Introduction to Ultra3 Drives
Overview
Ultra3 SCSI hot-swap hard disk drives provide higher I/O bandwidth and can
work with longer cable lengths than Ultra drives. Ultra3 drives operate at SCSI
bus data rates of up to 160 MB per second--double the rate of Ultra2 SCSI. With
Ultra3 drives, HP NetRAID environments and applications will show immediate
increases in performance.
Note:
These drives are also backward compatible with Ultra2
controller systems.
Ultra3 Drives are Low Voltage Devices
Ultra3 drives have LVD (low voltage differential) signal levels. The low voltage
requirements allow the integration of the differential drivers and receivers into
drive SCSI controllers. LVD provides the signal quality necessary to run at Ultra3
data rates. LVD also allows for significantly longer SCSI bus cable lengths.
Ultra3 Drives Have Two Heights; Drive Cages Have Several Sizes
Ultra3 disk drive modules come in two heights: the 1-inch (2.5 cm) low profile
drive and the 1.6-inch (4 cm) half-height drive. NetServer drive cages come in
several sizes. There are two types of six-drive cages. The LH3, LH4, and RS-12
cages support a mix-and-match of 1-inch low profile drives and 1.6-inch (4 cm)
half-height drives. Other NetServers with six-drive cages support either 1-inch (2.5
cm) low profile drives or 1.6-inch (4 cm) half-height drives. Refer to your
NetServer manuals for details. Chapter 3 lists the places where the supported
configurations can be found.
Filler Panels
When you have fewer drives than the hot-swap cage supports, filler panels must be
inserted in empty disk locations. Filler panels ensure that the hot-swap cage has
the proper ventilation and air flow. You will remove the filler panel when you
insert a new Ultra3 disk drive module. (Figure 2-1 in the next chapter shows a
filler panel.)

Disk Spacers
When your hot-swap cage holds a mix of low profile and half-height drives, one
drive may require a disk spacer. The disk spacer fills empty space between one
drive and the adjacent drive. Disk spacers can be mounted on 1-inch (2.5 cm) low
profile drives or 1.6-inch (4 cm) half-height drives. (Figure 2-2 in the next chapter
shows a disk spacer.)

If anything is missing or damaged, call your reseller.
This chapter describes how to install the Ultra3 disk drive module in your
HP NetServer, and provides instructions for removing and storing the disk drive
module. Additionally, this chapter describes how to attach an Ultra3 drive to a hot-
swap tray.
Installing the Ultra3 Disk Drive Module
CAUTION
Protect the Ultra3 disk drive module from static electricity by
leaving it in its antistatic bag until you are ready to install it.
Before handling the disk drive module, touch any unpainted
metal surface to discharge static electricity. When you remove
the disk drive module from the antistatic bag, handle it only by
the frame.
Do not touch the electrical components. Place the disk drive
module on the antistatic bag whenever you set it down.
Disk drive modules are very susceptible to mechanical shock
and can be damaged by a drop as short as one-quarter of an
inch (.5 cm). Take care when unpacking and handling the disk
drive module. If the drop would crack an egg, it will damage
the drive.
1. If there is a filler panel in the drive location, remove the filler panel as
follows:
• Press the latch and insert your fingers.
• Using your fingers, pull the filler panel straight out.
Figure 2-1 shows a filler panel being removed from a system with a
six-drive hot-swap cage. Your HP NetServer’s enclosure may have a
four-drive cage or a two-drive cage.
Figure 2-1. Removing the Filler Panel
2. Disk spacers attach to the disk drive module with four small feet.
To remove a disk spacer from the adjacent disk drive module:
• Slide the disk spacer back, a fraction of an inch (2.5 cm), away from
your body.
• Tilt up the front of the disk spacer to disengage the front two feet.
• Pull the disk spacer forward slightly, to disengage the back two feet and
lift.
Figure 2-2. Removing the Disk Spacer From a Disk Drive Module
To attach a disk spacer to a disk drive module:
• Tilt up the front of the disk spacer and engage the back two feet.
• Press the disk spacer back, a fraction of an inch (2.5 cm), away from
your body.
• Lower the front of the disk spacer into place to engage the front two
feet.
3. On the Ultra3 disk drive module, press the blue latch in and pull the lever
out as far as it can go as shown in Figure 2-3. Pulling open the lever
retracts the locking tab on the side of the disk drive module. Be careful not
to use extreme force when pulling the lever.
Figure 2-3. Pulling Open the Lever Retracts the Locking Tab
on the Side of the Drive
4. Slide the Ultra3 disk drive module slowly into the drive location until it
stops. In some systems, drives are inserted horizontally (Figure 2-4); and in
other systems, drives are inserted vertically (Figure 2-5).
Be careful of the light pipes as you insert the drive. The light pipes are
fragile.
CAUTION
You must insert the drive slowly and gently. The connector is
designed with some long pins that must make contact before
the short pins. If the disk drive module is inserted too quickly,
the short pins make contact too quickly after the long pins.
The in-rush current can cause the power supply to shut down.
5. Press the lever in, until you hear the latch click into place.

Horizontal Position

Removing the Ultra3 Disk Drive Module
CAUTION
You must remove the disk drive module slowly to ensure that
the drive heads are parked prior to removal. Be sure to follow
these instructions carefully to prevent handling damage, such
as head slaps or head actuator unlocking.
1. To unlock the Ultra3 disk drive module, push the blue latch in, and then
pull the front lever.
2. Gently pull the disk drive module out, about an inch (2.5 cm), to break the
power connection.
3. Wait about 30 seconds for the hard disk drive to stop spinning and the
drive heads to park.
4. Use your hand to support the bottom of the disk drive module. Slowly pull
the disk drive module straight out. Do not allow the disk drive module to
fall.
5. If your disk drive modules are inserted vertically, turn the disk drive
module slowly to its horizontal storage orientation.
6. Place the disk drive module in an electrostatic protected container. Do not
stack disk drive modules.
Figure 2-6. Removing the Disk Drive Module
Installing the Ultra3 Drive in a Tray (optional)
Ultra3 SCSI hot-swap tray accessories have two different sizes: the 1.6-inch
(4 cm) half-height drive uses tray accessory D6127A, and the 1-inch (2.5 cm) low
profile drive uses tray accessory D6128A. (These tray accessories also support
Ultra2 drives.)
CAUTION
Handle the drive and tray gently during assembly. Start all
screws prior to tightening. Do not allow the drive or the tray to
drop; dropping the drive or tray will cause drive damage.
If you purchase an Ultra3-SCSI hot-swap tray accessory separately from the Ultra3
drive, refer to Figure 2-7 and follow these steps to attach the tray accessory:
1. Place the Ultra3 drive into the hot-swap tray.
2. Plug the SCA extender into the Ultra3 drive.
3. Insert the two screws that hold the SCA extender in place, then tighten
snugly. Do not over tighten.
4. Insert the four screws that attach the Ultra3 drive to the hot-swap tray, then
tighten snugly. Do not over tighten.
2. SCA extender
plugs into drive

3. Two screws hold
SCA extender in place
4. Four screws attach the
drive to the tray
