FUEL MIXTURE e Your unit Is powered by a two-cycle engine which requires a fuel mixture of regular gasoline, leaded or unleaded, and a high quality engine oil specially made for 2-cycle, air-cooled engines. The internal design of the 2-cycie engine requires lubri cation of moving parts. Lubrication is pro vided when you use the recommended mix ture of gasoiine and oil. • Genuine POULAN I WEED EATER 2-cycle Engine Oil is strongly recommended for the protection of your unit. Extensive engineer ing tests have proven that Poulan/Weed Eater oil resists breakdown at high operat ing temperatures common of 2-cycle engines, resuiting in dependabie perfor- 6 mance and longer engine life. • Gasoline must be clean and not over two months old. After a short period of time, gasoiine begins to chemicaliy break down and wil l form compounds that can cause hard starting and damage in 2-cycle engines. The correct measure of gasoline to oil Is very Important. Too much oil In the mixture wiii foul the spark plug. Too little oil will cause the engine to overheat and freeze up. Always mix the fuel thoroughly In a con tainer since gasoline and oil do not readily combine. Do not try to mix fuel directly in the fuel tank.

Pour one-half of the gasoline into an ap proved, marked container. Do not try to mix oil and gasoline directly in the fuel tank. b. Add entire measure of 2-cycie Engine Oil. c. Mix. d. Add remainder of gasoline. e. Mix thoroughly for one minute. 3. IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER a. Use only recommended fuel mixtures. b. Eliminate all sources of sparks or flame in the areas where fuel is mixed, poured or stored. There should be no smoking, open flames or work that could cause sparks. b. DO NOT USE: AUTOMOTIVE OIL PREMIUM or ETHYL GASOHOL Does not have proper additives for 2-cycie engines and couid cause damage. Burns too hot for 2-cycie engines; wiil shorten spark piug iife and can damage your engine. Aicohoi absorbs moisture causing acids to form which wiil damage metai and rubber parts. c. Mix and store fuel in an approved, marked container. d. Mix and pour fuel in a well-ventilated area. Gasoline vapors are harmful to your health and are a serious fire hazard. e. Avoid over filling the fuel tank. Allow 3/4 inch for expansion. Tighten Fuel Cap securely. f. Wipe up all fuel spills before starting the engine. g. Move at least 10 feet (3 meters) away from fuel and fueling site before starting the engine. PRE-OPERATION CHECKS Before operating your unit, always: 1. USING YOUR UNIT

Your Trimmer is equipped with the semi-automatic Tap-N-Go® Cutting Head that cuts with the tip of a monofiiament nyion iine. The nyion cutting iine can easiiy remove grass and weeds from around waiis, fences, trees, and fiower beds. The cutting iine aiso can cut the tender bark of trees or shrubs and scar fences. For this reason, it is very important to iearn the proper techniques of cutting around and near ob jects. The iife of the cutting head and iine is affected by the foliowing conditions: • The nylon cutting line will wear faster: — when you are cutting against rocks, bricks, concrete, metal fences, etc., than against trees or wooden fences. — when allowed to contact solid objects at a higher speed than necessary to cut the desired material. • The cutting head will wear prematurely: — if allowed to continuously contact the ground during normal cutting. — if the line iimiter is not kept sharp. WARNING! Never use wire in place of the monofiiament cutting iine. The tip can break off during cutting and could become a dangerous missile. A. OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 1. Read your Operator's Manual. Make certain you completely understand and can follow all safety rules, precautions, and operating Instructions before operating the unit. 2. Always wear eye protection. Never lean over cutting head. Rocks or debris could be thrown Into eyes and face. 3. Dress safeiy in iong pants and wear boots or safety shoes. Do not wear loose clothing, jewelry, short pants or sandals; or go barefoot. 4. Check the unit before operation. Look for worn, loose, or damaged parts. Do not use until the unit Is In proper working order. 5. inspect the area to be cut. Remove all debris and objects that could be thrown, become entangled In the cutting head or cause damage during cutting. 6. Keep children, bystanders, and pets safeiy away. Before starting the engine and during opera tion, make certain children, bystanders, and pets are at a safe distance away from the work area—a minimum of 30' (feet). 7. Avoid bodily contact with the muffler. Use caution when changing operating posi tions to avoid contact with the muffler. The muffler area can be hot and cause serious burns. B. ADJUSTING THE CUTTING LINE The cutting line on the Tap-N-Go® head Is ad justed seml-automatlcally. After new line is ad vanced, the line llmlter on the shield cuts the nylon line to an Ideal length. 1. To advance iine: a. Operate the engine at least one-half throt tle. b. Hold cutting head parallel to and above the grassy area of the ground. c. Tap the cutting head lightly on the ground one time. See Figure 11. Approximately 2 Inches of line will be advanced after each tap. 2. Always keep the Shield in place when the unit is being operated. 3. Keep the iine iimiter sharp for fast, easy cut off. The iine iimiter can be sharpened with an electric grinder. NOTE: Always tap the cutting head on a grassy area of the ground. Tapping on hard surfaces such as concrete or asphalt can cause excessive wear to the cutting head. LINE LIMITER CUTS EXCESS LINE TO ADVANCE CUTTING LINE, TAP LIGHTLY ON GROUND ONE TIME Figure 11 CAUTION:! Do not allow the cutting head to contact the ground during normal cutting. Con stant contact with the ground will result in damage and premature wear to the cutting head. 10

C. CUTTING METHODS

Always remember—the tip of the line does the cutting. You will achieve better results by not crowding the line Into the cutting area. Allow the unit to trim at Its own pace. The right way and wrong way are shown In Figures 12 and 13. RIGHT Figure 12 WRONG Figure 13 WARNING! Always wear eye protection. Never lean over cutting head. Rocks or other debris could be thrown into eyes and face and cause serious personal injury. ) , TRIMMING Figure 14 MOWING > ^' ' 1. TRIMMING—Figure 14 Hold the cutting head at a 30 degree angle to the cutting area for efficient trimming. Do not force the cutting line Into the work area. Allow the tip of the line to do the cutting. 2. MOWING—Figure 15 Your Trimmer Is Ideal for mowing In places conventional lawn mowers cannot reach. In the mowing position, the cutting line Is parallel to the ground. With practice, this technique will provide the results Illustrated. When mowing, avoid pressing the head Into the ground as this can cause damage to your unit as well as scalp the ground. 3. SCALPING —Figure 16 To remove unwanted vegetation around trees, posts, monuments, etc., maintain a 30 degree angle with the cutting head and allow the tip of the cutting line to strike the ground. NOTE: Increased line wear Is to be expected when using scalping techniques. 4.
