If the unit does not perform properly when operated as instructed in this Owner’s Manual, check the following

guide for the possible remedy of a problem before contacting the Customer Service. Sometimes a perfor- mance problem can be easily solved by checking seemingly apparent but often overlooked possibilities. It could save your time and money. No power No operation by remote control Poor or no picture Poor or no picture in playback Poor or no sound Cannot go into recording mode Timer recording does not work or results in failure Picture or color fades in and out when copying a videotape SYMPTOM POSSIBLE REMEDY PAGE • Make sure the power plug is connected to an AC outlet. • (In case of power failure) Check the breaker. • Check if the batteries are weak or inserted incorrectly. Replace weak batteries and insert with their polarities (+/- signs) as indicated. • Aim the remote control at the remote sensor and operate within 23 feet (7 m) of the unit. • Remove all obstacles to clear the path of the infrared signal. • Refer to the infrared signal. • Select the correct mode to operate by pressing [SELECT]. • The operable range from the unit is 10 feet (3m) within 15˚. • Check if antenna or cable is connected properly. • Check for the broken pin or wire of antenna cable. • Check for source of reception disturbance. • Press [SELECT] to select the correct mode. • Perform channel scanning to memorize available TV channels. • Try another channel. If OK, then possible station problem. • Adjust picture control (COLOR/CONTRAST/BRIGHT etc.). • Check for magnetism from nearby appliances and try degaussing. • Adjust tracking control. • Try video head cleaning. • The videotape may be old or worn. Replace with new one. • Adjust volume control using [VOL. X / Y]. • Try another channel. If OK, then possible station problem. • Check if the unit is in Still mode or Slow motion playback. If so, press [PLAY B] to return to normal playback. • Make sure the cassette has an erase-prevention tab. If neces- sary, cover the hole with plastic tape. • Make sure the begin/end time is set correctly. • Make sure the power is off to activate timer recording. • Check if the unit’s clock is set to current time and date. • The program may contain copy protection signals that restricts copying. • The timer setting overlapped with another setting has priority. • Check if the tape reached the end during recording. • Check if the power failure during recording. • You cannot copy a copyrighted videotape. Not in case of a prerecorded pro- gram. • A few seconds of delay is common for live broadcast. If a dialogue exceeds the display capacity (220 words per minute), selective editing is used so that the captions remain up-to-date with the current TV screen dialogue. • Caused by interferences of building, power lines, thunder- storms, etc. • The broadcast may use a time compression process to speed up the program. The decoder cannot read the compressed information and captions will be lost. • Possibility of a illegal copy or an erroneous copying process accidentally performed by the fabricator. • You are in TEXT mode. Select CAPTION mode or "OFF" • This unit cannot play DVD-RAM/CD-i/Photo CD/Video CD/ DVD with region codes other than "1" and "ALL". • Clean the disc. • Place the disc correctly, with the label side up. • Cancel the parental setting or change the control level. • Correct the audio output settings. • Confirm the power and audio settings of external audio com- ponent. • This unit does not support DTS audio. This is not a malfunc- tion. • During the playback of a 2-layered disc, pictures may stop for a moment. This happens while the 1st layer is being switched to the 2nd layer. This is not a malfunction. • This happens right after fast forwarding or rewinding. • The selected language is not available for audio or subtitle on the DVD. • The DVD does not contain sequences recorded from different camera angles. • The DVD does not contain audio source or subtitles in the selected language. • That operation is not available by the unit or the disc. • Scratched disc. Read the description in this Owner’s Manual for details on correct operations. • Playback from a desired track and random playback are not available during playback.

• Handle the discs so that fingerprints and dust do

not adhere to the surfaces of the discs. • Always store the disc in its protective case when it is not used. • To clean-off, use a soft cloth. • Do not use a hard cloth since this will mar the disc. • Wipe the disc in a straight line from center to edge. • Never wipe with a circular motion. • Do not use detergent or abrasive clean- ing agents. 34 MAINTENANCE DEGAUSSING A degaussing circuit in this unit clears up color errors on the TV screen. Color errors occur when there is any excess magnetism close to the unit. This circuit is designed to operate once when the unit is first plugged in. If you see minor color errors on the screen, unplug the unit for approx- imately 30 minutes. When you plug the unit again, the degaussing circuit will operate to clear errors. Take this step any time the TV screen is accidental- ly magnetized or when you move the unit. AUTO HEAD CLEANING • Automatically cleans video heads as you insert or remove a cassette, so you can see a clearer pic- ture. • Playback picture may become blurred or interrupt- ed while the TV program reception is clear. Dirt accumulated on the video heads after long peri- ods of use or the usage of rental or worn tapes can cause this problem. If a streaky or snowy picture appears during play- back, the video heads in your unit may need to be cleaned. 1. Please visit your local Audio/Video store and pur- chase a good quality VHS Video Head Cleaner. 2. If a Video Head Cleaner does not solve the prob- lem, please call our help line mentioned on the front page, to locate an Authorized Service Center. NOTES: • Remember to read the instructions included with the video head cleaner before use. • Clean video heads only when problems occur. IF THE LASER OPTICAL PICKUP UNIT IS DIRTY • If the unit still does not perform properly when it is operated, while referring to the relevant sections and to “TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE” in this Owner’s Manual, the laser optical pickup unit may be dirty. Consult your dealer or an Authorized Service Center for inspection and cleaning of the laser optical pickup unit. CABINET CLEANING • Wipe the front panel and other exterior surfaces of the unit with a soft cloth immersed in lukewarm water and wrung dry. • Never use a solvent or alcohol. Do not spray insecticide liquid near the unit. Such chemicals may cause damage and discoloration to the exposed surfaces. SERVICING • Should your unit become inoperative, do not try to correct the problem by yourself. There are no user-serviceable parts inside. Turn off, unplug the power cord and please call our help line men- tioned on the front page, to locate an Authorized Service Center. IR SIGNAL CHECK Use the AM radio or the digital camera to check if the remote control properly sends out the infrared signal. It will help to define the cause of malfunction. Using AM radio • Tune the AM radio to no broadcasting band. Press any button on remote control toward the radio. If the radio receives the signal from remote control properly, the sound will flutter. Using digital camera (including built-in camera of cellular phone) • Press and hold any button on remote control toward a digital camera. The remote control is working if you confirm infrared light through the digital camera.
