manual for important safety information Indicates hazardous voltages may be present Equipment is protected by double or reinforced insulation Indicates the terminal(s) so marked must not be connected to a circuit where the voltage with respect to earth ground exceeds the maximum safety rating of the meter Indicates the terminal(s) so marked may be subjected to hazardous voltages. MAX 600 V International Safety Symbols Brief Description Typical Applications Category Rating Single phase receptacles and connected loads Three phase circuits and single phase lighting circuits in commercial buildings - Household appliances, power tools - Outlets more than 30ft (10m) from a CAT III source - Outlets more than 60ft (20m) from a CAT IV source - Equipment in fixed installations such as 3-phase motors, switchgear and distribution panels - Lighting circuits in commercial buildings - Feeder lines in industrial plants - Any device or branch circuit that is close to a CAT III source CAT II CAT III The measurement category (CAT) rating and voltage rating is determined by a combination of the meter, test probes and any accessories connected to the meter and test probes. The combination rating is the LOWEST of any individual component. CAT IV Connection point to utility power and outdoor conductors - Primary distribution panels - Overhead or underground lines to detached buildings - Incoming service entrance from utility - Outdoor pumps WARNING: Operation is limited to CAT II applications when the insulated tips are removed from one or both test probes. Refer to Input Limits section of this manual for maximum voltage ratings. KEEP THE METER DRY. If it gets wet, wipe it off. 2. USE AND STORE THE METER IN NORMAL TEMPERATURES. Temperature extremes can shorten the life of the electronic parts and distort or melt plastic parts. 3. HANDLE THE METER GENTLY AND CAREFULLY. Dropping it can damage the electronic parts or the case. 4. KEEP THE METER CLEAN. Wipe the case occasionally with a damp cloth. DO NOT use chemicals, cleaning solvents, or detergents. 5. USE ONLY FRESH BATTERIES OF THE RECOMMENDED SIZE AND TYPE. Remove old or weak batteries so they do not leak and damage the unit. 6. IF THE METER IS TO BE STORED FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME, the batteries should be removed to prevent damage to the unit. Meter Description 1. Non-contact AC voltage detector probe tip 2. Touch the test probe tips across the circuit or part under test. It is best to disconnect one side of the part under test so the rest of the circuit will not interfere with the resistance reading. 4. Read the resistance in on the LCD display. MODE Ω Red Black Black Red Probe Probe Probe Probe Forward test Reverse test 1. Set the rotary function switch to the Ω •))) CAP position. 2. Press the button until the “ ” symbol appears on the display. 3. Touch the test probes to the diode under test. 4. Forward voltage will indicate 0.4V to 0.7V on the LCD display. Reverse voltage will indicate “OL”. Shorted diodes will indicate near 0V and an open diode will indicate “OL” in both polarities. MODE Diode Test Never test diodes in a live circuit. WARNING: Hz% MODE ® 8 Operation cont. Continuity Test Never test continuity on a live circuit. WARNING: 1. Set the rotary function switch to the Ω •))) CAP position. 2. Press the button until the “•)))” symbol appears on the display. 3. Touch the test lead probes to the device or wire being tested. 4. A tone will sound if the resistance is approximately 30 ohms or less. MODE Capacitance Measurements Safely discharge capacitors before taking capacitance measurements. WARNING: 1. Set the rotary function switch to the Ω •))) CAP position. 2. Press the button until the “nF” symbol appears on the display. 3. Connect the test leads to the capacitor to be measured. 4. Read the capacitance on the LCD display. It may take up to a minute to obtain a stable reading on large capacitors. MODE Hz% MODE ® Hz% MODE ® Wire

Frequency and % Duty Cycle Measurements

Observe all safety precautions when working on live voltages. WARNING: 1. Set the rotary function switch to the V HZ % position. 2. Select AC voltage using the button. 3. Press the button once to display Hz (frequency). Pressing the button again will toggle the display to % (duty cycle). 4. Touch the test probe tips to the circuit under test. 5. Read the value on the LCD display. Non-contact AC Voltage Detection (Detection range 100 to 600V) Risk of Electrocution. Before use, always test the Voltage Detector on a known live circuit to verify proper operation. WARNING: 1. Hold the detector probe tip close to an AC voltage. 2. If AC voltage within the specified range is present, the indicator light will illuminate. NOTE: Insulation type and thickness, and distance from the voltage source and other factors may effect operation. Use other methods to verify live voltage if there is any uncertainty. NOTE: The detector is designed with high sensitivity. Static electricity or other sources of energy may randomly trip the sensor. This is normal operation. Hz% MODE ® Hz MODE Hz% 10 REPLACING THE BATTERY To avoid electric shock, disconnect test leads from any source of voltage before removing the battery cover. WARNING: To avoid electric shock, do not operate the meter until the battery cover is in place and fastened securely. WARNING: 1. Remove the one Phillips screw on the bottom of the meter. 2. Remove the battery cover. 3. Replace old batteries with two “AAA” 1.5V batteries. 4. Observe correct polarity. (See label on back of meter.) 5. Close the battery cover and secure the screw. Operation cont. Flashlight 1. Press and hold the button with the symbol to turn on flashlight. 2. Release the button to turn off flashlight.
