Maintaining Your Coffeemaker
Maintaining your Coffeemaker and its parts will help extend the life of the appliance.
Cleaning the Coffeemaker
Your Coffeemaker must be cleaned when you notice any of the follow conditions:
• excessive steaming
• increased brew cycle times
• the pumping action stops before all of the water has been pumped
from the water reservoir
These conditions are caused by lime or other mineral deposits.
How frequently you clean your Coffeemaker depends upon the hardness of your
tap water. The following table gives suggested cleaning intervals.
Type of Water
Cleaning frequency
Soft water
Every 80 brew cycles
Hard water
Every 40 brew cycles
To clean mineral deposits from your Coffeemaker:
1)
Pour four cups of undiluted white
household vinegar into the water reservoir.
2)
Place a paper filter into the removable
filter basket and close the brew basket lid.
3)
Place the empty decanter on the
warming plate.
Make sure to center the decanter
accurately on the warming plate
to avoid the possibility of overflow.
4)
Start the brew cycle.
• EC12 and EC13
a. Place the ON/OFF switch in the ON
position to turn the Coffeemaker on.
• ECX20 and ECX23
a. Press the BREW NOW button to turn
the Coffeemaker on.
• ECX30 and ECX33
1) Press the “Clean Cycle” button.
For convenience, everything is automatic!
The entire cycle will take approximately
45 minutes to complete. During the
cleaning cycle your coffeemaker will:
a. Slow brew approximately 3 cups (24 fluid
ounces) of cleaner.
b. Pause for 30 minutes to allow time for the
cleaning solution to dissolve mineral buildup
inside the coffeemaker. During this time the
clean light will stay on to alert you that the
cleaning process is active.
c. After the pause, your coffeemaker
will sound three audible beeps then restart
and brew the remainder of the cleaning
solution.
d. When complete, the clean light
will extinguish and your coffeemaker
will automatically turn off.
2) Discard the cleaning solution and rinse
the decanter thoroughly with clean water.
3) Fill the water reservoir with clean, fresh water.
4) Place the empty decanter on
the warming plate.
5) Remove and discard the filter used during
the clean cycle and replace it with a fresh
MR. COFFEE® paper filter. If a MR. COFFEE®
permanent filter was used during cleaning,
remove and rinse it thoroughly before
replacing it in the filter basket.
6) Press the “Brew Now” button and allow the
full brew cycle to complete.
7) Repeat Steps 2 – 6 one more time.
Your coffeemaker is now clean and ready to brew
the next pot of delicious, hot coffee!
Cleaning the Decanter
Hard water can leave a whitish stain on
the decanter. Coffee and tea may then
turn the stain brown.
To remove decanter stains:
1) Fill the decanter with a solution of equal
parts tap water and vinegar and let the
solution stand in the decanter for
approximately 20 minutes.
2) Discard the solution and wash and rinse
the decanter.
Do not use harsh abrasive cleansers
that may scratch the decanter;
scratches may cause the decanter
to break.
