SMB Connector and SCSI Cable Strain-Relief Kit Installation Instructions

1 NOTE: If you purchased your PowerEdge server and PowerEdge Scalable Disk System 100 (SDS 100) storage system at the same time, the SMB connector is preinstalled in your system and you can skip to the section entitled “Installing the SCSI Cable Strain- Relief Clip or Bracket.” Before connecting a Dell PowerEdge 6300 or 4300 system to a Dell PowerEdge SDS 100 storage system, you must install an internal server management bus (SMB) connector and cable. The cable runs from the system board to the SMB connector on the back panel to provide a connection point for the external SMB cable from the SDS 100. The kit for the internal SMB cable consists of the internal SMB cable and a bracket- mounted SMB connector for installation on the back panel of the system. Depending on the SMB installation kit you receive, the SMB connector is mounted on either a filler bracket for installation in the PCI1 slot or on a bracket that mounts in the general signal out (GSO) slot. NOTE: You can use the GSO-mounted SMB connector only if the support panel that covers the microprocessor compartment inside your system chassis supports installa- tion of the GSO-mounted SMB connector. You have the proper support panel if your panel has a cutout that allows the SMB connector to extend through it (see Figure 5). To install the SMB connector and internal cable, perform the following steps: 1. Read and follow the precautions in “Safety First—For You and Your Computer” in Chapter 7 of the Installation and Troubleshooting Guide for your system. 2. Remove the computer cover and the interior support panel as described in Chapter 7 of your Installation and Troubleshooting Guide.

3. If your system supports the GSO-slot bracket, perform steps 4 and 5; otherwise, go to step 6 for instructions on installing the PCI-slot bracket. 4. For GSO-slot brackets, locate the GSO slot on the system’s back panel (at the upper right-hand side as viewed from the back) and remove the tab for the slot. 5. From inside the chassis, orient the SMB connector as shown in Figure 1 (for 6300 systems) or Figure 2 (for 4300 systems) and insert it into the tab opening. On the back panel, secure the SMB connector with the screws that came in the kit. NOTE: Be sure not to over-tighten the screws. ! Refer to Chapter 8 of your system’s Installation and Troubleshooting Guide for instructions on releasing the expansion card clip that secures the filler bracket. 7. Insert the SMB connector bracket into the PCI1 back-panel slot as shown in Figure 3 (for PowerEdge 6300 systems) or Figure 4 (for PowerEdge 4300 sys- tems), and latch the expansion-card clip to secure the bracket. The SMB connector is located near the keyboard and mouse connectors on the 6300 system and between the dual in-line memory module (DIMM) sockets and the video connector on the 4300 system. 5 9. Reinstall the support panel. If you installed the GSO-slot SMB connector, route the connector and cable through the cutout in the support panel (see Figure 5). Ensure that the connector and cable are positioned properly so that they do not bind between the rubber standoffs. % & ' (( 10. Replace the computer cover. You are now ready to connect the external SMB cable from the SDS 100 storage sys- tem. !" # $ % Dell PowerEdge 6300 and 4300 computer systems equipped with a Dell PowerEdge SDS 100 storage system include two strain-relief clips or one strain-relief bracket in the cable kit. When installed, the bracket or clips prevent deflection of the SCSI cables connected to the host adapter card in the system. Deflection of the SCSI inter- face cables can damage the SCSI host adapter card. The following items are included in the cable strain-relief kit: Two long or two short SCSI cables Two plastic cable strain-relief clips with adhesive backs or one strain-relief bracket Two alcohol wipes If your kit includes SCSI strain-relief clips, perform the following steps to install the clips: 1. Locate the flat area on the computer’s back panel to the right of the redundant arrays of independent disks (RAID) controller card connectors. The flat area is located between the chassis ventilation holes and the edge of the computer cover. NOTE: Do not affix the cable strain-relief clips over the chassis ventilation holes or on the edge of the computer cover. 2. Use the alcohol wipes to thoroughly clean the area on the back panel. 3. Peel the plastic liner from the back of the cable strain-relief clip to expose the adhesive tape. 4. Orient the plastic clip so that the flat tab is on the top and the grooved tab is on the bottom (see Figure 6).

7 ) &*( 5. Press the back of the clip firmly against the computer’s back panel. 6. Affix the second clip above or below the other clip. Allow 24 hours for the clips to set before attaching the cables. 7. Turn off the computer. 8. Pull down the grooved tab and insert the cable into the clip. 9. Push the grooved tab under the flat tab until the clip locks securely in place. 10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 for the second cable. 11. Turn on the computer. If your kit includes a SCSI strain-relief bracket, perform the following steps to install the bracket: 1. Connect the SCSI interface cable(s) to the SCSI host adapter card. Secure the cable(s) using the two thumbscrews on the cable connector(s). flat tab grooved tab
