CapTune
CapTune is a music customization app especially developed for your PXC 550
wireless headphones. Install the Sennheiser CapTune app to make full use of
the features of your headphones. Through CapTune, you can change the sound
mode to put emphasis on speech or music clarity, or to change the voice prompt
language, among others. You can download CapTune for your device on the App-
Store or Google Play.
NFC
Near Field Communication (NFC) is a short-range wireless technology that en-
ables connection and communication between NFC-capable electronic devices
by placing them near one another or with a single touch.
VoiceMax
VoiceMax™ dual microphone technology filters away the background noise. 2
microphones work in synergy; one to emphasize your voice, and the other to
remove the ambient noise.
NoiseGard
The NoiseGard™ hybrid Active Noise Cancellation system is a combination of 2
noise-cancellation systems composed of a total of 4 microphones. Two micro-
phones with openings to the outside of the headphones work as a Feed-Forward
active noise cancellation system that reduces noise in the high-frequency band,
while the other two microphones inside the headphones work as a Feed-Back
active noise cancellation system that reduces noise in the low-frequency band.
The combination of these 2 microphone systems results in a broad reduction in
noise covering a wider band of frequencies.
aptX®
With aptX® audio coding, you can be assured of crisp, pure and full stereo
sound. It allows you to not only hear, but experience and feel the audio as it was

the outside of the headphones pick up all acoustic signals in the immediate vi-
cinity. Annoying background noise is electronically filtered out, only allowing
the voice of the other person to pass through the headphones clearly.

Pairing the headphones
CAUTION
Danger of malfunction!
The transmitted radio waves of mobile phones can impair the
operation of sensitive and unprotected devices.
Only make calls with the headphones in locations where Bluetooth
wireless transmission is permitted.
To pair your headphones with a Bluetooth device, you can either use the Near
Field Communication (NFC) or the Bluetooth search function. In order for a con-
nection between the headphones and a Bluetooth device can be established,
Bluetooth must be activated, whether you use Bluetooth or NFC pairing.
The PXC 550 headphones comply with the Bluetooth 4.2 standard. In order for
that data can be transmitted wirelessly using Bluetooth technology, you have
to pair your headphones with compatible Bluetooth devices that support the
following profiles:
 Hands Free Profile (HFP)
 Headset Profile (HSP)
 Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP)
 Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP)
 Device ID Profile (DIP)
When you switch the headphones on for the first time or if you restored the
headphones back to its default factory settings, they automatically go to the
pairing mode, see page 16 to pair the headphones to the device.
When you switch on the headphones that were previously paired to devices,
they automatically try to connect to the last two connected Bluetooth devices.
The headphones can save the connection profiles of up to eight Bluetooth de-
vices with which they have been paired.
If you pair the headphones to a ninth Bluetooth device, the saved connection
profile of the least used Bluetooth device will be overwritten. If you want to
re-establish a connection with the overwritten Bluetooth device, you have to
pair that device to the headphones again.
You can easily pair and connect your wireless headphones with your smartphone
if the device supports the Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. NFC is a
short-range wireless technology that enables connection and communication
between NFC-capable electronic devices by placing them near one another or
with a single touch.

Using the headphones
Switching the Bluetooth on/ off
In instances where using Bluetooth devices are restricted, such as during aircraft
take off of landing, you can use your headphones’ NoiseGard Active noise
cancellation feature (without the hassle of cables) to block out aircraft engine
noise. NoiseGard ANC significantly blocks out ambient noise giving you extra
comfort and rest during a flight.
When using the ANC feature, ensure that the NoiseGard ANC is switched on. To
switch the NoiseGard ANC on in full or adaptive mode, see page 27.
You can also play higher resolution music mid-air, without Bluetooth, by
connecting your headphones to your smartphone or device using the USB cable.
Push the Bluetooth switch on/off to enable or disable the Bluetooth connec-
tivity from the headphones.
– Switch the Bluetooth on “I” if you want to use the wireless features of
the headphones, e. g. pairing another set of headphones to the device or
listening music wirelessly
– Switch the headphones off “0” if wireless transmission is not allowed or
restricted, e. g. during aircraft take-off and landing

Using the NoiseGard ANC
NoiseGard ANC is only available if the headphones and smartphone are
connected using Bluetooth or the USB cable.
The PXC 550 wireless headphones provide excellent attenuation of ambient
noise using Sennheiser’s very own NoiseGard active noise cancellation (ANC)
technology.
The PXC 550 wireless headphones also feature an innovative varying noise-
attenuation system called NoiseGard Adaptive ANC. If Adaptive ANC is used,
the NoiseGard strength is dependent on the severity of the surrounding noise
and will attenuate the noise accordingly. In Adaptive ANC, NoiseGard can be
very strong if the surrounding noise is too high, or can be very gentle if the
surrounding noise is too low.
Switching the NoiseGard ANC between different modes
Indicates that the ANC is off.
Indicates that the ANC is on.
The ANC attentuates the surrounding noise to the maximum.
Indicates that the ANC is on adaptive mode.
The ANC attenuates the noise depending on the severity of the surrounding
noise.
In Adaptive ANC mode, you can adjust the strength of NoiseGard if you are
using CapTune on a smartphone that is connected wirelessly to the PXC 550
headphones.
Switching TalkThrough on/ off
TalkThrough allows you to communicate with other people without having to
remove the headphones and even when the NoiseGard ANC is switched on.
To switch TalkThrough on and off while listening to music:
Briefly tap the touch control panel twice.
You hear beeps in the headphones and the music pauses.

Using the audio cable
There are 2 connection modes when you use the audio cable:
Active mode - the audio cable is used on the headphones with sufficient
battery life.
The touch control panel and the control buttons operate normally.
Passive mode - the headphones go to passive mode when the audio cable is
used on the headphones with empty battery.
Whether the Bluetooth switch is turned on or off, Bluetooth wireless
transmission is disabled and the headphones automatically go to flight mode if
the audio cable is used. Same goes for USB transmission, once the audio cable is
inserted, the headphones go to flight mode and the transmission using the USB
cable is disabled.
Primarily, use only the audio cable when wireless transmission is not allowed,
e. g. during aircraft take-off and landing or, in some cases, during the entire
duration of the flight.
Using the audio cable’s push-to-talk button
Optionally, you can answer/end calls or play/pause music by pressing the push-
to-talk button of the provided audio cable.
Using the PXC 550 on flight mode
1. Insert the 2.5 mm jack plug into the audio input of the headphones.
The Bluetooth connection is disabled.
If you are listening to a music on the headphones via Bluetooth and
the audio cable is plugged in, the Bluetooth wireless transmission is
diabled and the music is stopped.
2. Connect the 3.5 mm jack plug to:
– the audio output of your smartphone
– the in-flight adapter if you want to use the headphones with an in-flight
entertainment (IFE) system
In active mode, the NoiseGard active noise cancellation feature is enabled; in
passive mode, the active noise cancellation feature is disabled.
CAUTION
Bluetooth may transmit radio waves when the audio cable is pulled off!
Use only the product in environments where Bluetooth® wireless
transmission is permitted. To ensure that the Bluetooth headphones
do not transmit radio waves when the audio cable is pulled off,
switch the the Bluetooth connectivity off. To switch the Bluetooth
connectivity off, see page 26.
You can also play higher resolution music mid-air/in-flight by
connecting your headphones to your smartphone or device using
the provided USB cable. To use the USB cable to listen to music on
environments where Bluetooth wireless transmission is not allowed
or restricted, ensure that the Bluetooth functionality is switched off.
To switch Bluetooth off, see page 26.

Announcement volume limiter
When in-flight mode, the volume limiter feature of the headphones protects you
from sudden volume jumps when the in-flight entertainment (IFE) system is
interrupted by the PA announcement. Typically, the PA announcement is much
louder than the volume of the IFE.
After the announcement is made, the volume of the headphones remains low
and can be increased only by adjusting the volume from the IFE.

Troubleshooting
Leaving the Bluetooth transmission range
Wireless calling and streaming are only possible in the Bluetooth transmission
range of your smartphone. The transmission range largely depends on environ-
mental conditions such as wall thickness, wall composition etc. With a free line
of sight, the transmission range of most smartphones and Bluetooth devices is
up to 10 meters.
If the headphones leave the Bluetooth transmission range of the smartphone,
the sound quality deteriorates until you repeatedly hear the voice prompt “lost
connection... phone disconnected or dongle disconnected”(review). At this
point, the connection breaks down completely, and a LED flashes red 3 times.
The connection will be re-established automatically if you re-enter the Blue-
tooth transmission range. You hear the voice prompt ”connected” if you are
back within the Bluetooth transmission range and a LED flashes white 3 times.
Restarting or resetting the PXC 550 headphones
If something isn’t working right, try restarting or resetting your headphones.
1. Switch the headphones off. See page 24.
2. Press the sound button for at least 4 seconds.
Clearing the pair settings
1. Switch the headphones on or unfold the headphones in a ready to wear po-
sition (see page 23). Press the Sound button and keep it pressed until you
hear the voice prompt “pairing” and the 5-LED array flash white in a running

The headphones are in pairing mode.
2. Press the sound button again twice.
