1 Description The Multichannel user interface MI is an industrial computer designed to add function- ality to the PR-43 refractometers. The MI sends and receives data and it can also be used to control the process. The Multichannel user interface MI connects with up to 4 Vaisala K-PATENTS® PR-43 refractometers. With module cards, it can also be used to add external inputs and outputs (e.g. relays and mA outputs) to your refractometer system. The MI is operated by the touch-screen display. The stainless steel enclosure gives a good environmental protection and allows also outdoor installations, especially with the included rain cover. The outer door is easy to open by one hand and the handle can be modified for padlock to prevent unauthorized access. The module cards can be reached by opening the inner door. The MI has IP66 rating when the outer door is open if the inner door (display panel) is fixed. With outer door closed the rating is IP67. Figure 1.1 Multichannel user interface MI

5.3 Recipe app Recipe app provides a convenient way to control and switch different chemical curves. Each Recipe app can provide up to 32 different recipes. Switching a recipe in Recipe app means switching the chemical curve that is used in calculations. Each process medium has its specific chemical curve and by switching it the same processing line can be used to manufacture a variety of products. 5.3.1 Requirements Using Recipe app requires a Refractometer app, which provides refractive index nD and temperature as a source data to the connected Recipe app. A licence is required to enable Recipe app. New Multichannel user interface MI:s are shipped with Recipe app licence installed. Old MI:s require software update to version 1.07 or newer and licence installation to enable Recipe app. Recipe app licences are granted free of charge to older MI:s. 5.3.2 Activating Recipe app To activate Recipe app go to Settings > Applications, tap on a free application slot and select Recipe. Select a correct source Refractometer app with Select sources. The avail- able Refractometer apps are listed based on their location in MI application slots. If no Refractometer app is listed in Select sources, then activate a Refractometer app Ref first. 5.3.3 Creating a new recipe MI is provided with a Brix chemical curve as an example recipe for Recipe apps. A new Recipe app has the example recipe activated by default. A new recipe is instantly created when the example recipe is renamed. To rename a recipe go to Recipe app > Calibration > Chemical and select Name. The new recipe is a copy of the old recipe with the new name. 5.3.4 Modifying a recipe A recipe can be modified e.g. by adjusting a field calibration parameter to offset the measurement result according to recipes requirements. To adjust the field parameters

MI instruction manual

Document/Revision No. IM-EN-MI/2.00 Effective: September 2, 2019 of an active recipe go to Recipe app > Calibration > Field. In the list, tap the parameter you want to change, type the new numbers with the number pad and approve the change by tapping DONE. Note: The parameter lists for Chemical and Field do not fully fit on the screen. Swipe down or use the scroll bar on the right to view the bottommost parameters. All recipes that are present in MI are visible and usable to all Recipe apps. If a specific recipe is modified in some Recipe app, the modification propagates also to the other Recipe app using the same recipe. 5.3.5 Selecting recipe switching mode Recipes in the Recipe app can be switched manually, via General I/O module inputs (Switch input) or via Modbus/TCP. To select the switching mode, tap the application window to access Diagnostics display. Then tap Remote control and then select the recipe switching mode. to Settings > Modules, tap the appropriate General I/O module to select it and then View module to access module configuration. Set the wanted inputs to control the Recipe app, which has a number according to the appslot it is running on. Set the purpose of inputs to implement a binary number with different multipliers for different bits. Four digital inputs associated to a single Recipe app enable 24 different binary number combinations that can address 16 different recipes. After choosing the settings for inputs, tap Done to save changes and exit the setup. 5.3.5.4 Switching recipe via Modbus/TCP In Modbus mode the recipe is switched by writing the recipe identification number to a Modbus register. Each appslot has a specific Modbus register to switch recipe for Recipe app running on that appslot. The register address is of the form 1n200, where n is the appslot number. The register data type is a four-byte signed integer. The recipe switching mode Modbus must be selected, see figure 5.23. 5.3.5.5 Switching recipe via Ethernet/IP In Ethernet/IP mode the recipe is switched by writing the recipe identification number to an Ethernet/IP object InputRecipeID, which is a four-byte integer. Ethernet/IP con- nection parameters depend on what apps are running on MI. When Refractometer app is on the first appslot, Recipe app is on the second appslot and all other appslots are empty, the connection parameters are: • Port: 0xAF12 (44818) • O->T: – instance number: 119 – data size: 4 – real time format: modeless – packet rate: 1000 ms • T->O: – instance number: 109 – data size: 120 – real time format: modeless – packet rate: 1000 ms – connection type: point to point

MI instruction manual

Document/Revision No. IM-EN-MI/2.00 Effective: September 2, 2019 Also, an Electronic Data Sheet (EDS) file is available for easy setup of the Ethernet/IP connection. The recipe switching mode Ethernet/IP must be selected, see figure 5.23. 5.3.6 Using Recipe app to make unit conversions Recipe apps can perform unit conversions so that measurement results can be dis- played in two or more units simultaneously. Unit conversions enable familiar readings like numeric values and engineering units, and comparing the measurement values to laboratory results gets easier. 5.3.6.1 Creating a recipe for unit conversion A properly configured recipe is needed for each unit conversion. Create a new recipe for each new unit to be displayed. For clarity it is recommended to name the new recipe according to the unit. To implement the unit conversion, adjust a field calibration parameter F 10 by setting its value to (M – 1) where M is the conversion multiplier. See section 5.3.3 “Creating a new recipe” and section 5.3.4 “Modifying a recipe”. 5.3.6.2 Displaying several unit conversions simultaneously To display several unit conversions simultaneously, run each unit conversion recipe in its own Recipe app. If necessary, activate new Recipe apps, see section 5.3.2 “Activating Recipe app”. Connect the new Recipe apps to the same source Refractometer app to perform unit conversions of a single measurement. To change the primary unit marking on the Recipe app display, go to Recipe app > Calibration and tap the little triangle of drop-down menu Primary unit.

6 Module cards

49 © Copyright Vaisala 2019. All rights reserved. 6 Module cards A module card adds functions to the MI, e.g. a relay module card contains two relays that can be used as wash relays or alarm relays. There are eight module card slots inside an MI. Each Multichannel User Interface MI is shipped with one relay module card with 2 independent relays and one mA output module card with two independent 4-20 mA outputs as a standard. These are already installed in the MI. In addition to the relay module card and the mA output module card, there is a general input/output module card with 8 digital inputs/outputs. These module cards have the capability to be used in any combination as well as added and removed as needed. 6.1 Installation To install a module card, turn off MI power first. Then open the enclosure, remove the display screws and fold the display to the side (see Figure 6.1). Unscrew and remove the module card cover to get access to the card slots. Insert the module card in an avail- able card slot. To make adding cards easier, start from the left. Vaisala recommends for safety reasons that relay modules are mounted in slots 2, 4, 6 and 8 (connector down- wards). This way the relay power wiring is as short as possible. Other module cards may be mounted in any slot. Important: A relay module card may have an external power source. Make sure that also this external power source connected to a relay module is OFF before installing or removing module cards.

MI instruction manual

Document/Revision No. IM-EN-MI/2.00 Effective: September 2, 2019 7 Prism wash In some applications the process flow does not keep the prism clean because flow ve- locity is not enough to keep the prism clean, or the process medium is sticky. In these applications the prism can be automatically cleaned by installing a wash system (see the refractometer manual). 7.1 Configuring prism wash The prism wash settings for different refractometers are independent of each other. The wash system is active if a relay has been configured to be a wash relay (see Sec- tion 6.3.1) and the wash time is not zero. An automatic wash function can be configured so that all refractometers connected to MI have different wash parameters. The wash parameters can be configured at Refractometer app -> Configuration -> Wash. 7.1.1 Wash cycle The wash logic is shown in Figure 7.2 as a flow diagram. The automatic prism wash cycle (Figure 7.1) consists of three phases: precondition, wash and recovery. The optional preconditioning function is used to e.g. blow out the condensate from the washing line before washing. After the preconditioning there is a one-second pause to avoid having both precondition and wash relays active at the same time. The wash cycle is initiated when the wash interval has elapsed. The wash can also be started by configuring a general input for external wash (Section 6.5.2) or manually from the user interface at Refractometer app -> Calibration menu. The order of priority for these wash triggers is 1. manual wash 2. external wash request 3. wash interval timer The wash relay is closed for the wash time specified in the wash settings. After the wash phase is completed, a recovery time is spent. During the wash cycle (pre- condition, wash, recovery) the measurement result is in hold unless otherwise speci- fied.

This menu contains the alternatives (factory settings are given in parentheses): 1. Precondition secs 0-60 s (0) 2. Recovery secs 0-120 s (20) 3. Wash secs 0-30 s (3) 4. Empty pipe check (enabled) 5. Wash check mode (disabled) 6. Wash verify delta nD limit 0.0-0.5 (0.0) 7. Wash inhibit temp enable (disabled) 8. Interval mins 0-1440 min (20) 9. Wash inhibit temp value 0-200 C (0) 10. Wash verify nD limit 1.15-1.80 (1.35) 11. Wash failure tolerance mins 0-1440 (0) 12. Measurement hold during wash (enabled) 13. Temperature hold during wash (disabled) The prism wash cycle: The timing of the wash cycle is controlled by the WASH INTERVAL, PRECONDITION TIME, WASH TIME and RECOVERY TIME settings. If the WASH INTERVAL is set to zero, the wash can only be initiated by using the manual wash (PRISM WASH on Diagnostics menu) or general input module configured for external wash. If the PRECONDITION TIME is zero (or there is no relay configured for preconditioning), the preconditioning phase is skipped. If the WASH TIME is zero (or there is no relay for wash), the wash functionality is completely disabled. The recommended wash times and wash medium pressures are given in the refrac- tometer manual. Wash check mode, standard: The prism wash check monitors automatically that the prism wash really has an effect on the prism. In the WASH CHECK mode, prism wash is accepted if the refractive index nD either falls below wash verify nD limit (default 1.35) at NORMAL OPERATION or NO SAMPLE occurs. This is the indication of a successful wash with water or steam. If the wash is not accepted, the diagnostic message PRISM WASH WARNING will appear. If no wash is accepted during wash tolerance time, the message

Both messages and the wash tolerance counter are re- set by a successful wash. The Wash check mode, automatic wash cut differs from the standard mode by stopping the wash 2 seconds after the nD falls below the limit. To stop the measurement for the duration of the prism wash, choose MEASUREMENT HOLD DURING WASH and in that menu activate the hold function. The CONC reading and mA output are held in the value they had immediately before starting the wash cycle. You can also stop temperature measurement for the duration of the wash by setting TEMPERATURE HOLD DURING WASH. To set a low temperature limit, choose WASH INHIBIT TEMPERATURE ENABLE, enable it (fac- tory setting is disabled) and then set the temperature with WASH INHIBIT TEMP VALUE. The temperature is in the units that is chosen from the Calibration menu as the secondary unit. The empty pipe check prevents washing if message is NO SAMPLE, i.e. there’s no process liquid in the pipe. To deactivate (or activate) the empty pipe check, choose EMPTY PIPE CHECK and then the appropriate menu command. To change the wash nD limit, select WASH VERIFY ND LIMIT to set the nD to be used by the wash check functionality. If you have set a wash verify delta nD limit, a temporary wash verify limit is calculated in the beginning of wash: nD limit = nD current – ΔnD. This temporary limit is compared to actual wash verify nD limit parameter, and the higher of these values takes precedence. To set wash tolerance time, select WASH FAILURE TOLERANCE to set the time during which a wash has to be accepted. If no wash is accepted during wash tolerance time, the mes- sage becomes PRISM WASH FAILURE. The wash tolerance counter is reset by a successful wash.
