G Do not wear your earphones when you
are crossing streets or near traffic.
G Do not use your earphones whilst driv-
ing a motor vehicle, it may create a
dangerous traffic hazard and may be
illegal. Remember to obey all of the
safety rules in your area.
G Do not play the unit at a high volume.
Hearing experts advise against ex-
tended listening at high volume levels.
G If you experience ringing in your ears,
reduce the volume or discontinue use.
I Volume setting
Reduce the volume before starting to play.
MiniDiscs, compared to ordinary cassette
tapes, have very little noise. If the volume
is adjusted according to your usual expec-
tations of noise, you may damage your
hearing due to the high volume.
I Concern for others when
listening to MiniDiscs
If you are enjoying listening to music, the
sound escaping from your earphones may
annoy people around you.
If you are using the unit in particularly
crowded places (such as on trains or
buses), reduce the volume to avoid annoy-
ing people around you.
I Storing the unit
Avoid using or leaving the unit in the
following places.
G Places exposed to direct sunlight for
many hours (especially in cars with the
doors and windows closed) or near
heaters.
(The cabinet may deform, change col-
our or the unit may malfunction.)
G Places exposed to water.
G Places exposed to excessive dust.
G Places where temperatures are exces-
sively high or low.
G Places (bathrooms) where the humidity
is extremely high.
G Places with strong magnetic fields such
as TVs or loudspeakers.
G Places exposed to vibration.
G Places where sand can easily enter the
inside of the unit (beaches etc.).
G If the unit is used near radio tuners or
TVs, noise and/or picture interference
may result. If you experience these

due to improper use. Refer all servicing
to a SHARP authorised service centre.
PRECAUTIONS
4
MD-MS722H(SUK)
G A rechargeable lithium-ion battery is the
only kind that can be used.
Even if the battery supplied with the unit
is not used, you should charge it at least
once every three months because of the
special quality of this battery.
G The rechargeable battery can be charged
approximately 300 times.
G Do not use any battery other than that
specified. Use of other batteries may
cause malfunctions.
G When the operating time is reduced to
about half the normal amount of time,
even after a full charge is performed, re-
place the battery with a new one.
G When charging or when using the re-
chargeable battery, use it within an ambi-
ent temperature range of 5°C to 35°C.
G If the rechargeable battery is used in a
cold environment, the operating time will
be reduced.
Since the rechargeable battery is vulnera-
ble to damage, please note the following.
G Do not carry the battery in your pocket or
a bag together with metal objects (keys,
coins, jewelry, etc.).
The battery may short out and generate
significant amounts of heat.
G Do not short-circuit the terminals as they
will become very hot and will damage the
battery.
G Do not dip the battery in water, do not
dispose of it in a fire, and do not take it
apart.
To avoid damaging the battery and short-
ening its service life, please note the fol-
lowing.
G Do not drop or subject the battery to
shock.
G Do not insert objects (metal etc.) into the
battery compartment of this product or into
the rechargeable battery. Do not get the
terminals dirty. If the rechargeable termi-
nals are dirty, the operating time may be
shortened or it may not be possible to
charge the battery.
G After the rechargeable battery is charged
or used, it will get slightly warm. This is
normal.

MD-MS722H(SUK)
G Playback-only MiniDisc:
This type of MiniDisc usually contains
commercially available pre-recorded
music. This is the same kind of optical
disc as CDs. Playback is performed
using an optical pickup.
(Recording and editing are not possi-
ble.)
There will only
be a shutter on
one side (the back).
G Recordable MiniDisc:
This is a “raw disc” on which recording
can be performed. This is a magneto-
optical disc.
Recordings are made using a laser and
a modulated magnetic field. Repeated
recording is possible.
Shutters can be
seen on both
sides of this
type of disc.
G When making important recordings, it
is recommended that you use the AC
adaptor. A fully charged rechargeable
battery should be loaded into the unit.
Then, even if a power failure occurs,
the power source will switch over to the
rechargeable battery automatically.
G When using the rechargeable battery
or the alkaline battery, if the head-
phones volume level is set to “0", the
battery consumption will be less than
when listening to the recording whilst it
is being made.
G Insert each plug firmly. If the connec-
tions are poor, the recording may not
be made properly. Always keep the
plugs clean. If the plugs are dirty, elec-
trical noise may be recorded.
Notes:
Slide the accidental erase prevention tab,
located on the side of the disc, in the di-
rection indicated by the arrow.
G The disc will then be protected against
accidental erasure.
G To add a recording to such a disc, slide
the accidental erase prevention tab
back to its original position.

MD-MS722H(SUK)
I Recording from CDs or MDs (Synchro recording)
G Synchro recording is a method that detects the playback sound from the source
equipment. When sound is present, it automatically starts the recording. When the
source is silent, the recording will be paused.
1 Connect the external equipment.
(See page 9.)
2 Insert a recordable MiniDisc.
3 Press the G REC button.
G To record from a tuner, first tune in a
broadcast.
G To record from a CD, first start playing
the track you want to record.
4 Whilst playing sound from external
equipment connected to this unit, move
the shuttle switch up or down to adjust
the recording level.
G Adjust the recording level so that the
maximum sound volume from the
source makes the reading swing some-
where between -4 dB and 0 dB.
G To record from a CD, first adjust the
recording level. Then put the equip-
ment connected to this unit into the
playback stand-by mode.
5 Press the ENTER/SYNC button.
6 Begin playback on the source equip-
ment.
G Recording will begin automatically.
To interrupt recording:
G When
the
source
equipment
is
stopped, the unit will enter the synchro
recording stand-by mode. When play-
back is resumed, a recording will be
resumed.
G If a silence lasts for 3 seconds or more,
the recording will be paused.
G Pressing the 06 button on this unit
(when in this mode) will cause the unit
to enter the recording stand-by mode
and cancel the synchro recording
mode.

a
playback-only
MiniDisc
(commercially
available
music)
G If a Minidisc is protected against ac-
cidental erasure (page 10)
About the recording level:
G If the recording level is too low, the
playback sound volume may be too
low to hear well. If it is too high, the
playback sound may be greatly dis-
torted. Since digitally recorded CDs
have a large dynamic range (the vol-
ume can vary tremendously from
very soft to extremely loud), do not
set the recording level any higher
than is necessary.
Precautions when recording:
G Do not jar or bump the main unit
whilst recording. Otherwise, the re-
cording may be unusable.
G Depending on the strength and type
of playback signal in the original re-
cording, the new recording may not
begin or pause at the correct point
when in the synchro mode. If this
happens, try making a manual re-
cording.
Precautions when inserting a Mini-
Disc:
G To insert a Minidisc, push on the
middle of the edge of the disc whilst
holding it parallel to the main unit.
G If any resistance is felt, do not try to
force the MiniDisc into the unit. It
may cause more problems. If resis-
tance is felt, remove the MiniDisc
and try reloading it.
Note:
G Whenever any button is pressed, the
remote control display will light for
about 7 seconds.
1 Put the unit in the recording stand-by
mode. (Perform steps 1 - 4 in the “Syn-
chro recording” section.)
2 Press the 06 button.
G Recording will start.
G To record from a CD, press the 06
button, and then start playback on the
equipment connected to this unit.
G Track numbers can be created whilst
recording. (Page 18)

by mode.
G To resume recording, press the 06
button again.
The track number will be increased by
one each time you interrupt a record-
ing.
To stop recording:
Press the I/:OFF button.
G If the unit is left alone after the record-
ing has stopped, the power will be
turned off about 2 minutes later.
After recording:
Press the I/:OFF button whilst in the stop
mode.
G After the track number has been written
on the disc, the power will be turned off
automatically. (For details about the
TOC, see page 21.)
To remove the MiniDisc:
Turn off the power and move the EJECT
lever in the direction indicated by the
arrow.

impossible, even if you are using digital
cables.
When you attempt to make a new digital
recording from a track that was digitally
recorded on a MiniDisc
G MiniDiscs are designed so that only
first generation digital copies can
made, further digital copies are pre-
vented by the SCMS (Serial Copy Man-
agement System).
Before starting a synchro recording,
perform the following steps on the
equipment connected to this unit.
(1) First, put it in the playback mode.

I About TOC recording
When you start recording or editing, “TOC”
will appear in the display.
This indicates that information in the TOC
is now being changed according to record-
ing or editing being performed.
G The changed TOC information will
not be recorded on the MiniDisc
right away.
Notes:
G Whilst “TOC” is displayed, the MiniDisc
should not be removed. Turn the power
off first, and then remove the MiniDisc.
G The edited contents can be stored on
the disc after several editing steps have
been performed.
I When is the TOC recorded?
The revised TOC will be recorded on the
disc automatically when you press the
I/:OFF button whilst in the stop mode.
This will also turn the power to this unit off.
The power will be turned off after the TOC
has been recorded on the disc.
Caution:
G Whilst “TOC” or “TOC EDIT!” is dis-
played, do not do any of the following.
– Do not jar or bump the main unit.
– Do not unplug the AC adaptor.
– Do not remove the rechargeable bat-
tery or battery case.
If you do, the changes in the recorded
or edited contents will be lost if the TOC
information is not recorded properly.
G If the AC adaptor is unplugged or a
power failure occurs whilst recording
(before the TOC information has been
written on the disc), the new recording
will be erased.
When a new recording is added to a
MiniDisc in a position where TOC infor-
mation already exists, the added re-
cording will be erased.
The TOC (an abbreviation for Table of Contents) is information about the track numbers
and recorded areas that allow the unit to find musical selections or sounds. The entire
MD is controlled by the information in this TOC, which enables the unit to find the
beginning of a track quickly or to record automatically in a vacant area.
G The TOC is recorded in a specific area on a MiniDisc, which is not used for sound
recording.

Precautions when making connec-
tions:
G Do not use any remote control unit,
except for the one included with this
unit.
G Do not remove the rubber pads from
the earphones.
G Insert each plug securely, all the way
in.
G Be sure to hold the plug when re-
moving it. If you pull on the lead, it
may break, or the unit may malfunc-
tion.
Interrupted sound:
G This product is designed to eliminate
interruptions in the sound which can
be caused by vibrations. However, if
the unit is continuously exposed to
vibrations or mechanical shock, the
sound may be interrupted momen-
tarily.
When the sound is distorted:
G If the volume is too high whilst the
bass is being emphasised, the sound
may be distorted, depending on the
music on the track. If this happens,
decrease the bass level or lower the
volume level.
G If the volume is increased to “VOL
26" or higher, the bass level will be
adjusted automatically.
(This is done to reduce the distortion
in the sound.)
Caution:
G When the unit is not to be used im-
mediately after a MiniDisc has been
inserted, or when you plan to carry
the unit, turn off the power or cancel
the auto-play function. Otherwise,
the auto-play function will be acti-
vated and the battery will run down.
G Since the main unit and the AC
adaptor can heat up during use, you
should avoid allowing the unit to be
in direct contact with your skin for
any length of time.
When using the unit with a car
adaptor:
G When you switch off the ignition key
during playback, the power to this
unit will also be turned off. Then,
when the ignition key is switched on,
playback will start from the beginning
of the track where playback was
halted (Resume auto-play function).
However, the power to the unit may
not be turned off when the ignition is
turned off, depending on the type of
car.

I Checking the remaining
amount of battery charge
The remaining amount of battery charge is
shown by the battery indicator ( ) dur-
ing operation.
< How to read the battery indicator >
G When the battery is completely dis-
charged, the whole battery indicator will
flash. Recharge the battery or replace the
alkaline battery with a new one.
G When the battery has run completely out,
“BATT EMPTY” (main unit) and “Lo BATT”
(remote control unit) will appear. Then, the
power will be disconnected automatically.
Notes:
G When you are using the unit with a re-
chargeable battery and an alkaline battery
and you want to check the remaining ca-
pacity of the battery, the remaining battery
charge display may not be stable for about
20 seconds after the power is first turned
on.
G When the AC adaptor included with this
unit or a separately available car adaptor
is used, the battery indicator will not be
shown.
G The number of bars shown in the battery
indicator may increase or decrease, de-
pending on the operation being per-
formed. This is normal.
G When the rechargeable battery and the
alkaline battery are used at the same time,
the rechargeable battery is used first, and
then the alkaline battery.
Since the battery indicator shows the re-
maining amount of the particular battery
being used, the number of bars will in-
crease when the unit switches to the alka-
line battery.
I To prevent the unit from
being operated by mistake
To avoid operations being started by acci-
dentally pressing the buttons, use the hold
function.
Move the HOLD switch to the safety posi-
tion (direction indicated by the arrow).
G When the unit is in the safety mode,
pressing the buttons will have no affect.
G To cancel the safety mode, move the
HOLD switch away from the safety po-
sition (the opposite direction of the
arrow).
If the hold function is active whilst the
power is turned off, the power cannot be
turned on by mistake and the battery will
not be accidentally drained.

About the sound skip guard memory:
During playback, approximately 40 seconds
of information is stored in the semiconductor
memory. Therefore, even when the pickup
cannot read information for a second or two
due to an external shock, the sound will con-
tinue without interruption because the infor-
mation stored in memory is used.
About the auto power save function:
This is a function used to save power when
using the unit with the rechargeable battery or
the alkaline battery. Whilst in the auto power
save mode, 10 - 40 seconds of sound infor-
mation is stored in memory. When the unit is
used in places exposed to excessive vibra-
tion, cancel the auto power save function.
When the auto power save function is dis-
abled, 40 seconds of sound information is
always stored in memory. (When the AC
adaptor or a car adaptor is used, the informa-
tion storage time is always 40 seconds, re-
gardless of the auto power save mode.)

A MiniDisc is a disc inside a protective
cartridge. You can handle it freely without
worrying about dust, fingerprints, etc.
However, if dust enters the opening of the
cartridge, or there is excessive dirt on the
cartridge, or the cartridge becomes
warped, you may experience malfunc-
tions. Please note the following.
I Handling the MiniDisc
Do not touch the disc directly!
Do not open the shutter or touch the disc
directly.
If the shutter is opened forcibly, it may
break.
G Never disassemble a MiniDisc.
I Where not to store discs
Do not store discs in places with high tem-
peratures or humidity. Specifically, do not
leave discs in places exposed to direct
sunlight or in cars with the doors and win-
dows closed.
Do not leave discs in places where sand
can get into the cartridge easily (e.g.,
beaches).
I Helpful tip when attaching a
label
When attaching a label to an MD cartridge,
be sure to note the following. If the label is
not attached properly, the MiniDisc may
jam inside the unit and it may not be pos-
sible to remove it.
G If the label peels off
or partially lifts away,
replace it with a new
one.
G Do not put a new
label on top of an ex-
isting one.
G Attach the label only in the specified
location. (If it is not within the specified
area, it may cause the disc to jam in the
unit.)
I Regular cleaning
If the surface of the cartridge becomes
dusty or dirty, clean it with a dry cloth.
Shutter
Disc
Cartridge
I Moisture condensation
In the following cases, condensation
may form inside the unit.
G Shortly after turning on a heater.
G When the unit is placed in a room
where there is excessive steam or
moisture.
G When the unit is moved from a cool
place to a warm place.
When the unit has condensation inside,
the disc signals cannot be read, and the
unit may not function properly.
G If this happens, remove the disc.
The condensation should evaporate in
approximately 1 hour. The unit will then
function properly.

TROUBLESHOOTING
38
MD-MS722H(SUK)
I If trouble occurs
When this product is subjected to strong
external interference (mechanical shock,
excessive static electricity, abnormal sup-
ply voltage due to lightning, etc.) or if it is
operated incorrectly, it may malfunction. If
such a problem occurs, do the following:
1. Unplug the AC adaptor from the AC
socket.
2. Remove the battery.
3. Leave the unit completely unpowered
for approximately 30 seconds.
4. Plug the AC adaptor back into the AC
socket and retry the operation.
If strange sounds, smell or smoke come
out of the unit or an object is dropped into
the unit, remove the AC adaptor from the
AC socket immediately and contact an au-
thorised SHARP service centre.
Many potential “problems” can be resolved by the owner without calling a service tech-
nician. If something seems to be wrong with this product, check the following before
calling your authorised SHARP dealer or service centre.
PROBLEM
CAUSE
The unit does not turn
on.
G Is the AC adaptor disconnected?
G Is the battery exhausted?
G Is the unit in the safety mode?
G Has condensation formed inside the unit?
G Is the unit being influenced by mechanical shock or by
static electricity?
No sound is heard
from the earphones.
G Is the volume set too low?
G Is the remote control unit or the earphones plugged in?
G Are you trying to play a MiniDisc with data on it
instead of a MiniDisc containing music?
When the operation
buttons are pressed,
the unit does not
respond.
G Is the unit in the safety mode?
G Is the battery exhausted?
G Is the remote control unit plug or the earphone plug
inserted firmly?
Some sounds are
skipped.
G Is the battery exhausted?
G Is the unit being subjected to excessive vibration?
The MiniDisc cannot
be ejected.
G Has the track number or character information been
written on the disc yet?
G Is the unit in the recording or editing mode?
Recording and editing
are impossible.
G Is the MiniDisc protected against accidental erasure?
G Is the unit connected properly to the other equipment?
G Is the AC adaptor unplugged or did a power failure
occur whilst recording or editing?
G Is the unit in the safety mode?
G Is an optical signal being output from the external
equipment?
Read the operation manual for the external equipment.

MD-MS722H(SUK)
Even if the maximum recording
time of a MiniDisc has not been
reached, “DISC FULL” or “TOC
FULL” may be displayed.
When the number of tracks used
reaches the limit, regardless of the
remaining recording time, further
recording will be impossible.
(Maximum number of tracks: 254)
If a MiniDisc has been recorded or
edited repeatedly or if a MiniDisc has
scratches on it, it may not be possible
to record the maximum number of
tracks on it.
Even if the number of tracks and
the recording time have not
reached the limit, “DISC FULL” may
be displayed.
If there are scratches on a disc, the
unit will automatically avoid recording
in those areas. The recording time will
be reduced.
Even if several short tracks are
erased, the remaining recording
time may not show an increase.
When the remaining recording time of
a disc is displayed, short tracks less
than 12 seconds long may not be
included in the total.
Two tracks may not be combined in
editing.
For MiniDiscs on which repeated
recording and editing operations were
performed, the COMBINE function
may not work.
The total of the recorded time and
time remaining on a disc may not
add up to the maximum possible
recording time.
A cluster (about 2 seconds) is
normally the minimum unit of
recording. So, even if a track is less
than 2 seconds long, it will use about
2 seconds of space on the disc.
Therefore, the time actually available
for recording may be less than the
remaining time displayed.
If there are scratches on discs, those
sections will be automatically avoided
(no recording will be placed in those
sections). Therefore, the recording
time will be reduced.
When recorded tracks are played
back using the cue and review
operations, some sounds may be
skipped.
For MiniDiscs on which repeated
recording and editing were performed,
some sounds may be skipped whilst
cueing and reviewing.
A track number can be created in
the middle of a track.
If there are scratches or dust on a
MiniDisc, the track numbers following
that track will be increased by one.
MiniDiscs are recorded using a different system than is used for cassette tapes or DAT
recordings. Therefore, the following conditions may be encountered, depending on how
the disc has been recorded or edited. These are due to system limitations, and should
be considered normal.
