PYKO-out: Professional IP audio endpoint
Click on “Apply” to take the settings into account, or “Cancel” to discard them.
6.6. Serial port configuration
Parameters of the serial port can be configured from the « Settings » menu, « Serial».
PYKO serial port can be used either to transmit RS232 data to the serial port of distant PYKOs, or
to locally send real time commands to a PYKO.
If the serial port is used, it is necessary to configure its parameters :
- Baud rate : bit rate (from 300 to 230 400 bits/s)
- Data bits : number of bits for data (8 or 7 bits)
- Parity : parity bit (no bit, ‘even’ parity bit, or ‘odd’ parity bit).
- Stop bits : number of stop bits (1 or 2)
- Handshake : serial transmission mode (no protocol, XON/XOFF protocol , RTS/CTS).
RS232 tunneling mode can be configured via the remote control parameters defined here-after.
6.7. Configuration of remote control and local control
To setup these parameters, go to menu «Settings», «Remote Control».
Remote control of PYKO through TCP commands
13
PYKO-out: Professional IP audio endpoint
PYKO can be controlled through ASCII TCP commands. The TCP port used for receiving the
TCP commands must be configured in « Device Control», « Port for TCP control
connection ». This port is the destination port used by a control application to send the TCP
commands to PYKO.
The ASCII commands are described at the end of this document.
Local control of PYKO through commands sent via the serial port
PYKO can be controlled through ASCII commands sent through its RS232 port. To enable this
mode, go to section « Serial Link » and select « Control » for parameter « Serial link mode ».
The ASCII commands are described in a separate document.
6.8. Tunneling of auxiliary data
RS232 tunneling mode configuration
RS232 tunneling consists in transmitting serial data from of a PYKO towards one or several
distant PYKOs (maximum 4). The transmission can be done in TCP mode (one PYKO to another
one), or in UDP mode (one to maximum four).
Note: the UDP mode does not guarantee that the distant PYKO receives the data.
To enable the TCP mode, select « Gateway TCP server » or « Gateway TCP client » for
parameter «Serial link mode ».
- Gateway TCP server: in this mode, PYKO-out receives the serial data sent from another PYKO
on the port defined in « Connection port ».
14
PYKO-out: Professional IP audio endpoint
- Gateway TCP client : in this mode, PYKO-out establishes the TCP link with another PYKO
configured in server mode, and sends the serial data to the unicast or multicast address defined
in « IP address » and to the TCP port defined in « Connection port ».
To enable the UDP mode, select « Gateway UDP » for parameter «Serial link mode ».
PYKO-out listens to the serial data it receives on the UDP port defined in « Connection port ».
The parameter « IP address » must then be filled in case serial data are sent to a multicast
address.
PYKO-out can send serial data in UDP mode towards maximum 4 destinations. These
destinations are couples of « IP address / UDP port » defined in parameters « Destination 1 » to
« Destination 4 » in section « UDP transmission configuration ».
15
PYKO-out: Professional IP audio endpoint
GPIO tunneling mode configuration
GPIO tunneling consists in transmitting GPI statuses of a PYKO to the GPOs of another PYKO.
Its configuration can be done from section « GPIO tunneling ».
PYKO-out can receive distant GPI statuses, or transmit its GPI statuses.
To receive distant GPIs statuses, select option « Server » from parameter « Tunneling mode »,
and select the listening TCP port from parameter « Port for TCP connection ».
To send GPI statuses, select option « Client » from parameter « Tunneling mode », and select
the destination IP address and TCP port from parameters « TCP server IP Address if client
mode » and « Port for TCP connection ».
Click on Apply to confirm the parameters.
6.9. Configuration of decoding priority levels
The sources PYKO-out can decode are :
○
an RTP IP audio stream. Supported audio formats are PCM, mp3, AAC-LC or G711.
○
HTTP IP audio stream (shoutcast or Icecast) in mp3 .
○
M3u playlists with mp3 sound files, stored on the USB memory stick.
PYKO-out can decode these sources according to 3 priority levels (priority1 being the highest
priority, and priority 3 being the lowest). At any time, PYKO-out decode the highest priority which
source is present. This allows the following :
- getting automatic backup in case a source is lost (typically an IP stream).
- automatic switching to a high priority message while decoding a medium priority (background
music for instance).
The configuration consists in declaring a source for each necessary priority level.
Rdaio broadcasting example:
- Priority 1 = RTP stream
- Priority 2= HTTP stream (fir st backup is an internet radio)
- Priority 3= USB Playslit (second backup in case no stream is received)
Go to menu « Audio », and select the priority level to configure.
Priority level 1 : Stream priority #1
16
PYKO-out: Professional IP audio endpoint
This is the highest priority. This priority can only decode an RTP stream. The stream parameters
are the following :
●URL : URL of the RTP stream to be decoded. Syntax : rtp://addressIP:Port
For a unicast stream, enter 0.0.0.0 in the IP address, and give the UDP port.
Ex : rtp://0.0.0.0 :5040
For a multicast stream, give the multicast IP address and the port.
Ex : rtp://224.0.0.100 :50040
●Activation : Select Enabled to enable this priority level. Select Disabled if you do not want to
use this priority, in which case PYKO-out never decodes this priority.
●Channel Mode : Significant only in PCM format. Select Mono or Stereo.
●Audio Format : Select the format of the audio data of the IP stream to be decoded (mp3, PCM
from 8 kHz to 48 kHz, G711 A-law or µlaw).
In case the configured format does not match the received audio format, PYKO-out interprets
this as an error and does not decode the stream. As a consequence, PYKO-out switches to
the immediately lower priority (Stream priority level “n+1”).
●Latency : this corresponds to the input buffering which is necessary to compensate the
network jitter. The higher the jitter, the higher the buffering value.
Latency values are about:
Lat = 1
32ms
Lat = 2
64ms
Lat = 3
96ms
Lat = 4
128ms
Lat = 5
192ms
Lat = 6
254ms
Lat = 7
384ms
Lat = 8
512ms
Lat = 9
640ms
Lat = 10
768ms
In mp3, latency value must be at least
equal to 6.
In PCM, latency values lower than 3 can
be used on high performance networks
(LAN).
●
Default Volume : default attenuation applied to the output, from 0 dB to -40 dB.
●
Minimum volume: maximum attenuation that can be adjusted from the « Live » WEB page.
●
Maximum volume: minimum attenuation that can be adjusted from the « Live » WEB page.
●
Balance : Left / Right balance. Centred by default.
Click on Apply to confirm the configuration.
17
PYKO-out: Professional IP audio endpoint
Priority level 2 : Stream priority #2
This priority level can be used as follows:
●first backup level in case RTP stream defined in priority 1 is lost. This backup can be and RTP
stream, or HTTP stream.
●standard priority (typically background music in an hotel). Priority 1 is then reserved to
announcements.
●For decoding a stream selected among several streams received on this priority (kind of IP
audio tuner). The stream to be decoded (more exactly the receiving port) can be selected
through ASCII commands (through TCP or RS232), from the « Live » WEB page by selecting
the receiving port, or from a GPI (see GPIs configuration).
●Local playlist (stored in folder \bk of the USB storage), which playback is triggered when
priority 1 is lost.
Parameters which differ compared to priority 1 are the following :
- URL : URL of the RTP stream, HTTP stream, or name of an m3u playlist.
Syntax for a unicast RTP stream : rtp://0.0.0.0:Port (ex : rtp://0.0.0.0 :50040).
Syntax for a multicast RTP stream : rtp://IPaddress :Port (Ex : rtp://224.0.0.100 :50040).
Syntax for an http stream (shoutcast / Icecast): http://servername:Port/Mountpoint (Make sure to
enable the DNS from the Settings page).
- Time out : This is the time granted to PYKO-out to catch the HTTP stream. If this time is
exceeded, the http stream is considered as absent, and PYKO switches to priority 3 if it is
defined.
- Nbr streams : defines the number of RTP streams that can be received on priority 2. These
streams must be received on UDP ports which values are incremented by 2 starting from the port
value defined in the URL.
Example:
- URL: rtp://0.0.0.0:5004
- Nbr streams = 4
=> 3 additional RTP streams are sent to this PYKO-out (unicast), on ports 5006, 5008, 5010.
This also works with a multicast IP address, in which case all the streams are sent to this same
multicast address.
18
PYKO-out: Professional IP audio endpoint
Priority level 3 : Stream priority #3
This priority level has the same parameters as priority level 2, with exception of the number of
streams.
Backup playlist must be stored in folder /bk of the USB memory stick.
6.10. Real time control (Live) via WEB page
The “Live” WEB page allows changing in real time (without restarting PYKO) the output level, as
well as the stream to be decoded on priority level 2 in case several streams have been declared.
●
Current Stream: allows selecting the port of the stream to be decoded on priority 2.
●
Select Stream : allows the validation of parameter Current Stream.
●
Level -- : each ‘mouse click’ on this button applies an additional attenuation of 1 dB on the
decoded stream. The maximum attenuation is defined in the priority page.
●
Level ++ : each ‘mouse click’ on this button applies an additional gain of 1 dB on the
decoded stream. The maximum attenuation is defined in the priority page.
●
Mute ON : a mouse click on this button mutes the audio outputs.
●
Mute OFF : a mouse click on this button mutes the audio outputs.
19
PYKO-out: Professional IP audio endpoint
6.11. Display of PYKO-out status
The status of PYKO-out is displayed on the top left of the WEB pages.
Displayed information are :
Backup Playlist Present : allows to know whether the defined playlist is detected or not on the
USB memory stick.
Stream priority level: allows to know the priority level that is being decoded.
Listening audio: allows to know the source that is being decoded: URL, or playlist name.
Audio format: audio format that is being decoded.
Volume & Balance: current attenuation on the audio outputs.
Mute: mute status on the outputs (ON / OFF).
Out Peak Meters: instantaneous peak-meter value of the decoded audio signal, given in dBFs (0
dBfs being the maximum value).
Jitter margin : indicates the jitter variation that can be supported on the current stream. If the
displayed value goes to 0, it is necessary to increase the parameter « Latency » from the “Stream
priority” page associated to this stream.
6.12. M3u playlists and mp3 sound files on the USB
memory stick
PYKO-out supports USB memory sticks FAT16 formatted.
M3u backup playlists and associated mp3 sound files must be located in folder \bk.
M3u playlists and associated mp3 sound files that can be triggered through ASCII commands
must be located in folder \an
6.13. Firmware update
PYKO-out is delivered with a “Playout” firmware ready to run. This firmware does not support the
USB memory stick, and is to be used with Digigram AudioManager middleware.
For all applications that require the USB memory stick, it is necessary to apply the
“Playout-extended” firmware.
PYKO firmware are available from Digigram WEB site, PYKO-out support page. Download the
firmware file. Then, from the PYKO-out WEB page, go to the , , and click
‘Browse’ to indicate the location of the downloaded firmware file; click on the ‘Upload’ button.
When the message ‘compound.bin successfully loaded’ is displayed, click onto the link ‘Click on

6.14. Using PYKO-out with Audio Manager
If you use your PYKOs with Audio Manager, you will first have to either assign an IP address through
the web pages or turn the DHCP on (Audio Manager will then automatically assign an IP address).
Audio Manager Server will detect this address and allow the Audio Manager Client to configure it.
To be detected by Audio Manager, the TCP control port has to be set to “40002”, the UDP listening port
to “40004”. These are also the values defined in the factory configuration.
You may decide that Audio Manager is to control PYKO-out only in part. In this case, use the PYKO-out
html pages to configure the device accordingly (cf. on-line help of the pages).
For more details on managing PYKO through Audio Manager, please refer to its on line help.
6.15. PYKO-out in ‘stand-alone’ mode
You can now access the embedded html pages that will allow you to configure the device.
22
PYKO-out: Professional IP audio endpoint
Next, set the parameters for the three audio stream priority levels (Menu: Audio)
For more details on parameterizing your PYKO-out in ‘stand-alone’ mode, please refer to on-line help of
the html pages.
6.16. Using PYKO-out with EtherSound
PYKO-out is also capable of decoding EtherSound 100/spkr (www.ethersound.com). This is an
exclusive mode of PYKO-out. In this mode, PYKO-out can decode two EtherSound mono streams.
As default setting ex factory, the equipment works in IP mode. Switching from IP mode to EtherSound
is done through the Web pages by selecting the EtherSound mode.
In EtherSound mode, the control of PYKO-out is done through EScontrol. Access to the web pages is
no longer possible.
To switch back to IP mode, PYKO-out needs to be reset (press the ‘Reset’ button for at least five
seconds). PYKO-out will re-boot with the default factory settings.
Note: each time PYKO-out is switched from one mode to another, the previous settings are lost, the
device reboots in factory configuration.
23
PYKO-out: Professional IP audio endpoint
GPIO
PYKO-out is delivered with four GPIs and four GPOs on terminal block connectors; the counterparts
are provided. For details see Appendix D.
GPI
The PYKO-out GPIs are compatible TTL 5 V.
A GPI must maintain its state for at least 20 ms.
The GPIs can have either local action or a distant action by TCP tunneling.
For the local actions, the user can:
●
choose whether it will take place on rising or falling edge
●
modify the output volume + or –
●
mute the output
●
listen to the following or preceding level ‘2’ RTP stream
For the TCP tunneling:
●
the changes of a GPI state are transmitted through TCP if an application is connected. This
information is received either by Audio Manager or by another application, but it cannot be
received directly by another PYKO-out.
●
TCP connection is required by Audio Manager (PYKO-out is used as server). To establish the
connection, the listening port has to be configured by html page.
●
the overall latency of the GPI signal transfer via Audio Manager to the destination GPO is
inferior to 100 ms.
GPO
The PYKO-out GPOs are relay outputs.
It is possible to configure through the web page whether the initial value of each GPO is set to’0’ or to
‘1’.
The GPO can be configured by TCP protocol or from an application.
Serial port (RS232 on DB9)
PYKO-out provides a RS232 serial port on male DB9 on the back panel.
The RS232 can be used to control the PYKO through an external interface, such as e. g. Vity, AMX or
Crestron.
It is possible to use the RS232 in gateway mode, in multicast and multi-destination (up to 4
destinations)
Parameter setting of the tunneling is done from the PYKO-out html pages.
For the pinout of the serial port, please refer to the appendix F.
Audio format
PYKO-out can decode various audio formats, depending on the embedded firmware (see appendix A).
Decoding can be either mono or stereo.
24
PYKO-out: Professional IP audio endpoint
Note: If for some reason the decoding parameter should not correspond to the one of the audio
stream received, PYKO-out will interpret that as an error and will not play the stream.
PYKO-out will then switch to the audio stream of minor priority (Stream priority level n-1).

11. APPENDIX D: RTP FORMAT
An audio stream encoder must respect the size and the payload type described underneath.
RTP frame size
The maximum payload size in bytes for the encoder can be calculated from the formula:
Min(1300, 20.chans.Bps.samplerate/1000)
where chans is the number of channels, Bps is the number of bytes per sample and samplerate is the
sampling rate in Hertz;
The maximum payload size for MP3 is 1400 bytes.
