2.2.3.1
Accelerometer Power Consumption
The power usage of the accelerometer on the Telematics card depends on the factors in
Table 3.
Table 3
Accelerometer Power Consumption Factors
Parameter
Description
Sleep Duration
This controls the duration of the power-off interval used by
the accelerometer hardware to save power. If non-zero, the
accelerometer hardware performs the normal sample
processing required for event detection followed by a sleep
period in which the device is suspended to conserve power
[T301].
Sample Rate
The sample rate setting controls the sample rate of the
accelerometer hardware. Using a high sample rate reduces
aliasing and missed events at the expense of power
consumption and CPU processing time [T301].
Event Detectors
The creation/configuration of event detectors can have a
large impact on the power-consumption of the terminal.
Setting up detectors that do not require any software based
post processing result in the lowest power consumption.
Setting up multiple thresholds with multiple durations
which requires post processing keeps the accelerometer and
CPU running longer.
The use of SHOCK detectors while in filtered gravity
compensation mode forces active power mode and the
continuous processing of accelerometer samples.
Active Sample Buffer
Handles
The creation/configuration of event detectors can have a
large impact on the power consumption of the terminal.
Setting up detectors that do not require any software based
post processing will result in the lowest power

satellite systems, the operation in the 5150-5250MHz band (channels 36 to 48)
is restricted to indoor usage only. Outdoor usage in these channels is allowed
in the United States.
Note: The WLAN/Wi-Fi card has its own SSID/WPA2 password sticker which ships
with the card. Ensure you attach the sticker to the underside of the SG-7100
base unit.
The WLAN/Wi-Fi expansion card includes the following features:
802.11a 5.8GHz WLAN plus 802.11b/g/n 2.4 GHz WLAN
WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, mixed WPA/WPA2-PSK encryption
SMA male connector
Dual SSID
Failover to WLAN client for WAN connectivity
Simultaneous access point and client mode for providing service or connection as
a wireless LAN
Up to 10 simultaneous users
Each WLAN expansion card has a unique SSID that identifies it to a WLAN client
device. Any client device attempting to connect to that SSID will be asked for a Wi-Fi

2.14 Accelerometer Sensors
The terminal has a 3D accelerometer to detect motion in any axis. The accelerometer is
important for low power terminals when it is critical to save power when stationary,
while quickly detecting when motion has started. In powered terminals where low power
is not critical, GPS can be polled to detect motion.
In low power applications frequent GPS fixes can dominate the power budget. To reduce
the power budget effects of GPS fixes, an accelerometer can be used to trigger a GPS fix
to detect if motion has occurred.
SG-7100 - Hardware Guide
© SkyWave Proprietary 27 T300, Version 01
The accelerometer thresholds to detect motion vary depending on the environment. In
order to avoid false motion detects, extensive testing is required to ensure that adequate
acceleration magnitude thresholds and time durations are used.

Accelerometer Operating Modes
The accelerometer hardware can be in one of three possible modes. The accelerometer
switches between these modes without any explicit control by the user.
Table 20
Accelerometer Power Modes
Operating Mode
Description
Suspended Mode
Suspended mode is the default mode when the accelerometer
hardware has nothing to do and no data acquisition is taking place.
All event detection is disabled and it consumes the least amount of
current. Suspended mode is automatically entered when no event
detectors are enabled and no sample capturing is taking place.
Low Power Mode
In low power mode, the accelerometer is periodically switching
between a sleep phase and a wake-up phase to conserve power. The
sleep phase is controlled by the sleepDuration property (PIN 3)
To enable low power mode, the sleep duration must be set to a non-
zero value. The accelerometer API uses low-power mode unless
sample capture is enabled.
NOTE: Low power mode adds up to sleepDuration milli-seconds to
event detection timing and sample acquisition.
Active Mode
In active mode (normal mode), the accelerometer hardware is fully
powered up and performing continuous data acquisition at the

Operating Mode
Description
configured sample rate.
Active mode is entered when sample capturing is active or detectors
are enabled and the sleepDuration (PIN 3) is zero.
The accelerometer supports the following gravity compensation modes:
None
In this mode (the default) there is no compensation with respect to gravity
performed by the API. The Z-axis of this orientation always contains the gravity
component. When hardware offset compensation is performed, the gravity
component of the Z-axis is preserved. There is no effect on tilt calculations since
gravity is present in the samples
Fixed Axis
In this mode, the gravity component of the standard Z-axis is zeroed if hardware
offset compensation is performed. Tilt computations automatically add back the
gravity vector of the Z-axis before computing the tilt solution.
2.14.1.2
Sampling Rates
The tables below specify the sample rates supported by the accelerometer hardware.
Refer to [T301] for sampleRate property mapping.
Note: Caution must be taken when using sampling rates above 125 Hz.

cards.
Note: Expansion cards must be configured once they are installed in the base unit
and before the unit is mounted.
SkyWave offers various expansion cards (Section 1.2.2) for use with the SG-7100.
Expansion cards are designed to fit into one of the two expansion slots accessed from the
unit's front or back panels. In general, cards with antenna interference – such as the
WLAN card – are installed in the back slot to avoid interfaces with the 3G antennas on
the front of the base unit. Expansion cards are designed with board-edge connectors for
easy installation and replacement in the field.
To install an expansion card:
1. Disconnect power to the unit.
2. Use a T6 Torx screwdriver to remove the three screws from the bottom plate on
the back (WLAN/Wi-Fi card only) or front panel, and remove the plate.
If installing a WLAN/Wi-Fi card, ensure that you attach the SSID/WPA2
password sticker to the underside of the SG-7100 base unit.
3. Hold the expansion card so that the text for the connectors is oriented correctly
(readable).
4. Slide the card into the slot, using the side channels or grooves on the unit to
guide the card into place. Ensure the screw holes line up.
5. Push gently until the card is flush with the housing.
6. Insert the screws and use the T6 screwdriver to tighten them. Torque to .225 N.m
(2 inch-lbs).
7. Repeat the procedure for any additional cards.
Removing expansion cards requires a different procedure depending on the type of
card. Contact SkyWave Customer Support for assistance.

Note: Remember to leave enough cable slack near the unit for strain relief so as not
to introduce any additional force on the connector. SkyWave recommends
securing the cables during installation.
Route the cable starting from the unit to the power source.
Note: SkyWave recommends that you tape cable ends to prevent dirt from collecting
on the contacts.
3.11 Protect the Cables and Power Connector
CAUTION
Cable management and connector strain relief should be
incorporated in the installation. SkyWave highly recommends
securing the cable at regular intervals along its length as part of
the installation to prevent cable wear and eliminate strain on the
power connector.
To protect the unit's power connector, follow the guidelines below:
Secure the cable such that it does not pull on the connector or strain the power
connector.
Tie the cable down so that the weight of a vibrating cable does not stress or strain
the power connection. Use cable ties and tie holders (Figure 36) at 300 to 600
mm intervals along the cable route to prevent chafing, wear, or strain.
Secure the cable tie holder with a self-tapping screw (Figure 36) for best holder
