittings with a po- table water supply is utilized, return bends need not be installed. However, any portion of the piping that has the potential to trap water must be main- tained at or above 40°F (4°C) unless provision to drain such areas is provid- ed and maintained dry. Water Delivery When using the Series LFII Residential Pendent Sprinklers (TY2234) in dry pipe sprinkler systems, the require- ments for “Dry System Water Delivery” per Section 8.3.4.3 of the 2010 edition of NFPA 13D apply. For a residential hazard, in no case shall the time of wa- ter delivery exceed 15 seconds for the most remote operating sprinkler. Hydraulic Design (NFPA 13D and 13R) The minimum required sprinkler flow rate for systems designed to NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R are given in Tables A and B as a function of temperature rating and the maximum allowable coverage areas. The sprinkler flow rate is the min- imum required discharge from each of the total number of “design sprinklers” as specified in NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R. NOTICE The number of “design sprinklers” specified in NFPA 13D and 13R for wet pipe systems is to be applied when de- signing dry pipe systems. There is no need to increase the design area, as is the case for density/area systems, in accordance with U.S. Patent 7,712,543. Hydraulic Design (NFPA 13) For systems designed to NFPA 13, the number of design sprinklers is to be the four most hydraulically demanding sprinklers. The minimum required dis- charge from each of the four sprinklers is to be the greater of the following: • The flow rates given in Tables A and B for NFPA 13D and 13R as a func- tion of temperature rating and the maximum allowable coverage area. • A minimum discharge of 0.1 GPM/ sq. ft. over the “design area” com- prised of the four most hydraulically demanding sprinklers for the actual coverage areas being protected by the four sprinklers. NOTICE The number of “design sprinklers” specified in NFPA 13D and 13R for wet pipe systems is to be applied when de- signing dry pipe systems. There is no need to increase the design area, as is the case for density/area systems, in accordance with U.S. Patent 7,712,543. The Series LFII Residential Domed-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinklers must not be used in applications where the air pressure above the ceiling is greater than that below. Down drafts through the Support Cup could delay sprinkler operation in a fire situation. Obstruction To Water Distribution Sprinklers are to be located in ac- cordance with the obstruction rules defined by NFPA 13 for residential sprinklers. Operational Sensitivity The sprinklers are to be installed rela- tive to the ceiling mounting surface as shown in Figure 2. TFP450 Page 4 of 6 Sprinkler Spacing The minimum spacing between sprinklers is 8 feet (2,4 m). The maxi- mum spacing between sprin- klers cannot exceed the length of the coverage area (Table A) being hydraulically calculated; maxi- mum 12 feet for a 12 ft. x 12 ft. cover- age area, or 20 feet for a 20 ft. x 20 ft. coverage area). Installation The RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Domed-Plate Concealed Pendent 4.9 K-Factor Sprinklers (TY2234) must be installed in accor- dance with the following instructions: NOTICE Do not install any bulb type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. With the sprin- kler held horizontally, a small air bubble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch (1,6 mm). Obtain a leak-tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler joint by applying a minimum- to-maximum torque of 7 to 14 ft. lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). Higher levels of torque can distort the sprinkler Inlet with con- sequent leakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not attempt to compensate for in- sufficient adjustment in an Escutcheon Plate by under- or over-tightening the Sprinkler. Re-adjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. 1. Install the pendent sprinkler in only the pendent position with the cen- terline of the sprinkler perpendicu- lar to the mounting surface. 2. Remove the Protective Cap. NOTICE Do not remove the Sprinkler Strap (Figure 1) until the sprinkler system is to be placed in service. 3. With pipe-thread sealant applied to the pipe threads, and using the W-Type 7 Wrench shown in Figure 2, install and tighten the Sprinkler/ Support Cup Assembly into the fit- ting. The W-Type 7 Wrench will ac- cept a 1/2 inch ratchet drive. 4. Replace the Protective Cap by push- ing it upwards until it bottoms out against the Support Cup. The Protective Cap helps prevent dam- age to the Deflector and Arms dur- ing ceiling installation and/or during application of the finish coating of the ceiling. It may also be used to locate the center of the clearance hole by gently pushing the ceiling material against the center point of the Cap. NOTICE As long as the Sprinkler Strap (Fig- ure 1) or the Protective Cap (Figure 3) remains in place, the system is considered to be “Out Of Service”. 5. After the ceiling has been com- pleted with the 2-1/2 inch (63 mm) diameter clearance hole and in preparation for installing the Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly, remove and discard the Protective Cap and the Sprinkler Strap. Note: Refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP700 regarding instructions for the removal of the Sprinkler Strap. 6. Push the Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly into the Support Cup, and as necessary, make the final adjust- ment of the Cover Plate with respect to the ceiling by turning the Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly clockwise until its flange just comes in contact with the ceiling. If it becomes necessary to remove the Cover Plate, it can be removed by unscrewing in a counter-clockwise direction. If the Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly cannot be engaged with the Support Cup or the Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly cannot be engaged suf- ficiently to contact the ceiling, the Sprinkler Fitting must be repositioned. Care and Maintenance The RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Domed-Plate Concealed Pendent 4.9 K-Factor Sprinklers (TY2234) must be maintained and ser- viced in accordance with the following instructions: NOTICE Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system that it controls, obtain permission to shut down the affected fire protection sys- tems from the proper authorities and notify all personnel who may be affect- ed by this action. Absence of the outer piece of an es- cutcheon, which is used to cover a clearance hole, can delay sprinkler op- eration in a fire situation. Owners must assure that the sprinklers are not used for hanging of any objects and that the sprinklers are only cleaned by means of gently dusting with a feath- er duster; otherwise, non-operation in the event of a fire or inadvertent opera- tion may result. Exercise care to avoid damage to sprin- klers before, during, and after installa- tion. Never paint, plate, coat, or oth- erwise alter automatic sprinklers after they leave the factory. Replace sprinklers that: • were modified or over-heated. • were damaged by dropping, striking, wrench twisting, wrench slippage, or the like. • are leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion. • were exposed to corrosive products of combustion but have not operated, if you cannot easily remove combus- tion by-products with a cloth. • have a cracked Bulb or have lost liquid from the Bulb. Refer to the Installation section in this data sheet. For the Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly, the following items apply: • When properly installed, a nominal 3/32 inch (2,4 mm) air gap exists between the lip of the Cover and the ceiling, as shown in Figure 3. This air gap is necessary for proper sprinkler operation. The air gap al- lows heat flow from a fire to pass below and above the Cover, helping to assure appropriate release of the Cover in a fire situation. If repaint- ing the ceiling after installation is re- quired, exercise care to ensure that new paint does not seal off any of the air gap. • Do not pull the Cover relative to the Retainer. Separation may result. • Never repaint factory-painted Cov- ers. When necessary, replace Cov- ers with factory-painted units. Responsibility lies with the owner for the in spection, testing, and mainte- nance of their fire protection system and devices in compliance with this document, as well as with the appli- cable standards of the National Fire Protec tion Association (for example, NFPA 25), in addition to the standards of any authorities having jurisdiction. Contact the installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer regarding any questions. Automatic sprinkler systems are recom- mended to be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspection Service in accordance with local re- quirements and/or national codes.

Improper handling and installation can permanently damage a sprinkler system or its compo- nents and cause the sprinkler to fail to operate in a fire situation or cause it to operate prematurely. Worldwide Contacts www.tyco-fire.com General Description The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII (TY3334) Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers are decorative, fast response, frangible bulb sprin- klers designed for use in residential occupancies such as homes, apart- ments, dormitories, and hotels. When enhanced flow characteristics for resi- dential portions of any occupancy per NFPA 13 is the major consideration, the Series LFII (TY3334) should be the first choice. When higher flow demands are required for residential sprinklers used in an NFPA 13 design, the large 5.6 K-factor of the Series LFII (TY3334) is an attractive choice. Although mostly intended where residential sprinklers are to be used in an NFPA 13 design, the Series LFII (TY3334) can also be used in wet pipe residential sprin- kler systems for one- and two-family dwellings and mobile homes per NFPA 13D, and wet pipe residential sprinkler systems for residential occupancies up to and including four stories in height per NFPA 13R. The recessed version of the Series LFII (TY3334) is intended for use in areas with finished walls. It employs a two-piece Style 20 Recessed Escutcheon. The Recessed Escutch- eon provides 1/4 inch (6,4 mm) of recessed adjustment or up to 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of total adjustment from the flush mounting surface position. The adjustment provided by the Recessed Escutcheon reduces the accuracy to which the pipe nipples to the sprinklers must be cut. The Series LFII (TY3334) has been designed with heat sensitivity and water distribution characteristics proven to help in the control of residen- tial fires and to improve the chance for occupants to escape or be evacuated. NOTICE The Series LFII (TY3334) Residen- tial Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document and with the applica- ble standards of the National Fire Pro- tection Association, in addition to the standards of any authorities having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition. Design Criteria The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII (TY3334) Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers are UL and C-UL Listed for installation in accordance with this section. Residential Sprinkler Design Guide When conditions exist that are outside the scope of the provided criteria, refer to the Residential Sprinkler Design Guide TFP490 for the manufactur- er’s recommendations that may be acceptable to the local authority having jurisdiction. System Type Only wet pipe systems may be utilized. Ceiling Type Smooth flat horizontal, or beamed, or sloped, in accordance with the 2013 Edition of NFPA 13D, 13R, or 13 as applicable. Hydraulic Design (NFPA 13D and 13R) For systems designed to NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R, the minimum required sprin- kler flow rate are given in Table A as a function of temperature rating and the maximum allowable coverage areas. The sprinkler flow rate is the minimum required discharge from each of the total number of “design sprinklers” as specified in NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R. Hydraulic Design (NFPA 13) For systems designed to NFPA 13, the number of design sprinklers is to be the four most hydraulically demanding sprinklers. The minimum required dis- charge from each of the four sprinklers is to be the greater of the following: • The flow rates given in Table A as a function of temperature rating and the maximum allowable coverage area. • A minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ft2 over the “design area” com- prised of the four most hydraulically demanding sprinklers for the actual coverage areas being protected by the four sprinklers. Obstruction To Water Distribution Sprinklers are to be located in accor- dance with the obstruction rules of NFPA 13D, 13R, and 13 as applica- ble for residential sprinklers as well as with the obstruction criteria described within the TYCO Technical Data Sheet TFP490. Operational Sensitivity The sprinklers are to be installed with an end-of deflector-boss to wall dis- tance of 1-1/4 to 6 inches. In addition the top-of-deflector-to-ceil- ing distance is to be within the range (Table A) being hydraulically calculated. Sprinkler Spacing The minimum spacing between sprin- klers is 8 feet (2,4 m) when installed with a top-of-deflector-to-ceiling dis- tance of 4 to 6 inches (100 to 150 mm). The minimum spacing between sprinklers is 9 feet (2,7 m) when installed with a top-of-deflector-to- ceiling distance of 6 to 12 inches (150 to 300 mm). The maximum spacing between sprinklers cannot exceed the width of the coverage area (Ref. Table A) being hydraulically calcu- lated (e.g., maximum 12 feet for a 12 ft. x 12 ft. coverage area, or 16 feet for a 16 ft. x 20 ft. coverage area). Installation The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII (TY3334) Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinkler must be installed in accordance with this section. General Instructions Do not install any bulb-type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. With the sprin- kler held horizontally, a small air bubble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch (1,6 mm). A leak-tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained by applying a minimum to maximum torque of 7 to 14 ft.-lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). Higher levels of torque can distort the sprinkler Inlet with consequent leakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not attempt to compensate for insufficient adjustment in the Sprinkler by under- or over-tightening the sprin- kler. Re-adjust the position of the sprin- kler fitting to suit. Series LFII Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers The Series LFII Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers must be installed in accor- dance with the following instructions. Step 1. Horizontal sidewall sprinklers are to be installed in the horizontal position with their centerline of water- way perpendicular to the back wall and parallel to the ceiling. The word “TOP” on the Deflector is to face towards the ceiling with the front edge of the Deflector parallel to the ceiling. Step 2. With pipe thread sealant applied to the pipe threads, hand tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. Step 3. Tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting using only the W-Type 6 Sprinkler Wrench (Figure 3). With ref- erence to Figure 1, the W-Type 6 Sprin- kler Wrench is to be applied to the wrench flats. Series LFII Recessed Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers The Series LFII Recessed Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers must be installed in accordance with the following instructions. Step A. Recessed horizontal sidewall sprinklers are to be installed in the hor- izontal position with their centerline of waterway perpendicular to the back wall and parallel to the ceiling. The word “TOP” on the Deflector is to face towards the ceiling. Step B. After installing the Style 20 Mounting Plate over the sprinkler threads and with pipe thread seal- ant applied to the pipe threads, hand tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. Step C. Tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting using only the W-Type 7 Recessed Sprinkler Wrench (Ref. Fig- ure 4). With reference to Figure 1, the W-Type 7 Recessed Sprinkler Wrench is to be applied to the sprinkler wrench flats. Step D. RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Sprinklers 4.2 K-factor Horizontal Sidewall Wet Pipe and Dry Pipe Systems Page 1 of 6 JANUARY 2016 TFP410 IMPORTANT Always refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP700 for the “INSTALLER WARNING” that provides cautions with respect to handling and instal- lation of sprinkler systems and com- ponents. Improper handling and installation can permanently damage a sprinkler system or its compo- nents and cause the sprinkler to fail to operate in a fire situation or cause it to operate prematurely. Worldwide Contacts www.tyco-fire.com General Description The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers (TY1334) are decorative, fast response, frangible bulb sprinklers designed for use in residential occu- pancies such as homes, apartments, dormitories, and hotels. When aesthet- ics and optimized flow characteristics are the major consideration, the Series LFII Residential Sidewall Sprinklers (TY1334) should be the first choice. The Series LFII Residential Sprinklers are intended for use in the following scenarios: • wet and dry pipe residential sprin- kler systems for one- and two-fam- ily dwellings and mobile homes per NFPA 13D • wet and dry pipe residential sprinkler systems for residential occupancies up to and including four stories in height per NFPA 13R • wet and dry pipe sprinkler systems for the residential portions of any occupancy per NFPA 13 The recessed version of the Series LFII Residential Sprinklers is intended for use in areas with finished walls. It employs a two-piece Style 20 Recessed Escutcheon. The Recessed Escutcheon provides 1/4 inch (6,4 mm) of recessed adjustment or up to 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of total adjustment from the flush mounting surface posi- tion. The adjustment provided by the Recessed Escutcheon reduces the accuracy to which the pipe nipples to the sprinklers must be cut. The Series LFII Residential Sprinklers have been designed with heat sensitiv- ity and water distribution characteristics proven to help in the control of residen- tial fires and to improve the chance for occupants to escape or be evacuated. Dry Pipe System Application The Series LFII Residential Horizon- tal and Recessed Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers offers a laboratory approved option for designing dry pipe residen- tial sprinkler systems, whereas, most residential sprinklers are laboratory approved for wet systems only. Through extensive testing, it has been determined that the number of design sprinklers (hydraulic design area) for the Series LFII Residential Horizon- tal Sidewall Sprinklers (TY1334) need not be increased over the number of design sprinklers (hydraulic design area) as specified for wet pipe sprinkler systems, as is accustomed for density/ area sprinkler systems designed per NFPA 13. Consequently, the Series LFII Resi- dential Sprinklers offer the features of non-water filled pipe in addition to not having to increase the number of design sprinklers (hydraulic design area) for systems designed to NFPA 13, 13D, or 13R. Non-water filled pipe will permit options for areas sensitive to freezing. NOTICE The Series LFII Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document and the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addi- tion to the standards of any authori- ties having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted with any questions. When the rated temperature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass bulb, allowing the sprinkler to activate and flow water. Design Criteria The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Horizontal and Recessed Horizontal Sidewall Sprin- klers (TY1334) are UL and C-UL Listed for installation in accordance with the following criteria. Residential Sprinkler Design Guide When conditions exist that are outside the scope of the provided criteria, refer to the Residential Sprinkler Design Guide TFP490 for the manufactur- er’s recommendations that may be acceptable to the local authority having jurisdiction. System Types Per the UL Listing, wet pipe and dry pipe systems may be utilized. Per the C-UL Listing, only wet pipe systems may be utilized. Refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP485 about the use of Residential Sprinklers in residential dry pipe systems. Ceiling Types Smooth flat horizontal, or beamed, or sloped, in accordance with the 2013 Edition of NFPA 13D, 13R, or 13 as applicable. Hydraulic Design (NFPA 13D and 13R) For systems designed to NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R, the minimum required sprinkler flow rates are given in Tables A and B as a function of temperature rating and the maximum allowable cov- erage areas. The sprinkler flow rate is the minimum required discharge from each of the total number of “design sprinklers” as specified in NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R. The number of “design sprinklers” specified in NFPA 13D and 13R for wet pipe systems is to be applied when designing dry pipe systems. Hydraulic Design (NFPA 13) For systems designed to NFPA 13, the number of design sprinklers is to be the four most hydraulically demanding sprinklers. The minimum required dis- charge from each of the four sprinklers is to be the greater of the following: • The flow rates given in Tables A and B as a function of temperature rating and the maximum allowable coverage area • A minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ ft2 over the “design area” comprised of the four most hydraulically demanding sprinklers for actual coverage areas protected by the four sprinklers The number of “design sprinklers” specified in NFPA 13 for wet pipe systems is to be applied when designing dry pipe systems. Dry Pipe System Water Delivery When using the Series LFII Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers (TY1334) in dry pipe sprinkler systems, the time for water delivery must not exceed 15 seconds for the most remote operating sprinkler. Operational Sensitivity The sprinklers are to be installed with an end-of-deflector-boss to wall distance of 1-1/4 to 6 inches. In addition the top-of-deflector-to-ceil- ing distance is to be within the range (Tables A and B) being hydraulically calculated. Sprinkler Spacing The minimum spacing between sprin- klers is 8 feet (2,4 m). The maximum spacing between sprinklers cannot exceed the width of the coverage area (Tables A and B) being hydraulically calculated (e.g., maximum 12 feet for a 12 ft. x 12 ft. coverage area, or 16 feet for a 16 ft. x 20 ft. coverage area.). Installation The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Horizontal and Recessed Horizontal Sidewall Sprin- klers (TY1334) must be installed in accordance with this section. General Instructions Do not install any bulb type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. With the sprin- kler held horizontally, a small air bubble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch (1,6 mm). A leak-tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained by applying a minimum to maximum torque of 7 to 14 ft. lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). Higher levels of torque can distort the sprinkler Inlet with consequent leakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not attempt to compensate for insufficient adjustment in an Escutch- eon Plate by under- or over-tightening the Sprinkler. Re-adjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. Series LFII Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers The Series LFII Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers must be installed in accordance with the following instructions. Step 1. Install horizontal sidewall sprin- klers in the horizontal position with their centerline of waterway perpendicular to the backwall and parallel to the ceiling. The word “TOP” on the Deflector is to face towards the ceiling with the front edge of the Deflector parallel to the ceiling. Step 2. With pipe-thread sealant applied to the pipe threads, hand tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. Step 3. Tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting using only the W-Type 6 Sprinkler Wrench (Figure 3). With ref- erence to Figure 1, apply the W-Type 6 Sprinkler Wrench to the wrench flats. Series LFII Residential Recessed Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers The Series LFII Residential Recessed Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers must be installed in accordance with the follow- ing instructions. Step A. Install recessed horizontal sidewall sprinklers in the horizontal position with their centerline of water- way perpendicular to the backwall and parallel to the ceiling. The word “TOP” on the Deflector is to face towards the ceiling. Step B. After installing the Style 20 Mounting Plate over the sprinkler threads and with pipe-thread sealant applied to the pipe threads, hand- tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. Step C. Tighten the sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting using only the W-Type 7 Recessed Sprinkler Wrench (Figure 4). With reference to Figure 1, apply the W-Type 7 Recessed Sprinkler Wrench to the sprinkler wrench flats. Step D. After the ceiling has been installed or the finish coat has been applied, slide on the Style 20 Closure over the Series LFII Residential Sprin- kler and push the Closure over the Mounting Plate until its flange comes in contact with the wall. TFP410 Page 4 of 6 Care and Maintenance The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Horizontal and Recessed Horizontal Sidewall Sprin- klers (TY1334) must be maintained and serviced in accordance with this section. Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system that it controls, obtain permission to shut down the affected fire protection systems from the proper authorities and notify all personnel who may be affected by this action. Absence of the outer piece of an escutcheon, which is used to cover a clearance hole, can delay sprinkler operation in a fire situation. The owner must assure that the sprin- klers are not used for hanging any objects and that the sprinklers are only cleaned by means of gently dusting with a feather duster; otherwise, non- operation in the event of a fire or inad- vertent operation may result. Sprinklers which are found to be leaking or exhibiting visible signs of corrosion must be replaced. Automatic sprinklers must never be painted, plated, coated, or other- wise altered after leaving the factory. Modified sprinklers must be replaced. Sprinklers that have been exposed to corrosive products of combustion, but have not operated, should be replaced if they cannot be completely cleaned by wiping the sprinkler with a cloth or by brushing it with a soft bristle brush. Care must be exercised to avoid damage to the sprinklers - before, during, and after installation. Sprin- klers damaged by dropping, striking, wrench twist/slippage, or the like, must be replaced. Also, replace any sprin- kler that has a cracked bulb or that has lost liquid from its bulb. (Ref. Installa- tion Section.) The owner is responsible for the inspection, testing, and maintenance of their fire protection system and devices in compliance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association (e.g., NFPA 25), in addition to the stan- dards of any authorities having jurisdic- tion. Contact the installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer regarding any questions. Automatic sprinkler systems are rec- ommended to be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspec- tion Service in accordance with local requirements and/or national codes. Max. Sprinkler Identification Number (SIN) TY2335 Technical Data Approvals UL Listed Certified to all requirements of NSF/ANSI 61 (Refer to the Design Criteria section for details on these approvals.) Maximum Working Pressure 175 psi (12,1 bar) General Description The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Dry Type Residential Horizontal Sidewall (HSW) Sprinklers (TY2335) are dry-type decorative, fast response, frangible bulb sprinklers designed for use in residential occupancies such as homes, apartments, dormitories, and hotels. The Series LFII Dry Type Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers are typ- ically used where sprinklers and/or a portion of the connecting piping are exposed to freezing temperatures (e.g., horizontal sprinkler supplied from wet systems into unheated areas). The Series LFII Dry Type Residen- tial Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers are intended for use in Residential Sprin- kler systems for one- and two-family dwellings and mobile homes per NFPA 13D; residential sprinkler systems for residential occupancies up to and including four stories in height per NFPA 13R; or, sprinkler systems for the residential portions of any occupancy per NFPA 13. The recessed version is intended for use in areas with finished walls. It employs a two-piece Style 20 Recessed Escutcheon. The Recessed Escutcheon provides 1/4 inch (6,4 mm) of recessed adjustment or up to 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of total adjustment from the flush mounting surface position. The design of this escutcheon provides a level of flexibility in adjusting sprinkler supply connections. The minimum required dis- charge from each of the four sprinklers is the greater of the following: • flow rates listed in Table A as a function of temperature rating and the maximum allowable coverage area. • minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ft² over the design area comprised of the four most hydraulically demanding sprinklers for the actual coverage areas protected by four sprinklers. Obstruction to Water Distribution Sprinklers are to be located in accor- dance with the obstruction rules of NFPA 13D, 13R, and 13 as applicable for residential sprinklers as well as with the obstruction criteria described within the Technical Data Sheet TFP490. Operational Sensitivity The sprinkler must be located relative to the mounting surface as shown in Figures 2 and 3. Sprinkler Spacing The minimum lateral spacing between sprinklers is 8 feet (2,4 m). The maximum lateral spacing between sprinklers cannot exceed the length of the cov- erage area (refer to Table A) hydrauli- cally calculated (e.g., a maximum of 12 feet for a 12 ft. x 12 ft. coverage area or 18 feet for a 18 ft. x 20 ft. coverage area). Sprinkler Fittings The following fittings may be used: • the 1 inch NPT outlet or run of a malleable or ductile iron threaded tee fittings that meet the dimen- sional requirements of ANSI B16.3 (Class 150) • the 1 inch NPT outlet or run of a cast iron threaded tee fitting that meet the dimensional requirements of ANSI B16.4 (Class 125) Do not install the Series LFII Dry Type Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprin- klers into elbow fittings. The Inlet of the sprinkler can contact the interior of the elbow, potentially damaging the Inlet seal. Only use the configuration in Figure 4 where the sprinkler fitting and water- filled pipe at the sprinkler fitting are not subject to freezing and where the length of the Series LFII Sprinkler has the minimum exposure length per Figure 5. Refer to the Exposure Length section and Table B. • the 1 inch NPT outlet of a GRINNELL Figure 730 Mechanical Tee in wet pipe systems only • the 1 inch NPT CPVC outlet of a 1” x 1” x 1” NPT Sprinkler Head Adapter Tee (P/N 80249) in wet systems only • the 1 inch NPT CPVC outlet of a 1” x 1” NPT Female Adapter (P/N 80145) in wet systems only • the 1 inch NPT outlet of a 1” x 1” x 1” NPT CPVC Sprinkler Head Adapter Tee (P/N 80259) in wet pipe systems only NOTICE Do not install the Series LFII Dry Type Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprin- klers into any other type fitting without first consulting the Tyco Fire Protection Products (TFPP) Technical Services. Failure to use the appropriate fitting may result in the following: • failure of the sprinkler to operate properly due to formation of ice over the Inlet Plug or binding of the Inlet Plug. • insufficient engagement of the in- let pipe threads with consequent leakage. Exposure Length When using Series LFII Dry Type Resi- dential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers in wet pipe sprinkler systems to protect areas subject to freezing temperatures, use Table B to determine the appro- Operation When the TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Dry Type Residential Hori- zontal Sidewall Sprinkler is in service, water is prevented from entering the assembly by the Plug with Sealing Assembly (Ref. Figure 1) in the Inlet of the Sprinkler. The glass Bulb contains a fluid that expands when exposed to heat. When the rated temperature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass Bulb to release the Bulb Seat. The system’s water pressure is then able to unseat the Plug with Sealing Assem- bly. The Plug Spring turns the Plug with Sealing Assembly aside, allowing the sprinkler to activate and flow water. Design Criteria The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Dry Type Residential Horizon- tal Sidewall Sprinklers (TY2335) are UL Listed for installation in accordance with this section. Residential Sprinkler Design Guide When conditions exist that are outside the scope of the criteria provided in this section, refer to the technical data sheet entitled Residential Sprinkler Design Guide (TFP490) for the manu- facturer’s recommendations that may be acceptable to the local authority having jurisdiction. System Type Wet Pipe Hydraulic Design (NFPA 13D and 13R) For systems designed to NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R, the minimum required sprin- kler flow rates are given in Table A as a function of temperature rating and the maximum allowable coverage areas. The sprinkler flow rate is the minimum required discharge from each of the total number of “design sprinklers,” as specified in NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R. The exposed barrel length measure- ment must be taken from the face of the sprinkler fitting to the surface of the structure or insulation that is exposed to the heated area. Refer to Figure 5 for an example. Clearance Space When connecting an area subject to freezing and an area containing a wet-pipe sprinkler system, the clear- ance space around the sprinkler barrel of Dry Type Residential Sprinklers must be sealed, in accordance with the National Fire Protection Associa- tion. Due to temperature differences between the two areas, the potential for the formation of condensation in the sprinkler and subsequent ice build- up is increased. If this condensation is not controlled, ice build-up can occur that might damage the dry type sprin- kler and/or prevent proper operation in a fire situation. Use of the Model DSB-2 Dry Sprin- kler Boot, described in Technical Data Sheet TFP591 and shown in Figures 4 and 5, can provide the recommended seal. Notes: a. For coverage area dimensions less than or between those indicated, use the minimum required flow for the next highest coverage area for which hydraulic design criteria are stated. b. This dimension refers to the Width (backwall where the sprinkler is located) times the Length (horizontal throw of the sprinkler). c. The requirement is based on minimum flow in gpm (lpm) from each sprinkler. The associated residual pressures are calculated using the nominal K-factor. Refer to Hydraulic Design under the Design Criteria section for details. d. For NFPA 13 residential applications, the greater of 0.1 gpm/ft² over the design area or the flow in accordance with the criteria in this table must be used. e. Title RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Sprin- klers 6.9 K-factor, Pendent/Recessed Pendent/Con- cealed, NFPA 13 Optimized Wet Pipe Systems Page 1 of 8 JANUARY 2016 TFP408 IMPORTANT Always refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP700 for the “INSTALLER WARNING” that provides cautions with respect to handling and instal- lation of sprinkler systems and com- ponents. Improper handling and installation can permanently damage a sprinkler system or its compo- nents and cause the sprinkler to fail to operate in a fire situation or cause it to operate prematurely. Worldwide Contacts www.tyco-fire.com General Description The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Pendent, Recessed Pendent, and Concealed Pendent Sprinklers (TY4234) are decorative, fast response, frangible bulb sprin- klers designed for use in residential occupancies such as homes, apart- ments, dormitories, and hotels. When enhanced flow characteristics for resi- dential portions of any occupancy per NFPA 13 is the major consideration, the Series LFII (TY4234) should be the first choice. When higher flow demands are required for residential sprinklers used in an NFPA 13 design, the large 6.9 K-factor of the Series LFII (TY4234) is an attractive choice. Although mostly intended where residential sprinklers are to be used in an NFPA 13 design, the Series LFII (TY4234) can also be used in wet pipe residential sprin- kler systems for one- and two-family dwellings and mobile homes per NFPA 13D, and wet pipe residential sprinkler systems for residential occupancies up to and including four stories in height per NFPA 13R. The recessed version of the sprinkler is intended for use in areas with fin- ished ceilings. It employs a two-piece Style 30 Recessed Escutcheon. The Recessed Escutcheon provides 1/4 inch (6,4 mm) of recessed adjustment or up to 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of total adjustment from the flush mounting surface position. The adjustment pro- vided by the Recessed Escutcheon or Concealed Cover Plate provides a measure of flexibility with regard to which the length of fixed pipe drops to the sprinklers must be cut. The concealed version utilizes a cover plate assembly that conceals the sprin- kler operating components above the ceiling. The separable two-piece design of the Cover Plate and Support Cup Assemblies allows installation of the sprinklers and pressure testing of the fire protection system prior to the installation of the ceiling or application of a finish coating. Also, the separable “push-on and thread-off” two-piece design of the concealed version provides for 1/2 inch (12,7 mm ) of vertical adjustment. The Series LFII Residential Pendent, Recessed Pendent, and Concealed Pendent Sprinklers have been designed with heat sensitivity and water distri- bution characteristics proven to help in the control of residential fires and to improve the chance for occupants to escape or be evacuated. The Series LFII Residential Concealed Pendent Sprinklers (TY4234) are shipped with a Disposable Protective Cap. The Protective Cap is temporar- ily removed for installation, and it must be replaced to protect the sprinkler while the ceiling is being installed or finished. The tip of the Protective Cap can also be used to mark the center of the ceiling hole into plaster board, ceiling tiles, etc. by gently pushing the ceiling product against the Protec- tive Cap. When ceiling installation is complete, the Protective Cap must be removed and the Cover Plate Assembly installed. The Protective Cap must be removed to ensure proper performance of the sprinklers. NOTICE The Series LFII (TY4234) Residential Pendent, Recessed Pendent, and Concealed Pendent Sprinklers described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document and with the applica- ble standards of the National Fire Pro- tection Association, in addition to the standards of any authorities having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted with any questions. When the rated temperature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass bulb allowing the sprinkler to activate and flow water. For the concealed pendent sprinkler, the cover plate which is soldered to the support cup at three places, first falls away when exposed to heat from a fire. The sprinkler then operates similar to pendent and recessed pendent sprin- klers described above. The Cover Plate/Retainer Assembly con- ceals the sprinkler operating compo- nents above the ceiling. The flat profile of the Cover Plate provides the optimum aesthetically appealing sprinkler design. Additionally, the concealed design of the Series LFII Residential Flat-Plate Con- cealed Pendent Sprinklers provides 1/2 inch (12,8 mm) vertical adjustment. This adjustment provides a measure of flex- ibility when cutting fixed pipe drops. The Series LFII Residential Flat-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinklers are in- tended for use in the following systems: • per NFPA 13D, wet pipe residential sprinkler systems for one- and two- family dwellings and mobile homes; • per NFPA 13R, wet pipe residential sprinkler systems for residential oc- cupancies up to and including four stories in height; and • per NFPA 13, wet pipe sprinkler sys- tems for the residential portions of any occupancy. The Series LFII Residential Flat-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinkler has a 4.9 (60,5) K-factor that provides the required residential flow rates at reduced pres- sures, enabling smaller pipe sizes and water supply requirements. This sprinkler has been designed with heat sensitivity and water distribution characteristics proven to help in the con- trol of residential fires and to improve the chance for occupants to escape or be evacuated. The Series LFII Residential Flat-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinklers are shipped with a Disposable Protective Cap. The Protective Cap protects the sprinkler during ceiling installation or finish. At this point, the Deflector, sup- ported by the Guide Pins, drops down to its operated position. The Solder Link Element of the Sprinkler/ Support Cup Assembly is comprised of two link halves that are soldered togeth- er with a thin layer of solder. When the rated temperature is reached, the sol- der melts and the two link halves sepa- rate, allowing the sprinkler to activate and flow water. 1 Registered trademark of Dupont Design Criteria The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Flat-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinklers (TY2524) are UL and C-UL Listed for installation in ac- cordance with the following criteria. NOTICE When conditions exist that are outside the scope of the provided criteria, re- fer to the Residential Sprinkler Design Guide TFP490 for the manufacturer's recommendations that may be accept- able to the Authority Having Jurisdiction. The Series LFII Residential Flat-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinklers must not be used in applications where the air pressure above the ceiling is greater than that below. Down drafts through the Support Cup can delay sprinkler op- eration in a fire situation. System Type Only wet pipe systems may be utilized. Hydraulic Design Table A provides the minimum required sprinkler flow rate for systems designed to NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R as a function of temperature rating and the maximum allowable coverage areas. The sprinkler flow rate is the minimum required dis- charge from each of the total number of “design sprinklers” as specified in NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R. For systems designed to NFPA 13, the number of design sprinklers is to be the four most hydraulically demanding sprinklers. The minimum required dis- charge from each of the four sprinklers is to be the greater of the following: • flow rates given in Table A for NFPA 13D and 13R as a function of tem- perature rating and the maximum al- lowable coverage area • minimum discharge of 0.1 GPM/ sq. ft. over the “design area” com- prised of the four most hydraulically demanding sprinklers for actual cov- erage areas protected by the four sprinklers Obstruction To Water Distribution Locate sprinklers in accordance with the obstruction rules of NFPA for residential sprinklers as well as obstruction criteria described within TYCO technical data sheet TFP490. Operational Sensitivity Install sprinklers relative to the ceiling mounting surface as shown in Figure 3. Sprinkler Spacing The minimum spacing between sprin- klers is 8 feet (2,4 m). The maximum spacing between sprin- klers cannot exceed the length of the coverage area (Table A) being hydrau- lically calculated; for example, a maxi- mum of 12 feet for a 12 ft. x 12 ft. cov- erage area or 20 feet for a 20 ft. x 20 ft. coverage area. (a) For coverage area dimensions less than or between those indicated, use the minimum required flow for the next highest coverage area for which Hydraulic Design section under the Design Criteria are stated. (b) The Minimum Flow requirement is based on minimum flow in GPM (LPM) from each sprinkler. The associated residual pressures are calculated using the nominal K-factor. Refer to “Hydraulic Design” in the Design Criteria section for details. Removing the Protec- tive Cap is required for proper sprinkler performance. Dry Pipe System Application The Series LFII Residential Flat-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinkler offers a laboratory approved option for design- ing dry pipe residential sprinkler sys- tems, whereas, most residential sprin- klers are laboratory approved for wet systems only. Through extensive testing and as ref- erenced in U.S. Patent 7,712,543, it has been determined that the number of de- sign sprinklers (hydraulic design area) for the Series LFII Residential Flat-Plate Concealed Sprinklers (TY2524) need not be increased over the number of design sprinklers (hydraulic design area) speci- fi ed for wet pipe sprinkler systems, as is customary for density/area sprinkler systems designed per NFPA 13, 13D, or 13R. Consequently, the Series LFII Residen- tial Flat-Plate Concealed Sprinklers (TY2524) offer the features of non-wa- ter fi lled pipe in addition to not having to increase the number of design sprinklers (hydraulic design area) for systems de- signed to NFPA 13, 13D, or 13R. Non- water fi lled pipe will permit options for areas sensitive to freezing. NOTICE The Series LFII Residential Flat-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinklers (TY2524) described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this doc- ument and the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addition to the standards of any au- thorities having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fi re protection system and de- vices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manu- facturer should be contacted with any questions. Sprinkler Identifi cation Number (SIN) TY2524 IMPORTANT Always refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP700 for the “INSTALLER WARNING” that provides cautions with respect to handling and instal- lation of sprinkler systems and com- ponents. Improper handling and in- stallation can permanently damage a sprinkler system or its components and cause the sprinkler to fail to operate in a fi re situation or cause it to operate prematurely. The Solder Link Element of the Sprinkler/ Support Cup Assembly is comprised of two link halves that are soldered togeth- er with a thin layer of solder. When the rated temperature is reached, the sol- der melts and the two link halves sepa- rate, allowing the sprinkler to activate and fl ow water. Design Criteria The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Flat-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinklers (TY2524) are UL and C-UL Listed for installation in ac- cordance with this section: Residential Sprinkler Design Guide When conditions exist that are outside the scope of the provided criteria, re- fer to the Residential Sprinkler Design Guide TFP490 for the manufacturer's recommendations that may be accept- able to the authority having jurisdiction. System Type Per the UL Listing, wet pipe and dry pipe systems may be utilized. Per the C-UL Listing, only wet pipe systems may be utilized. Refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP485 about the use of Residential Sprinklers in residential dry pipe systems. Hydraulic Design (NFPA 13D and 13R) For systems designed to NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R, the minimum required sprin- kler fl ow rate are given in Tables A and B as a function of temperature rating and the maximum allowable coverage areas. The sprinkler fl ow rate is the mini- mum required discharge from each of the total number of “design sprinklers” as specifi ed in NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R. The number of “design sprinklers” spec- ifi ed in NFPA 13D and 13R for wet pipe systems is to be applied when designing dry pipe systems. Hydraulic Design (NFPA 13) For systems designed to NFPA 13, the number of design sprinklers is to be the four most hydraulically demanding sprinklers. The minimum required dis- charge from each of the four sprinklers is to be the greater of the following: • The fl ow rates given in Tables A and B as a function of temperature rating and the maximum allowable cover- age area. • A minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ft2. over the “design area” comprised of the four most hydraulically demand- ing sprinklers for the actual coverage areas being protected by the four sprinklers. The number of “design sprinklers” specifi ed in NFPA 13 for wet pipe sys- tems is to be applied when designing dry pipe systems. Dry Pipe System Water Delivery When using the Series LFII Residential Flat-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinklers (TY2524) in dry pipe sprinkler systems, the time for water delivery exceed 15 seconds for the most remote operat- ing sprinkler. Obstruction to Water Distribution. Sprinklers are to be located in accor- dance with the obstruction rules of NFPA 13D, 13R, and 13 as applicable for residential sprinklers as well as with the obstruction criteria described within the Technical Data Sheet TFP490. Operational Sensitivity Install sprinklers relative to the ceiling mounting surface as shown in Figure 3. The Series LFII Residential Flat-Plate Concealed Pendent Sprinklers must not be used in applications where the air pressure above the ceiling is greater than that below. Down drafts through the Support Cup can delay sprinkler op- eration in a fi re situation. Sprinkler Spacing The minimum spacing between sprin- klers is 8 feet (2,4 m). The maximum spacing between sprinklers cannot ex- ceed the length of the coverage area (Table A) being hydraulically calculated (e.g., a maximum of 12 feet for a 12 ft. x 12 ft. coverage area or 20 feet for a 20 ft. x 20 ft. coverage area.) When aesthetics and optimized flow characteristics are key consider- ations, the Series LFII (TY1234) should be the first choice. The 3.0 K-factor of the Series LFII Res- idential Pendent Sprinkler has been designed to optimize flows (that is, to avoid over discharging) specifically for small coverage areas up to 14 ft. x 14 ft. (4,3 m x 4,3 m). The required resi- dential flow rates can then be delivered with the use of smaller pipe sizes and reduced water supply requirements. The Series LFII Residential Sprinklers are intended for use in the following scenarios: • wet pipe residential sprinkler systems for one-and two-family dwellings and mobile homes per NFPA 13D • wet pipe residential sprinkler systems for residential occupancies up to and including four stories in height per NFPA 13R • wet pipe sprinkler systems for the residential portions of any occu- pancy per NFPA 13 The recessed version of the Series LFII Residential Pendent Sprinkler is intended for use in areas with finished ceilings. It employs a two-piece Style 20 Recessed Escutcheon. The Recessed Escutcheon provides 1/4 inch (6,4 mm) of recessed adjust- ment or up to 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of total adjustment from the flush ceiling position. The adjustment provided by the Recessed Escutcheon reduces the accuracy to which the pipe drops to the sprinklers must be cut. The Series LFII Residential Pendent Sprinkler has been designed with heat sensitivity and water distribution char- acteristics proven to help in the control of residential fires and to improve the chance for occupants to escape or be evacuated. NOTICE The Series LFII Residential Pendent Sprinklers (TY1234) described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document and with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addition to the standards of any author- ities having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted with any questions. Sprinkler Identification Number (SIN) TY1234 TFP402 Page 2 of 4 Operation The glass bulb contains a fluid that expands when exposed to heat. When the rated temperature is reached, the fluid expands sufficiently to shatter the glass bulb, allowing the sprinkler to activate and flow water. Design Criteria The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Pendent Sprinklers (TY1234) are UL and C-UL Listed for installation in accordance with the fol- lowing criteria. Residential Sprinkler Design Guide When conditions exist that are outside the scope of the provided criteria, refer to the Residential Pendent Sprinkler Design Guide TFP490 for the manufac- turer’s recommendations that may be acceptable to the local authority having jurisdiction. System Type Only wet pipe systems may be utilized. Ceiling Types Smooth flat horizontal, or beamed, or sloped, in accordance with the 2013 Edition of NFPA 13D, 13R, or 13 as applicable. Hydraulic Design (NFPA 13D and 13R) The minimum required sprinkler flow rate for systems designed to NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R are given in Table A as a function of temperature rating and the maximum allowable cov- erage areas. The sprinkler flow rate is the minimum required discharge from each of the total number of design sprinklers as specified in NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R. Hydraulic Design (NFPA 13) For systems designed to NFPA 13, the number of design sprinklers is to be the four most hydraulically demanding sprinklers. The minimum required dis- charge from each of the four sprinklers is to be the greater of the following: • The flow rates given in Table A for NFPA 13D and 13R as a function of TFP402 temperature rating and the maximum allowable coverage area. • A minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ft.2 over the “design area” comprised of the four most hydrau- lically demanding sprinklers for actual coverage areas protected by the four sprinklers. Obstruction to Water Distribution Sprinklers are to be located in accor- dance with the obstruction rules of NFPA 13D, 13R, and 13 as applica- ble for residential sprinklers as well as with the obstruction criteria described within the TYCO technical data sheet TFP490. Operational Sensitivity Sprinklers are to be installed with a deflector-to-ceiling distance of 1-1/4 to 4 inches. Sprinkler Spacing The minimum spacing between sprin- klers is 8 feet (2,4 m). The maximum spacing between sprinklers cannot exceed the length of the cover- age area being hydraulically calcu- lated (e.g., a maximum of 12 feet for a 12 ft. x 12 ft. coverage area, or 16 feet for a 16 ft. x 16 ft. coverage area.) Refer to Table A. Installation The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Pendent Sprinklers (TY1234) must be installed in accor- dance with this section: General Instructions Do not install any bulb-type sprinkler if the bulb is cracked or there is a loss of liquid from the bulb. With the sprin- kler held horizontally, a small air bubble should be present. The diameter of the air bubble is approximately 1/16 inch (1,6 mm). A leak-tight 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler joint should be obtained by applying a min- imum-to-maximum torque of 7 to 14 ft.-lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). Higher levels of torque can distort the sprinkler inlet with consequent leakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Max. Coverage Area (a) Ft. x Ft. Care and Maintenance The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Pendent Sprinklers (TY1234) must be maintained and ser- viced in accordance with this section: Before closing a fire protection system main control valve for maintenance work on the fire protection system that it controls, obtain permission to shut down the affected fire protection system from the proper authorities and notify all personnel who may be affected by this decision. Absence of the outer piece of an escutcheon, which is used to cover a clearance hole, can delay sprinkler operation in a fire situation. The owner must assure that the sprin- klers are not used for hanging any objects and that the sprinklers are only cleaned by means of gently dusting with a feather-duster. Otherwise, non- operation in the event of a fire or inad- vertent operation may result. (Ref. Installa- tion Section.) The owner is responsible for the inspection, testing, and maintenance of their fire protection system and devices in compliance with this document, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Asso- ciation (e.g., NFPA 25), in addition to the standards of any other authorities having jurisdiction. Contact the install- ing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer regarding any questions. Automatic sprinkler systems are rec- ommended to be inspected, tested, and maintained by a qualified Inspec- tion Service in accordance with local requirements and/or national codes.

Technical Services 800-381-9312 | +1-401-781-8220 www.tyco-fire.com General Description The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Flush Horizontal Side- wall Sprinklers (TY2384) are decorative, fast response, fusible solder sprinklers designed for use in residential occu- pancies such as homes, apartments, dormitories, and hotels. When aesthet- ics is the major consideration, the Se- ries LFII Sprinklers (TY2384) should be the first choice. The Series LFII Sprinklers (TY2384) are to be used in wet-pipe residential sprinkler systems for one- and two family dwellings and manufactured homes per NFPA 13D; wet-pipe resi- dential sprinkler systems for residen- tial occupancies up to and including four stories in height per NFPA 13R; or, wet-pipe sprinkler systems for the resi- dential portions of any occupancy per NFPA 13. The Series LFII Sprinklers (TY2384) has a 4.2 (60,5) K-factor that provides the required residential flow rates at re- duced pressures, enabling smaller pipe sizes and water supply requirements. The flush design of the Series LFII Sprinklers (TY2384) features a sepa- rable escutcheon providing 3/16 inch (4,8 mm) horizontal adjustment. This adjustment reduces the accuracy to which the pipe drops to the sprinklers must be cut to help assure a perfect fit installation. The Series LFII Sprinklers (TY2384) has been designed with heat sensitivity and water distribution characteristics prov- en to help in the control of residential fires and to improve the chance for oc- cupants to escape or be evacuated. NOTICE The Series LFII Residential Flush Hori- zontal Sidewall Sprinklers (TY2384) described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document and with the applica- ble standards of the National Fire Pro- tection Association, in addition to the standards of any authorities having ju- risdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. Owners are responsible for maintaining their fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition. The in- stalling contractor or sprinkler manu- facturer should be contacted with any questions. Copper Operation The sprinkler assembly contains a small fusible solder element. When exposed to sufficient heat from a fire, the solder melts and enables the inter- nal components of the sprinkler to fall away. At this point the sprinkler acti- vates with the deflector dropping into its operated position (Figure 1C), per- mitting water to flow. TFP425 Page 2 of 6 Design Criteria The Series LFII Residential Flush Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers (TY2384) are UL and C-UL Listed for installa- tion in accordance with the following criteria. Note: When conditions exist that are outside the scope of the provided cri- teria, refer to the Residential Sprinkler Design Guide TFP490 for the manu- facturer’s recommendations that may be acceptable to any authority having jurisdiction. System Type. Only wet-pipe systems may be utilized. Hydraulic Design. The minimum required sprinkler flow rate for systems designed to NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R are given in Table A as a function of temperature rating and the maximum allowable coverage areas. The sprinkler flow rate is the minimum required discharge from each of the total number of “design sprinklers” as specified in NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R. For systems designed to NFPA 13, the number of design sprinklers is to be the four most hydraulically demanding sprinklers. The minimum required dis- charge from each of the four sprinklers is to be the greater of the following: • The flow rates given in Table A for NFPA 13D and 13R as a function of temperature rating and the maximum allowable coverage area. • A minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ sq. ft. over the “design area” com- prised of the four most hydraulically demanding sprinklers for the actual coverage areas being protected by the four sprinklers. Obstruction to Water Distribution. Sprinklers are to be located in accor- dance with the obstruction rules of NFPA 13 for residential sprinklers as well as with the obstruction criteria de- scribed within the TYCO technical data sheet TFP490. Operational Sensitivity (Horizontal and Sloped Ceilings). The sprinklers are to be installed in the flush position per Figure 1 with the pro- vided escutcheon. In addition the top-of-deflector-to-ceil- ing distance is to be within the range (Refer to Table A) being hydraulically calculated. Sprinkler Spacing. The minimum spacing between sprin- klers is 8 feet (2,4 m). The maximum spacing between sprinklers cannot ex- ceed the length of the coverage area (Refer to Table A) being hydraulically calculated (for example, maximum 12 feet for a 12 ft. x 12 ft. coverage area, or 20 feet for a 20 ft. x 20 ft. coverage area). Precautionary Warnings for Corro- sive Environments The Series LFII Residential Flush Hor- izontal Sidewall Sprinkler (TY2384) must be installed in a non-corrosive environment. The improper use of corrosive agents such as flux, or other products that contain chloride ions, whether applied internally or externally to the sprin- kler system, may result in corrosion ELEVATION TABLE A NFPA 13D AND NFPA 13R WET PIPE HYDRAULIC DESIGN CRITERIA FOR THE SERIES LFII RESIDENTIAL FLUSH HORIZONTAL SIDEWALL SPRINKLERS (TY2384) FOR HORIZONTAL CEILING (Maximum 2 Inch Rise for 12 Inch Run) Maximum Coverage Area (a) Width x Length (b) Ft. x Ft. Accordingly, it is essential that the Se- ries LFII Residential Flush Horizontal Sidewall Sprinkler (TY2384)be installed only by experienced fire sprinkler engi- neers, who comply fully with NFPA13, 13D, 13R and 25, ASTM B 813, ASTM B 828 and Copper Development Asso- ciation (CDA). Copper sprinkler system piping. Any time copper piping is used in any part of a fire sprinkler system, the cop- per piping must be installed in confor- mance with all applicable standards and requirements for copper piping, including: NFPA13, 13D, 13R and 25, ASTM B 813, ASTM B 828, and Copper Development Association (CDA). Any soldering in any part of a sprinkler sys- tem, either internally or externally, must be done with use of only an ASTM B 813 approved flux. Residual flux must be thoroughly REMOVED from both the interior and exterior surfaces of the pip- ing before installing the sprinkler heads. The use of improper flux, or the failure to thoroughly remove proper flux, may result in corrosion of the sprinkler head or stress cracking, which in turn may cause the sprinkler heads to develop leaks, operate unexpectedly, or not op- erate properly. TFP425 Page 4 of 6 Installation The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Residential Flush Horizontal Side- wall Sprinklers (TY2384) must be in- stalled in accordance with the follow- ing instructions. NOTICE The Protective Cap is to remain on the sprinkler during installation until the ceiling installation is complete. The Pro- tective Cap must be removed to place the sprinkler in service. Obtain a 1/2 inch NPT sprinkler joint by applying a minimum to maximum torque of 7 to 14 ft.lbs. (9,5 to 19,0 Nm). Higher levels of torque can distort the sprinkler Inlet with consequent leakage or impairment of the sprinkler. Do not attempt to compensate for in- sufficient adjustment in the Sprinkler by under- or over-tightening the Sprinkler/ Support Cup Assembly. Re-adjust the position of the sprinkler fitting to suit. Each sprinkler must be inspected be- fore installation. Do not use any sprin- kler that exhibits any deformations or cracks, including cracks on the protec- tive cap. 1. The Sprinkler must be installed only in the pendent position and with the Sprinkler waterway centerline per- pendicular to the mounting surface. 2. Install the sprinkler fitting so that the distance from the face of the fit- ting to the mounting surface will be nominally 29/32 inches (23,0 mm) as shown in Figure 1A. 3. With pipe thread sealant applied to the pipe threads, hand tighten the Sprinkler into the sprinkler fitting. 4. Wrench tighten the Sprinkler using only the Sprinkler Socket or Wrench & Socket Combination (Figure 2). The wrench recess of the Sock- et is to be applied to the sprinkler wrenching area (Figure 1A). Note: The Sprinkler Wrench must be correctly aligned to slide over the Pro- tective Cap. After the leading edge of the Sprinkler Wrench passes over the flat portion of the Protective Cap, it must be rotated and realigned to en- gage with the sprinkler wrenching area. Conversely to remove the Sprinkler Wrench, sufficiently pull the Sprinkler Wrench so that it disengages from the sprinkler wrenching area, and then ro- tate the Sprinkler Wrench so that it can pass over the Protective Cap. 5. Step 5. Use the “backwall tolerance limit” indicator (Figure 1A) on the Protective Cap to check for prop- er installation depth. The finished wall surface must line up with- in the 3/16 inch (4,8 mm) range of the “backwall tolerance limit”. Figure 1A illustrates the finished wall sur- face at the mid-point of the “back- wall tolerance limit”. Relocate the sprinkler fitting as necessary. If desired the Protective Cap may also be used to locate the center of the clearance hole. Apply chalk to the center point of the Cap and then gently touch the wall material against the center point of the Cap. 6. After the wall has been completed with the 2-1/4 inch (57,2 mm) diam- eter clearance hole, use the Pro- tective Cap Removal Tool (Figure 3) to remove the Protective Cap and then push on the Escutcheon until its flange comes in contact with the wall. If the Escutcheon cannot be engaged sufficiently to contact the wall and/or the Escutcheon can- not be engaged per Figure 1C (that is 3/16 inch (4,8 mm) to flush with respect to the face of the sprinkler body), relocate the sprinkler fitting. Improper handling and installation can permanently damage a sprinkler system or its compo- nents and cause the sprinkler to fail to operate in a fire situation or cause it to operate prematurely. Technical Services 800-381-9312 | +1-401-781-8220 www.tyco-fire.com General Description The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Series LFII Dry-Type Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers (TY2335) are decorative, fast response, frangible bulb sprinklers designed for use in residential occu- pancies such as homes, apartments, dormitories, and hotels. When aesthetics and optimized flow characteristics are the major consideration, the Series LFII Sprinklers (TY2335) should be the first choice. These sprinklers may be used in wet pipe, dry pipe, or preaction systems. Residential sprinklers listed for dry pipe or preaction systems must undergo special testing at Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., including a 15-second delay while passing all UL1626 test criteria. The sprinklers described in this data sheet have undergone this special UL testing and are therefore listed for the types of residential designs cited below. Dry-Type Sprinklers are typically used where: • sprinklers are required on dry pipe systems that are exposed to freezing temperatures; for example, sprin- kler drops from unheated portions of buildings. • sprinklers and/or a portion of the con- necting piping are exposed to freezing temperatures; for example, sprinkler drops from wet systems into unheat- ed areas. • sprinklers are used on systems that are seasonally drained to avoid freezing; for example, vacation areas. The Series LFII Dry-Type Residential Hori- zontal Sidewall Sprinklers are intended for use in Residential Sprinkler systems for one- and two-family dwellings and mobile homes per NFPA 13D; residential sprinkler systems for residential occu- pancies up to and including four stories in height per NFPA 13R; or, sprinkler systems for the residential portions of any occupancy per NFPA 13. These sprinklers have a 4.4 (63,4) K-factor that provides the required residential flow rates at reduced pressures, supporting smaller pipe sizes and water supply requirements. The recessed version is intended for use in areas with finished walls. It employs a two-piece Style 20 Recessed Escutcheon. The Recessed Escutcheon provides 1/4 inch (6,4 mm) of recessed adjustment or up to 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of total adjust- ment from the flush mounting surface position. The design of this escutcheon provides a level of flexibility in adjusting sprinklers to fixed pipe drops. The Series LFII Dry-Type Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers are de- signed with heat sensitivity and water characteristics proven to help in control- ling residential fires and improving the chance for occupants to escape or be evacuated. NOTICE The Series LFII Dry-Type Residential Horizontal Sidewall Sprinklers (TY2335) described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this docu- ment, as well as with the applicable standards of the National Fire Protection Association, in addition to the standards of any authorities having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the perfor- mance of these devices. Owners are responsible for maintaining their fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition. The install- ing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted with any questions. General Description The TYCO RAPID RESPONSE Se- ries LFII Residential Pendent Sprin- klers (TY1234) are decorative, fast response, frangible bulb sprinklers designed for use in residential occu- pancies such as homes, apartments, dormitories, and hotels. When aes- thetics and optimized flow character- istics are key considerations, the Se- ries LFII (TY1234) should be the first choice. The 3.0 K-factor of the Series LFII Residential Pendent Sprinkler has been designed to optimize flows (that is, to avoid over discharging) specifi- cally for small coverage areas up to 14 ft. x 14 ft. (4,3 m x 4,3 m). The re- quired residential flow rates can then be delivered with the use of smaller pipe sizes and reduced water supply requirements. The Series LFII Residential Sprinklers are intended for use in the following scenarios: • wet pipe residential sprinkler sys- tems for one-and two-family dwell- ings and mobile homes per NFPA 13D • wet pipe residential sprinkler sys- tems for residential occupancies up to and including four stories in height per NFPA 13R • wet pipe sprinkler systems for the residential portions of any occupan- cy per NFPA 13 The recessed version of the Series LFII Residential Pendent Sprinkler is intended for use in areas with finished ceilings. It employs a two-piece Style 20 Recessed Escutcheon. The Recessed Escutcheon provides 1/4 inch (6,4 mm) of recessed adjust- ment or up to 1/2 inch (12,7 mm) of to- tal adjustment from the flush ceiling position. The adjustment provided by the Recessed Escutcheon reduces the accuracy to which the pipe drops to the sprinklers must be cut. The Series LFII Residential Pendent Sprinkler has been designed with heat sensitivity and water distribution char- acteristics proven to help in the con- trol of residential fires and to improve the chance for occupants to escape or be evacuated. NOTICE The Series LFII Residential Pendent Sprinklers (TY1234) described herein must be installed and maintained in compliance with this document and with the applicable standards of the National Fire Pro tection Association, in addition to the standards of any au- thorities having jurisdiction. Failure to do so may impair the performance of these devices. The owner is responsible for maintain- ing their fire protection system and devices in proper operating condition. The installing contractor or sprinkler manufacturer should be contacted with any questions. IMPORTANT Always refer to Technical Data Sheet TFP700 for the “INSTALLER WARNING” that provides cautions with respect to handling and instal- lation of sprinkler systems and com- ponents. Hydraulic Design (NFPA 13D and 13R) The minimum re quired sprinkler flow rate for systems designed to NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R are given in Table A as a function of tempera- ture rating and the maximum allow- able coverage areas. The sprinkler flow rate is the minimum required dis- charge from each of the total number of design sprinklers as specified in NFPA 13D or NFPA 13R. • A minimum discharge of 0.1 gpm/ft.2 over the “design area” comprised of the four most hydrau- lically demanding sprinklers for ac- tual coverage areas protected by the four sprinklers. The maximum spacing between sprinklers can- not exceed the length of the cover- age area being hydraulically calculat- ed (e.g., a maximum of 12 feet for a 12 ft. x 12 ft. coverage area, or 16 feet for a 16 ft. x 16 ft. coverage area.) (b) Requirement is based on minimum flow in GPM (LPM) from each sprinkler. The associated residual pressures are calculated using the nominal K-factor. Refer to Hydraulic Design under the Design Criteria section. (c) For NFPA 13 residential applications, the greater of 0.1 gpm/ft2 over the design area or the flow in accordance with the criteria in this table must be used. TFP402 Page 3 of 4
