2 Introduction
The Combi-Line supplied by Grossenbacher Systeme AG is a future-
oriented product concept for industrial data processing and visualization. The
core of this line consists of three product groups:
• LCD Panels are industrial flat screens. They allow the local separation of
the visualization/operation from the actual data processing (so-called,
distance solutions).
• Box PCs are industrial PCs without an integrated flat screen. Together
with the LCD Panels, they are used as a basis for distance solutions or
enable exclusive data processing without visualization (so-called
headless operation).
• Panel PCs are industrial PCs with an integrated flat screen. As an “all-in-
one” solution, they are used wherever ergonomic HMI operation and high
PC performance have to be combined in a small space.
The Combi Line therefore enables a wide range of applications for industrial
data processing and visualization to be implemented flexibly and powerfully.
The Compact Panel PC M described in this document belongs to the Panel
PC product group. This integrated solution of compact industrial PC and
brilliant flat screen offers the following outstanding benefits:
•
SCALABLE SCREEN SIZE
•
SCALABLE PROCESSING PERFORMANCE
•
FAN-FREE OPERATION POSSIBLE
•
OPERATION POSSIBLE WITHOUT ROTATING PARTS
•
FRONT IP65
•
The Compact PC also described in this device description belongs to the
Box PC product group. This device offers all the above features
The three integrated Ethernet-Interfaces grant an easy connection of a
variety remote peripheral device. The RS232 and USB interfaces can be
used for connecting peripheral devices.
The device can be mounted in control cabinets or desks (Compact Panel
PC). The devices are not intended for mobile use.
This device description is designed as a reference guide for the installation,
connection, operation and maintenance of all versions of the Compact Panel
PC M line, and also provides all the relevant technical data.

5.2 CONNECTING THE POWER SUPPLY
The Compact Panel PC M is a device compliant with protection class 3.The
system must be fed with a SELV 24VDC (safety extra-low voltage) supply.
The power supply is not electrically isolated. The 0V terminal is directly
connected to the housing potential. The power supply is protected with a
resettable fuse. The relevant national regulations must be observed when
connecting the Compact Panel PC M.
The connection should be made as follows:
•
The cross-section of the power supply cable must be between 0.75mm²
and 2.5mm²
•
A lead or wire can be used for the connection
•
The current consumption must be taken into account for the power
supply ( sect. 11).
•
The functional ground is not compulsory for operation. It may help to
prevent interference and potential differences.
•
The 0V pin is directly connected to the housing potential.
•
The two connection cables must be connected with each other close to
the plug in order to ensure a safe connection.
The plug connector (socket strip with screw terminals) for the terminal is
supplied with the device.
If the polarity is reversed and a 0V connection is added at
the same time, e.g. GND connection of the COM1
interface, the leakage current will flow across this 0V
connection. The Compact PC/Compact Panel PC or
external components may be destroyed if the housing is
not correctly connected to the 0V potential.
The two connection cables must be connected with each
other close to the plug in order to ensure a safe
connection.
The Compact Panel PC M contains no serviceable fuse.

5.3 PREPARING THE SHIELD CONNECTIONS
The preparation of the data and signal cables is an essential factor in
ensuring the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of the Compact
PC/Compact Panel PC. This applies both to immunity and emission.
The RS232 and LPT interfaces are connected with a D-subminiature
connector in compliance with DIN 41652. For this only use metal or
metallized connector casings with a cable clamp for strain relief that is
securely screwed or clamped onto the connector. The clamping of the cable
shield ensures that it is connected with the connector casing over a large
area and with low inductance. It is connected via the casing to the housing of
the Compact PC/Compact Panel PC.
The cable shield must be connected using the method described below or
one with identical inductance properties:
1.
Strip the cable
2.
Shorten the exposed shield braid to a length of approx. 3 cm.
3.
Turn back the braid over the cable sheath.
4.
Use a heat shrinkable tubing or a rubber grommet to cover the cable
sheath with the folded back shield braid so that 5 to 8 mm of exposed
cable shield is left at the sheath end and is cleanly covered at the back.
5.
Fit the connector
6.
The cable is then fastened at the exposed shield braid and the cable
sheath below it directly underneath the cable clamp strap of the
connector casing.

temperature is taken into account. A 10cm clearance from the housing walls
must be provided on all sides in order to ensure sufficient air circulation. A
minimum clearance of 10cm must be provided to active elements such as
the load power supply, transformers etc.
Direct sunlight (UV component) reduces the lifespan of the LCD crystals.
The following must be ensured to prevent the device
from overheating during operation:
- All cooling slots must be free in order to ensure
system cooling.
- Avoid the exposure of the flat screen to direct
sunlight.
- The angle of inclination to vertical mounting must
not exceed ± 35°
- A forced airflow increases the overall reliability
7.2 FLUSH MOUNTING IN FRONT PANEL - GENERAL
1. Insert the Compact Panel PC from the front into the front panel
cutout.
2. The front seal must be flat and evenly positioned between the front
plate and the front panel.
3. Fasten the rear of the device to the supplied fixing frame using the 4
locking nuts (until the front frame is touching the front panel on all
sides).
Ensure that the seal is seated correctly on the front panel
If devices are provided with an all-round seal, both ends
of this seal must fit flush underneath the device.
Avoid torques higher than 0.5 Nm, as these may
otherwise damage the device.
The thickness of the front panel must not exceed 5 mm.

8 Notes on the Touch-screen
8.1 BASIC FUNCTION OF THE TOUCH-SCREEN
Infrared touch-screen version
The touch-screen operates using an active light matrix in the infrared range.
The interruption of this light matrix at any point initiates an operation if a
touch-screen element is actuated (e.g. a button).
If the light matrix is interrupted for longer than approx. 7s, this initiates a
timeout. The touch-screen then switches to the “non actuated” state, and
further operations can only be made after the touch button has been
released and then actuated again. Several simultaneous touch operations
are not evaluated. On systems running Windows® the timeout can be
adjusted in the Touch-Control panel-Applet.
Resistive touch-screen version
The resistive touch-screen operates in the same way. When the touch foil is
pressed, the position of the touch operation can be determined according to
the electrical resistance. This initiates an operation if a touch-screen
element is actuated (e.g. a button).
With this operating principle, the touch-screen must be calibrated. The initial
calibration is carried out at the factory. A recalibration is required if the touch
position changes in relation to the screen. This can be due to aging,
temperature etc.
The calibration can be carried out with EPAM (see also EPAM manual,
“Touch_calibrate” button operation).
The calibration can also be activated by touching the touch-screen after the
power up (with EPAM). In this case the message “Performing touch
calibration” is output. In this mode, the touch panel must be pressed for
approx. 5 s more (5 times beep). The touch calibration is activated after the
touch-screen is released.
On systems running Windows® the calibration can be carried out with
Touch-Control panel-Applet.
The calibration should be carried out with a touch stylus
in order to ensure the optimum functioning of the touch-
screen.

8.2 POWER UP FUNCTION TEST
Infrared touch version
The touch-screen runs a function test each time it is powered up, in which all
the IR channels are tested. Faulty IR channels can be evaluated by the
application and displayed graphically. A failure of the IR channels is normally
due to severe contamination of the IR transparent plastic frame, which
consequently has to be cleaned ( sect. 10). The optical elements of the
light matrix are located behind the IR transparent plastic frame in the front
panel of the device.
IR channels that are continuously interrupted will be detected by the touch
controller after a timeout of approx. 15s and no longer included in the
evaluation. In extreme cases, this may mean that individual zones cannot be
touch activated.
Do not touch the screen of the touch panel during the
system power up until your application is running.
The touch-screen performs a function test during the
power up.
Resistive touch version
The function of the resistive touch-screen cannot be monitored due to the
technology involved.

10 Maintenance and Repair
Cleaning the infra-red touch
For proper operation ensure that the signal levels of the channels are not so
severely reduced or interrupted due to excessive contamination through dirt.
Clean the black plastic frame on the device front regularly with a damp soft
cloth. Ensure that the surface is not scratched or scoured, especially when
removing hard deposits and abrasive dust.
Do not expose the front of the device to solvents, which may corrode and
remove the plastic frame and foil (frame material: Makrolon 2805,
manufacturer: Bayer AG).
Cleaning the resistive touch
Do not expose the front of the device to solvents, which may corrode, and
damage the plastic foil (foil material: polyester). Do not spray the cleaning
agent directly on the screen but onto the cleaning cloth.
Cleaning should only be carried out when the device is powered off!
This ensures that any functions are not accidentally activated when the
screen is touched.
Do not use a coarse scouring cloth, scouring powder or
solvent.
Battery
The battery is used to back up the real-time clock. The battery should be
changed every 5 years in order to prevent any date/time loss.
The battery must be changed from trained personnel.
To replace the battery, the enclosure has to be opened.
Observe ESD protection measures when changing the
battery!
Repairs
Repairs to Compact Panel PC M devices must only be carried out by the
manufacturer. (Manufacturer address sect. 13)
No liability is accepted for any modifications made to the device that are not
described in this document.
Transport
Only the original packaging must be used for transporting the device. The
stipulated climatic conditions ( sect.11) must be observed.
