10400536-001 Nov 2013 ©2013 Overland Storage, Inc. Page 1 of 5 *10400536-001* NEO® 8000e Tape Library Spare Z-axis Motor Assembly Instructions This document describes how to remove and replace a Z-axis motor assembly of a Belt Drive Assembly (BDA) in a NEO 8000e tape library from Overland Storage. WARNING: To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to equipment, always remove any power cords while working with the unit. CAUTION: While working with the unit, observe standard Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) precautions to prevent damage to micro-circuitry or static-sensitive devices. IMPORTANT: Overland Storage requires that the Z-axis motors be removed and replaced by an Overland Storage authorized service provider. Improper installation may result in damage which voids existing warranties. CAUTION: NEVER handle the BDA with your bare hands. Contamination from the oils on your skin can cause the BDA to stick. Always wear cotton gloves. Prepare the Library Prepare Media Drawers for Removal To simplify the replacement of the motor, remove the media drawers to provide easier access to the inside of the library. WARNING: Exercise care when removing the media drawers from the library units. Fully-loaded drawers weigh approximately 58 pounds (26.3 kg). Also, when the drawers are removed, the inner rails extend several inches beyond the back of the drawers. Tilting the drawers can result in the tapes falling out. Label all the drawers (so they can be returned to their correct positions). 2. At the front panel, select Drawer Access (and password, if active) > Unlock All to release all the media drawers. WARNING: To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to equipment, always remove any power cords while working with the unit. Prepare the Unit Power Off and Disconnect 1. On the front GUI panel, press Power to turn the library OFF. The shuttle/track assembly moves to the library floor as the unit shuts down. NOTE: If the library is non-functional, wait until the shuttle/ track assembly finishes drifting to the bottom automatically. 2. At the rear, in the bottom left corner, turn OFF the circuit breakers. 3. Remove and retain all power cords. Front Panel Assembly Removal The Front Panel Assembly (FPA) is held in place with four screws. The two at the bottom are panhead screws and the two at the top are flathead. 1. Open both front doors. 2. At the bottom on the left side of the FPA (in front of the bottom trim) remove the bottom screw. 3. Repeat Step 2 for the right-side bottom FPA screw. 4. Also on the right, remove the top FPA screw. 5. While holding the FPA to prevent stress on the inside cables, carefully remove the left-side top FPA screw 6. Carefully move the FPA out and reach inside to disconnect the J3 Connector from the top of the old controller card. 7. Open the retainer clamps above the controller card to release the J3 cable from the FPA. 8. Carefully remove the FPA and set it on a secure surface. NOTE: While the card may have SCSI connectors on its faceplate, these are non-functional and should not be used. WARNING: To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to equipment, always remove any power cords while working with the unit. Replace the Controller Card Power Down the Library 1. At the front panel touchscreen, press Power to turn the library OFF. The shuttle/track assembly moves to the library floor. 2. When the library has completed the shutdown process, at the rear, turn all the circuit breakers OFF (O). 3. Disconnect all power cords. Switch Out the Controller Card 1. Loosen the top and bottom Phillips retaining screws on the Controller card. 2. Push the top and bottom ejector handles apart. 3. Slide the old card out of the bay and place on an ESD surface. 4. Using the card cage guide, insert the new card until resistance is felt. 5. Push the ejectors together until the card is seated. 6. Tighten the top and bottom retaining screws. WARNING: To reduce the risk of electric shock or damage to equipment, always remove any power cords while working with the unit. Register First Before starting, it is essential that you activate your Overland warranty. Technical and warranty support are not available until this is done: 1. Go to the Overland Storage web site (http://www.overlandstorage.com/). 2. Click the Service & Support tab. 3. Select My Products > Register New Product. 4. At the Site Login, enter your e-mail address and password (Figure 1). NOTE: If you are not yet a member, click “New member?” and follow the instructions given. It’s free and easy! Figure 1. Support Site Login 5. Fill in the information and click Submit. IMPORTANT: Within three business days, you will receive an e-mail from Overland with your warranty certificate. Follow the instructions included to complete the process. Unpack the Library WARNING: Exercise care when unpacking and moving the NEO 8000e Library. Due to its size and weight, it is recommended that at least two people be involved with the unpacking process. NOTE: Retain all packaging materials in a protected place in case the library needs to be shipped to a different location. These tools are required to unpack and install the library: • 9/16” wrench • 10” adjustable wrench • Box knife • #2 Phillips stubby or offset screwdriver • #2 Phillips screwdriver • Level, at least 10 inches long (25cm) Remove the Outer Carton 1. Position the shipping container on a level surface with adequate clearance to work around it (Figure 2 on page 2). NOTE: The container pallet and box is labeled “RAMP SIDE” on the removal side. • Allow at least 10 ft. (3.0m) of clearance on the removal side of the container. • Allow about 3 ft. (1.0m) of clearance around the other three sides. • Allow at least 8 ft. (2.5m) of vertical clearance. *10400292-001*
