ULTIMATE SERIES SUBWOOFERS WELCOME Thank you for buying a DLS ULTIMATE subwoofer. The subwoofer must be installed correctly in order to work well. This manual will show you how to install it like a pro. Please read the entire manual before beginning the installation. Install the subwoofer yourself if you feel confident with our instructions and if you have the proper tools. However if you feel unsure, turn over the installation job to someone better suited to it. The speakers are designed for enclosure mounting. In "open air" installations the power handling capacity is reduced by 30% from the nominal value. We dont recommend ”open air” installations for Ultimate subwooers. CONNECTION OF SUBWOOFER How to connect depends on what type of amplifier you use. The best is to follow the instructions given in the manual for the amplifier. Most amplifiers today have built-in lowpass crossover and possibilities to connect your subwoofer in bridge mode. Two 4 ohm subwoofers are often connected in stereo mode since most amplifiers can´t handle bridge mode loads below 4 ohms. The UR10, 12 & 15 have dual, four ohm, voice coils. Each voice coil has an impedance of 4 ohms. If they are connected in series the resulting impedance is 8 ohms. If they are connected in parallel the resulting impedance is 2 ohms. Make sure to connect in a way that don´t ruin the amplifier. If you have a DLS Ultimate amplifier it´s possible to connect the voice coils in parallel, these ampliers are 1 ohm stable. SP12 and 15 have dual, two ohm, voice coils which should be considered when you connect them. We also recommend the use of a subsonic highpass filter. This gives a better bass reproduction with less "rumble". In most DLS amplifiers this feature is already built-in. For wiring use high class speaker wires, min AWG13 (2.5 mm2). For example DLS SC 2x2,5. If you have an amplifier without built-in crossover you must use a passive crossover between amplifier and subwoofer like in this example, one crossover for each voice coil. Component values are for 4 ohms. Connected with a 12 dB passive low-pass x-over = 10 mH coil in series and a bipolar capacitor of 300 microFarad in parallel. Crossover frequency is 95 Hz. 1234567 1234567 1234567 L + - C UR10, UR12, UR15 SP12, SP15 SP15S, SP18S SUBWOOFER ENCLOSURES, GENERAL Build your enclosure in a stable and airtight material. The best is MDF-board, 19 mm, or particle board, 22 mm. Larger enclosures must have bracing inside to avoid vibrations. The enclosure must be completely airtight. Use sealing compound in all joints, also around the cable terminals. The size of the enclosure is decided by the speaker data. SEALED ENCLOSURES Sealed enclosures are easy to build. The size is not critical, but it can´t be too small. The speaker data such as Fs, Qts, Vas and X-max decides the size of the enclosure. Large speakers need larger boxes. Two speakers need a box of the double size etc. The enclosure must be completely air- tight. A sealed enclosure should be filled with acoustic wool up to 75 - 100%. A sealed enclosure has a lower efficiency than vented enclosures but they can handle high power and are easy to build. A subwoofer in a sealed enclosure creates a tight bass suitable for the audiophiles listening to classical music, jazz and soft rock. All the Reference subwoofers are recommended NOT to use in sealed enclosures. VENTED ENCLOSURES A speaker in a vented enclosure has a higher efficiency (3 dB) and higher power handling capacity than in a sealed enclosure. In a vented enclosure the sound from the speaker and the port work together creating a higher sound level. The sound from the port must come out in the same phase as from the speaker otherwise the result is bad. The size of the vented enclosure is decided by the speaker data just as for the sealed one. The size of the vehicle often decides the practical size of the enclosure. A smaller enclosure has a higher resonant frequency than the larger one. The size of the enclosure should not be so big that the speaker plays below it´s own free air resonance (Fs), then it looses in power handling capacity. The port does not have to be fully inside the enclosure as long as the area and length are correct. Sometimes you need two or more ports in an enclosure. You can convert from one to two or more ports as long as the total port area is the same. All DLS subwoofers works well in vented boxes. BANDPASS ENCLOSURES In all bandpass enclosures the speakers are hidden inside the enclosure, all sound is coming out through the ports. There are different types of bandpass enclosures and they have in com- mon that they are a bit more difficult to build. Most DLS subwoofers can be used in bandpass enclosures. IMPORTANT! The speaker cones of UR10,12 & 15 are made of magnesium, a material of low weight with excellent acoustic qualitys. We recommend you NEVER to touch the cone body with you fingers. Remaining deformation of the cone body will occour if you push it with your fingers. Also think of the speaker weight when you mount it. If you don´t mount it properly it can get loose. Active filter Amplifier Connection in mono bridge mode with an active x-over. Voice coils connected in series. If you have a 1 ohm stable amplifier the voice coils should be connected in parallel for best performance (for example on a DLS monoblock). Valid from 2003-12-01

FM1 107,3 Left + Left - Right + Right - INPUTS High level Subwoofer box amplifier SBA185 LOW LEVEL CONNECTION USING RCA INPUT Use a suitable RCA signal cable to connect between car stereo head unit and sub box amplifier as seen below. Set the input selector switch to position LOW. DLS Svenska AB P.O. Box 13029, SE-40251 Göteborg, Sweden Tel: +46 31 840060, Fax: +46 31 844021 E-mail: [email protected], www.dls.se PHASE CONTROL & PHASE POLARITY SWITCH The phase control on this amplifier uses a phase polarity switch (NORMAL / INVERT), and a variable phase control adjustable from 0-90 degrees. 1. Before adjusting the phase, you must adjust the GAIN control and LP-filter to a setting where you experince a good sound. The phase control should be at 0-position when doing this, and the Phase polarity swich in position NORMAL. 2. Now use the Phase polarity switch to chose which setting that gives the best bass sound when you listen in the front seat. 3. After making this choise you can go on and adjust the variable phase control. Turn it slowly clockwise and stop at a position where you experience the bass sounds is best, and appears to come from the front of your car. If you for some reason readjust the gain control or LP-filter after doing this, you must also readjust the phase control. LOWPASS FILTER (LP_FILTER) The LP-filter allow low frequencies only and blocks higher frequencies. A typical setting is 50 – 70 Hz. Choose the setting that sounds best in your car. INPUT LEVEL CONTROL (GAIN) The input level control matches the output of your radio to the input of the amplifier. After installation is complete, make sure the GAIN control of the amplifier is turned down to min. Play a tape or CD, make sure all bass and treble settings, or equalizer, are flat. Turn the volume of the radio up until you reach a normal listening level. Increase the gain control until you hear an increase in bass level. You may have to alternate between finely tuning GAIN control and LP-filter to optimize the sound. WELCOME Thank you for buying a DLS amplifier. The amplifier must be installed and adjusted correctly in order to work well. This manual will show you how to install it. Please read the entire manual before you start. GENERAL INFORMATION This mono amplifier is designed for use in subwoofer boxes. You can install it on the side, or on the back wall of a subwoofer enclosure. The amplifier front panel is not airtight so this requires a separate airtight chamber for the amplifier in the subwoofer enclosure. INSTALLATION IN THE BOX When designing the enclosure for your subwoofers you must take in consideration that you make a separate airtight compartment for the amplifier. The depth of this compartment must be at least 50 mm (2”). CONNECTION OF THE AMPLIFIER Connect a red wire from the battery + to the amplifier terminal marked BATT+. Use cable size not less than AWG 7(10 mm2). Use max 40 A fuse in the amplifier power cable not more than 30 cm from the vehicle battery to protect the battery and amplifier in event of a short-circuit between it and the power amplifier. Connect a black wire from the amplifier terminal marked GND to the closest negative vehicle ground. Use the same cable size for this cable as for the + cable. The input signal can be either low level RCA, or high level input from the head units speaker output. The RCA connection gives the best result, so use this if possible. Connect in parallel with rear speakers or direct to the head unit speaker output SPEAKER CONNECTION The subwoofer is connected to the spade terminals P4 & P5 on the Printed Circuit Board of the amplifier. Do not sol- der the cables direct to the termin- als. 123456 123456 123456 123456 123456 123456 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 12 P5 P4 Warranty service This product is covered by warranty, depending on the conditions in the country where it is sold.
