Thank you for purchasing the ALERT™ J5 – a breath

alcohol tester (BAT) that measures the alcohol level in human breath. Based on your jurisdiction, your ALERT J5 comes with preset levels that indicate whether the alcohol breath test result is a fail (red LED light), warning (amber LED light) or pass (green LED light). SAFETY AND PRECAUTIONS Take the following precautions to ensure smooth and uninterrupted use of your device: • Use the product for its intended purpose only • Use AA Alkaline batteries only • Do not store in extreme heat or cold and avoid exposing the device to direct sunlight for extended periods of time • Do not blow smoke or any fluids into the mouthpiece, as these can damage the sensor • Do not open the BAT case. Doing so will void the warranty and may also damage the components within • Keep all magnets and transmitting devices (such as mobile phones) away from the BAT to minimize RF interference • If you spill any liquid on the ALERT J5, remove all excess fluid with a cloth and allow the device to dry thoroughly before attempting to power on. Do not power on in case of excessive water damage

All ACS products are warranted to be free of defects in

workmanship and materials for a period of one year from the date of shipment. ACS agrees to replace or repair any defective device, provided the defect was not caused by misuse or mishandling. The ALERT J5 being returned for warranty repairs must be properly packaged and shipped prepaid to an authorized service provider. MAINTENANCE ALERT J5 requires periodic maintenance and calibration. After testing and calibrating at the factory, ALERT J5 is deactivated so it can be stored without losing any clock time from the calibration period. You need to activate it to start using it (see the “Activating” section). Once activated, ALERT J5 automatically increments the date for the next calibration by 365 days from the date of activation. NOTE: ALERT J5 is calibrated for optimal performance at the point of shipment. Buttons and Menus

The ALERT J5 has an interface similar to a cellular phone, which allows you to navigate all menus using the two buttons. Either button powers on the device. To navigate using the two buttons: • Use the right button to scroll down to your selection (scrolling up is not possible) • Use the left button to select (Enter) the option The device has the following menus: • Last 100 tests: Recalls and displays the last 100 test results. You have the option of printing using the right button. Refer to the “Printing” section for details • Calibration: Shows the date of last calibration. You can re-calibrate using the right button. Specialized equipment is required to accurately calibrate ALERT J5 and you should not attempt to calibrate it yourself • Deactivation/Activation: A service menu option for use by manufacturer or distributer. Units are supplied to customer in “Activated” state • Date/Time: Shows the current date and time of the device. Use the right button to scroll through the digits and the left button to change the values. You can also set the time to a 12 or 24 hour format • Settings: -- Change the units of the BrAC/BAC. Using the right button, scroll to the desired unit and press left button to select. The units available are: mg%, %BAC, g/L, mg/L, and μg/100mL -- Backlight: Set the brightness of the backlight and the time you would like the light to stay on

time can be between 30 seconds and 900 seconds (15 minutes) • Language: Set the display language using the right button. Scroll through to view available options • Shut down: Use this menu to manually shut down the device without waiting for automatic shut off. This option does not deactivate the device; it only shuts off the device BAC/BrAC Format The blood alcohol concentration (BAC) or the breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) format is available in five formats; mg%, mg/L, %BAC, g/L and μg/100mL. You can select the desired unit from the Settings menu. Power On/Shut Down Press either of the two buttons to power on the device. A flashing amber LED light indicates that the device is warming up for a test, and you will see a WAIT message on the display (for approximately 3 seconds). A green flashing LED light with a READY message on display indicates that the device is ready and you can now do a breath test. You can manually shut down the device by selecting Shut down from the Main Menu. Alternatively, the device shuts down automatically after a specific period of time. You can set this time to suit your needs from the Settings menu option.

ALERT J5 is shipped deactivated after it is calibrated

and passes inspection at the factory. This allows the device to be stored without losing any time from the calibration period. You have to activate the device to start using it. Once activated, the date for the next calibration increments by 365 days from the date of activation. A Not Activated message when you initially power on the device indicates that it is not activated and no test can be performed until it is activated. NOTE: This feature is displayed on the Main Menu, only if your ALERT J5 has been previously calibrated. It is not possible for you to deactivate the device. To activate: 1. From the Not Activated screen, press the left button to activate it. The date the device was deactivated is shown. 2. Press the right button to activate the device. The calibration due date is now 365 days from the current date. Battery The ALERT J5 requires two AA Alkaline batteries to operate. To insert, remove the battery compartment rear cover (press the tab to release).

Taking a Breath Test

NOTE: Certain things like drinking, eating, and smoking may distort the results of a breath alcohol test. It is recommended that you rinse your mouth with water or wait for at least 20 minutes before taking a test. 1. Take a new mouthpiece and insert it on top of the ALERT J5 device. With the display facing you, connect the mouthpiece to the device by aligning the holes and having the rimmed (larger) end of the mouthpiece pointing to the left. NOTE: To ensure accurate results, use a new mouthpiece for each test. A used mouthpiece may be contaminated from the previous tests, which may result in inaccurate readings. Use part number 95-000130 to order more mouthpieces from ACS. 2. Power on the device by pressing either of the two buttons. You will see a flashing amber LED light and a WAIT message as the device goes through the boot up sequence. 3. After 2 to 3 seconds, once the flashing LED light turns green and the device displays a READY message, you can begin a breath test. ABOUTREADY MENU

4. Take a deep breath and blow into

the mouthpiece moderately, at a constant rate and pressure, until you hear a click sound (approximately 5 seconds). You should hear a continuous beep, indicating a proper breath flow. The click indicates the sampling process is complete. NOTE: If the breath sample is insufficient, the LED light flashes red and you will see a message to correct the problem. Refer to the “Troubleshooting” section for details. 5. Stop blowing when you hear the click and the tone stops. 6. The device analyzes the sample. Time taken (a few seconds) depends on the amount of alcohol present in the breath sample. If the breath test is being done outdoors in colder weather, the time to analyze may increase by a few seconds. 7. ALERT J5 analyzes and displays the results. NOTE: The colour of the LED light that accompanies the results is for reference only; results given in numbers should be considered at all times, especially for new and professional drivers that may have a different maximum limit as per local regulations. 0.020 % BAC PRINT MENU
